The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, live Norway June 16th 1974
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were a Scottish rock band formed in Glasgow in 1972. Fronted by Alex Harvey accompanied by Zal Cleminson on guitar, bassist Chris Glen, keyboard player Hugh McKenna and drummer Ted McKenna, their music was a blend of glam rock, blues rock and hard rock, with cabaret elements. Their stage performances incorporated theatrical elements. The band were popular in continental Europe, and influential in Australia, most notably on AC/DC (particularly their singer Bon Scott) and on the young Nick Cave and his first band The Boys Next Door.

True story- me and my mate Stevie were busking on Sauchiehall St (Glasgow) c.2000. A guy in his late 50's stops and watches us until we finished the song. He goes, 'Have you heard of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band?' I say 'I think I've heard of them but a bit before my time' he goes 'Well I was the drummer in the SAHB and you guys need rhythm' and he chucks a pound in the guitar case and walks off. (Edit- just found out that he was Ted McKenna and he passed away in 2019. RIP big man).

@@ScottishTeeVee The worst are the performances where the record is being played, and the singer is singing along, but the original vocal is still there too. That never made any sense. If they can't get a track without the vocal, turn off the mic, at least to where the viewer doesn't hear that. Maybe let the artist hear himself if it helps keep in synch with the record. But two vocal tracks that don't quite line up is terrible.

Reminds me of the punch of Dr. Feelgood and theatrics of many at the time. For some reason it made me think how 'fake' Ray Davies always looked to me. Like he was acting. Alex Harvey is really selling this.

This is truly superb, I love seeing Alex with his telecaster leering down at the audience. . The way he enunciates the last syllable of ‘Frame -d’ is a great touch. I see him as I imagine those Victorian music hall impresarios or whatever. Disregarding my nonsense, - he is irrefutably charismatic and entertaining, ❤

How did I miss these guys back in the day? I was always looking for new and obscure talent. Maybe I was too enamored with zeppelin, king crimson, montrose etc. Lots of killer talent in those days. Anyway these guys a great. I keep watching. Thanks for posting.

I first saw them on either 'Don Kirshner's Rock Concert' or 'In Concert' on U.S. tv sometime in 1973. I was instantly hooked. Over the next few years I saw them live at the Whisky, three nights in a row at the Roxy and then at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The first night at the Roxy, Alex spray painted 'Vambo Rool' on the red curtains behind the stage. I remember going there for a show many months later and it was still there. Cleminson was the show for me. Killer guitar chops along with the makeup and his schtick was unforgettable.

When Framed ! was released in 1973 Midnight Moses exploded my world as a 12 y.o. living in NE Ohio. Cleveland radio station WMMS was playing album-sides and were 'getting into TSAHB ! It was BY FAR the coolest song on the radio, even with the 'heavy hitters' like Sabbath, Zep, The Stones etc. It was their surrealistic take on R & R along with Zal's searing lead guitar! I caught-on along with most every heavy headed rock fan in the area. Alex Harvey went on to super stardom but always mentioned the early burgeoning fan base in Cleveland Ohio !

They were warming up Jethro Tull in Jackson, Mississippi in 1975. The three of us weren't from that area, and we got lost driving to the concert. They houselights had just gone up, and they were cleaning up the fallen bricks of a faux brick wall that I guess Alex jumped through. Watching this, I really regret missing them.

What's not to love about this band? I've always considered Alex as much an actor as a singer, and the theatrical element (a key factor in everything they did), combined with their instrumental prowess, comes into full effect here, interestingly contrasted with their down-to-earth professionalism, an example of which is shown in the first 10 seconds of the video, with Zal calmly concentrating on his tuning, before slipping into his 'evil mime' role. A killer outfit if ever there was one, we were lucky to have them around. Greetings from the Netherlands.
