As someone who was trained in TKD, we where told that the meaning of Tae Kwon Do is basically "The Way" like the journey is the goal and not a certain part of the road like becoming a black belt, which perfectly reflects what it is all about in Martial Arts, its not about which Martial Arts is the best or strongest etc, its about finding yourself on this journey, getting better and becoming confident in yourself and your craft (confident not arrogant). it was funny in my area (population of the three connected towns was about 62-64k) we had 3 or 4 dojos. most of them claimed to be karate but were actually taekwondo which I tried one and realized early that the teacher (a police officer, and personally wouldn't call them a sensei) knew very little. the dojo I ended up joining was a mixed martial art taught by a 3rd generation of the arts creator called Nin-Ti-Kung-do, the mix was obvious by the name. but the point is, the other dojos' students feared this dojo. we were taught on a completely different scale, and in open belt competitions we always fought well above their belts, our yellows would compete with their orange through blue belts. Im not saying STYLE is better or worse. but there is a LOT to be said about the quality of sensei. also there is a lot to be said there are a lot of "black belts" that havent practiced in decades that maybe out of shape but are still very formidable. after years of injuries I cant do the 10' jumping kicks anymore, but my reaction time, speed, and board breaking skills are still there.

That's the issue with TKD. No one takes it seriously anymore because of how easy it is to get belts. When I was in middle school we had a Judo teacher and eventually we got a TKD teacher, the only reason I didn't make black belt is cause it only lasted for like 2 years each and our teachers never gave us belts. It's pretty shit how kids are indoctrinated into this program and little kids get black belts without any effort and when they reach adulthood they only reach their potential as a black belt if they decide to keep going until after school, but if they don't then that black belt basically means nothing because they didn't have the skill to show for it most of the time, cause they're kids.

When you are trying to return from where you were as an addict, and return to the standard, sober view of reality, it's hard. You think rock bottom is when you're fucked up and messing up your life, when you did something dumb because of the chemicals. The truth is, rock bottom happens during the recovery phase, that's when you have to face all of the pain, the regrets, actually look at yourself and all that you've done. It is a very painful introspective phase, and some things you have to do, as a way of reparation, or separating yourself now, from who you were. You may not even realize why you're doing what you're doing, it just feels like you need to do this thing, apologize, try to help solve a situation similar to one you caused, it's a strong compulsion, part of your subconscious is trying to redeem itself, or prove that a change is happening by going against what you would have done in the past. Honestly, I don't know Keith, I can't judge his actions. I sincerely doubt this change of heart was a sort of epiphany for him, but if it was mad respect. Either way, Seth's advice was great. And to anyone struggling with addiction, keep fighting. It's like climbing an icy mountain, you're gonna struggle, but hold on as long as you can before you let go and slip again. And when you slip, get your grip again as fast as you can. One slip up doesn't mean a restart to everything, it just means you need to refocus, get your grip and keep climbing. Even a papercut doesn't fully heal overnight. And to anyone with a loved one struggling with addiction, I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Don't expect anyone to quit cold turkey, relapses will happen, it's not an overnight thing, it's a very long process and it may take years. If you can't handle them mentally or whatever, it is completely okay to walk away and leave them to their own devices, DO NOT let guilt over what they did to themselves cast a shadow on your life. Addiction is a very personal demon which they have to face on their own. Sure, counseling and other resources can make it easier, being there for them can help a lot as well, but in the end the battle of addiction can only be fought and won by the one who is afflicted.

Very interesting. I didn't catch that. You're right. Verbally he was apologizing to everyone but physically only to one of the girls. It was bad enough they laughed at him out of confusion at first. But then she outright rejected him by calling him a nerd. He managed to get a hug out of it. 😬 If he cared so much about respect he'd know that in karate or any martial art you leave your problems at the door. And that emotionally dumping on people is a sign of poor character. Opposite effect of what he was trying to achieve.

Glad my Masters never glorified our belts. I remember having a one on one conversation about the belts cause I had questions about the degrees and what they entailed and he simply said that its a personal journey. The black belt kinda just means you should know everything about the style, but it's application is to be custom tailored to you in order to truly master it. Which made sense. I had 6 different masters that had gotten visas from South Korea to teach in the US in my dojo. Each taught a different aspect of fighting cause they were simply more proficient in them and everytime anyone asked them a question about techniques they would teach what they know very well buy they were never afraid to point us in the direction of the other masters that knew how to do it better than them. Very humbling and respectful. I really missed them. They had to go back to Korea after about 7 months.

I'm with the BJJ guy on the saber tossing/show sword skills. If that blade was live, Girl would have shredded her uniform. In Kendo/Iaido, so much focus is on accuracy of cuts (Ki-Ken-Tai-Ichi). Katas are "simple", but to attain perfection in them is so difficult.

Not really in fact a lot of those martial arts tend to fail in real fights. I self taught myself more weapon based but I studied took what worked for me to defend myself from getting attacked by multiple individuals. Pressure testing moves tends to work. I hung out with many martial artists trained that ended up practicing two or more styles of martial arts they tend to mix them up while fighting for real. My teacher was the school of hard knocks Never won a fight but that was because it was me against group of people thus I started studying weapon usage and even kicking a person when they are down.

So when I started martial arts in 1979 my instructor taught Shotokan and Tae Kwon Do and I learned both at the same time. I had to learn all the Shotokan forms as well as the TKD forms. It's not really a stretch as TKD actually comes from Shotokan and back in the 80's they were still very similar. It took me 10 years to get my black belt, mainly because you had to be 18 to be a black belt in my school and I started at 7. Old school rules... Since then, I've received black belts in American open Karate and Hapkido. I'm turning 50 this year and am now a proud white belt in BJJ. I'm not a full-blown cult member yet, but I'm working on it.

Belt system can be strange. The way it was explained to me, was that it was to help the student as well as the teacher. If a teacher saw a student doing something incorrect and he was wearing a white belt, the teacher would know that he just started and would explain it very simply. If a teacher saw a student doing something incorrectly, but was wearing a brown belt, they could skip the basic level conversation and have more nuanced discussion because the teacher would know by the belt that he was not novice. Sort of like college, you can have a more sophisticated discussion with a senior than you could have with a freshman.

16:57 - 17:10 This is probably the most satisfying and right quote I'll ever heard. Most people think black belts are unbeatable or pro fighters, I remember my old days when I was green belt on Taekwondo, my kicks were getting stronger and faster, and my stamina was improving too. When I was blue belt I used to fight a lot against the black belt partners I met on my academy (that was like 4-5 years ago), I would win the matches both for points or overall better fighting performance since I would always go full contact when I was kicking the paddles. After 7 years of Taekwondo, 1 year of no training time and then my epic comeback (I was training myself these past 3 years), I felt like even better than before, it's just that I really miss the Kyorugi part (Taekwondo's fighting part). Before I joined the place where my master Bryan Cerda used to teach Taekwondo in Perú (I live over here, btw greetings to you Sensei Seth, I love your channel :D), but I just found out that he wasn't here anymore, instead I got to meet his teacher. He teaches very well and all, but on these 2 past months I never saw ANYONE fighting, fighting is very important for every martial art and contact sport. I'm saying all of this because probably the best way to uncover which one of these guys is a true black belt is to make them fight against somebody that has similar experience, at least. Although I'm really more crazy and energetic in Kyorugi than Poomsae, I still learned this last one a lot but I forgot every Poomsae belt so everybody would say that I'm not a black belt if they would ask me to show them my skills. Right now I still have my black tip red ribbon because my dad didn't have enough cash to pay for my black belt exam. Although this may be a good thing if I keep training hard so when I finally earn my black belt on Taekwondo, some Taekwondo students that are 2nd, 3rd or even 4th Dan would understimate my fighting skills. I also always believed that belts are just a piece of cloth. I mean, I'm tired of the easy earned black belts out there on a lot of Taekwondo academies (not only my country). Until now I fought 4 black belts that are legit, 1 of them fought equally against me and the other crushed my stomach since his height is like 6' 2" and weighting around 199 pounds. After I trained Muay Thai and Boxing for 2 months on my university sports program (the quarantine entered around March, 2018, sadly) I learned the basics and then I kept on training after 1 year of basic exercises (but no martial arts training). Sorry but I just wanted to share my martial arts journey until now hehe. Set, I would like to see you fighting against Taekwondo fighters and strong boxers too! I learned a lot from both Taekwondo and Boxing, Muay Thai too! I wish I can meet somebody strong enough to fight me toe to toe since fighting is what allow us the fighters to be stronger and more experienced. Thanks for this video!

I am not a martial artist but know a few, some ranked to a level of dan where above it becomes more about politics than skill. My understanding of black belt is this... You now have a solid understanding of the principles/techniques etc so you are ready to start fully learning the subtle details and honing your skills so you can master it. A bit like a uni degree does not make you a master in something, it simply prepares you for acedemia and you are now ready to explore your subject, document it correctly and communicate at a level your peers would expect.

One other style specific thing about Keith that caught my eye... In World Taekwondo, the main style I'm aware of that wears the V-necked doboks, the black belts have black trim around their neck, but his was white trimmed like a color belt. I actually have the same dobok as Adriana, though I have more colors in my hair, and it's a super specific women's cut one from Mooto. Anyways, lots of cool little things to see here, and yeah, trying to figure out who is a Black Belt from another style is pretty mixed, and even within my own style I've seen a lot of lameness at the 1st Dan rank. 2nd and 3rd tend to be where things have been weeded out well. A 1st Dan black belt is just a symbol of advanced beginner anyways, though, and we can all say thanks to Judo for the belt color mattering.
