Greetings Debbie. Thank you for your comments. I submitted this historic Graceland performance to Harri for much of the same reasons you have stated. Paul Simon and many other musicians have and will continue (I hope) to use their fame and influence to unite people and even countries...through the universal appeal of music. If you are interested in how this project came together by, I have provided a link below. Hopefully, anyone else interested will see your comment and this link. You can search KZbin for the complete concert too. If I may, I also want to compliment you, as I have others in this community, on your submissions. I really enjoy coming upon new music, artists and bands in most genres. Thanks again. Paul Simon’s Graceland album was sooo huge when it came out. At the time it came out I had a job where I got to fly globally to different multinational businesses. I had tickets to see this tour in Vancouver, but I got snowed out where I was and couldn’t make the flight into Vancouver. Then later that year I got to work in South Africa for a job. But, again, the job was over about a month before this concert took place in South Africa. I did finally get to see Paul Simon on his last tour. It was a great concert, but I still wished I would have seen this tour.

So THRILLED to see this song!! I’ve always loved it, along with the whole album! Amazingly, Paul Simon got some criticism from some saying he “stole “ African music as his own and exploited it!! He responded by saying he loved and was inspired by it and thus wrote this song and that all singers and musicians were paid correctly for their work. People will criticize anything!🙄. I think they work great together to make this beautiful music 🎶

He featured African musicians in his concerts - i would say that he made Ladysmith Black Mombazo world famous. The one thing I didn't like was his music video of "You can call me all" where Chevy Chase was just mugging for the camera. That was dumb, annoying and certainly a missed opportunity to feature African artists

Yes, Hugh Masekela actually said that the criticism of Paul Simon, at the time, was a disgrace.
@revsharkie
@revsharkie 2 жыл бұрын
Part of the issue, if I remember correctly, was that the African National Congress had a "cultural boycott" in place, and Simon violated it by working with Ladysmith and some other South African musicians. But for people like me, living in a small town in Kansas at the time, Graceland gave me my first exposure to South African music, and as a result I learned a bit about apartheid and the struggle against it. I was absolutely blown away when Paul Simon and Ladysmith were on SNL. I'd never heard anything like it.

Peace, love and bellbottoms.

Many years back, I saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo in concert in a relatively small but perfectly acoustic venue. (Just them, no Paul Simon.) I've seen a lot of concerts over the years (over 4 dozen, I'm sure), but they were one of the most amazing acts. Their harmonies were otherworldly -- and even though many of their songs were in the Zulu language, the music was so powerful and spoke volumes on its own. Their founder and former leader, Joseph Shabalala, passed away a few years ago, but as far as I know, the group is still performing.

And he took some personal hits for it from both black and white...some African and African American musicians especially claimed he was a stealing their music, which was not the intent....he helped elevate the prominence of other cultures music to world status, and by doing so promoted world peace. Then there was the white critics, lord help me, and Paul stood tall for it. Both parties harassed Paul Simon over this album, where are these losers now? His attitude of "come on, let's make music together"....what the hell is wrong with that? Many other famous musicians/ writers were too dammed chickenshit, lived in their narcissist safety zone, they're money making genre, or, hatred zone. The world can do without their bloody noise they think is music.

Ladysmith also did a great version of "Knocking on heaven's door" with Dolly Parton and their rendition of "Amazing Grace" is beautiful. On the subject of South African music you should look for performances by Johnny Clegg and Savuka... "Cool. Crazy beautiful world" and "Scatterlings of Africa" come to mind..

The most important album of my lifetime. Personally, my uncle gave he a tape of this when I was 15, about 1 summer before I took my first overseas trip alone for a homestay. By itself, this music opened my eyes to the notion that things were not all the same everywhere in the world (obviously this is true, but for most 15 year olds in 1986 I suspect it was less true than it is today). I hope I have lived up to the promise of the album with my approach to life, travel, experience, etc.

This is an historic & emotionally charged concert that took place in tue late 80s in Zimbabwe, the closest the Graceland experience could come to South Africa at the time. The cultural boycott against apartheid was in place, in addition to a state of emergency that would’ve made it impossible to host the concert in SA. Only in 1991 did Graceland first play out in SA. Many SAs crossed the border into Zim to experience one of the most iconic moments in South African music.

Music is the great equalizer. There are only two types of music, good and bad. Paul Simon makes good music.

Hello. I am a little late to the party here, but better late than never. The thing about the people reacting to this song is that they are awed by the music, which is, indeed, glorious musical composition and performance. People seem to gloss over the lyrics of this song, which are quite profound in trying to explain what apartheid was all about. The lyrics are all about the difference between those who MINE the diamonds and those who WEAR the diamonds in society. The lyrics such as "'..... He's a poor boy Empty as a pocket with nothing to lose. sha na na Diamonds on the soles of their shoes" This refers to to both of them walking in the dirt of the diamond mines, and diamond dust ground into the soles of their shoes as they work to mine the diamonds, unable to sell the diamonds on the soles of their shoes as there were sanctions against the miners selling the diamonds on their own, Here were people who mined and provided the diamonds for the people inside the establishment who were barred from entering the establishment. And, "everybody knows what I am talking about". The lyrics are also about ignorance. There is a youtube video of a man who went to New York City diamond district. He takes a trowel and digs up all the dirt in the cracks of the sidewalks in front of the stores along the street of the diamond district. He takes a portable vacuum and he vacuums up all the dirt from the cracks of the sidewalk. He puts all the dirt from the cracks of the sidewalk of the diamond district of New York City and he ships it to himself in Colorado. He then takes a gold pan and some water and starts panning the dirt from the cracks of the sidewalk of the diamond district in New York City, and pans out about $900 in gold dust and a couple thousand dollars worth of cut diamonds that had been dropped out of pockets of the people who worked in the stores of the diamond district of New York City, the people who worked the jewelry, who filed metal gold burs from poured gold jewelry making and diamond setting. The people who make the jewelry are not the people who pay the money to wear the jewelry. The people who make the gold and diamond jewelry are not in the same social circles as the people who pay the money to wear the jewelry. They too, have "diamonds on the soles of their shoes. And that is the meaning of the lyrics of this song.

New subscriber here. I stumbled upon your video and so glad I did. I was ten years old when the Graceland album came out. My mom owned a copy and I would play it over and over again. I was so entranced and thrilled at the sound. To this day it remains one of my favorites and it has so many memories of my mom attached to it now (she passed a few years ago) therefore it remains in my heart. Thank you for your reaction!
