They aren't "necessarily" the same thing- avoid could mean not getting into the situation in the first place, dodge could be dodging the actual attacks, and escape is getting away from the situation if you've found yourself in it. The REAL problem is the order he presented them in- it should really be Avoid, Face, Negotiate, Dodge and Escape: 1) Try and Avoid the situation if you can 2) If you are in the situation, Face the attacker and keep your eye on them 3) Try and Negotiate your way out of the situation 4) Learn how to Dodge any attacks that are coming 5) If you've been attacked and successfully managed to Dodge, immediately try and Escape The way THIS guy did it though, you avoided the fight, then you dodged the attacked, then you escaped the fight, then you negotiated your way out of the attack you avoided or escaped, then you decided to face your attacker after avoiding / escaping the situation. @Leif3GHP2 жыл бұрын
@@Chraan that's because the general public has a gross misconception of self defense. Seth and his vein of KZbinrs have often railed against teaching people special techniques that are supposed to somehow help them in a crisis, because the won't. It's all nonsense. Avoidance and learning how to retreat is the #1 priority of self defense. People have no concept of what real violence is like. It happens fast, VIOLENTLY, and without warning. You have been stabbed 5 times before you realize someone has touched you. It's another 20 seconds before you realize they were stabbing you and not just punching you. Once the fight has commenced, the number 1 skill is to be able to summon up an equal or greater level of aggression than your opponent has. After all that has been thoroughly explored, then it's time for techniques and not a moment before.
@SurmaSampo2 жыл бұрын
@@Chraan When you look at profession body guard training and other training that is primarily developed through experience on not getting killed when there is an elevated risk, it always revolves around awareness, avoidance and escape. People go to self defense courses to learn how to be safe not how to fight and the awareness, avoidance and escape is much better at that. "Self-defense" course that teach fight tricks without teaching fighting just provide false confidence which is worse than nothing.
@jonathanbartlett10982 жыл бұрын
I worked in Security too and I 100% agree with you. Real self defense is not about fighting, it's about not getting hurt or killed. In my experience, the biggest danger to a person is their ego, and it comes in the form of "I am too strong/skilled/smart to lose a fight" or "This person confronted/disrepected/insulted me and now I need to teach them a lesson". Avoiding unnecessary confrontation, avoiding dangerous situations, utilizing de-escalation techniques, and maintaining awareness of your surroundings are fundamentally important to self defense. I wish they had a real self defense expert here, their instruction would have been radically different. Of course, probably a lot less entertaining and a lot more unnerving for the average person. People like to learn punching and kicking, but are less interested in learning how the body reacts to severe injury to the internal organs from a puncture wound, or what happens to a person's brain after suffering severe head trauma

The belt system started with judo, then karate, then taekwondo and other styles after that. Most western styles not influenced by East Asian martial arts wouldn't have a belt system. I never thought krav maga would have one. While it's risky, gun defense is generally a "might as well" system. If their gun is already out, you're not likely to survive if the intent to kill is there anyway, so it makes sense to "might as well" learn some.
@jonathancampbell52312 жыл бұрын
Krav Maga actually does take techniques from Judo, Karate and Aikido (as well as Boxing and Wrestling), and it does indeed have a belt system derived from them. There are six belts in Krav Maga- Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue and Black, with Black Belt being invitation only- followed by up to 8 degrees of Black Belt (only one person in the world has an 8th degree black belt though)

I would say the palm strikes for a "self-defense" move is pretty smart. Non-fighters struggle with making a proper fist and getting the knuckles aligned with the forearm. Palm strikes remove that element so even someone who has no idea what their doing could throw a decent strike. Take one class and you can throw a palm strike without hurting your wrist. You pop someone in the nose with that, and assuming their skull doesn't shatter and explode into their brain killing them (as we know happens all the time), the assailants eyes tear up, they're worrying about their potentially broken nose and the victim can take that opportunity to skeedaddle. (That means run away for us old timers) Maybe throw the front snap to the....sorry A-Frame kick.....to the groin before you go. Not quite a stomp, but if they're standing you do what you have to do.
@2teepeepictures3822 жыл бұрын
If I only had 10 minutes to teach someone self-defense this is what I would do The first minute would be stressing the importance of awareness. The next two minutes would be making sure everybody there knows how to be assertive. Practice speaking loudly. Once everyone knows how to yell and say get back or you’re too close I would move onto the next thing. How to make a fist would be a minute Then I would take the rest of the time to teach very simple techniques. End it all with The statistic that the number one thing that criminals look for when choosing a victim is if the victim is willing to ignore them. Awareness and look people in the eyes.

@Real Aiglon so belts!, depends on the schools heritage. there are obviously grades in Krav, but whether or not theres a belt (from my understanding) stems from whether your school falls under Levines school or Eyal Yanilovs (with both having been certified by Imi Lichtenfeld). Krav Maga Global for example holds grades P1-5, G1-5, E1-5 which come in the form of a patch. so really it comes down to whether youre KMG (Krav Maga Global). IKMF (international Krav Maga federation) or Krav Maga Worldwide.

Proper self defense is pretty close to the fraud's list, just in a different order. Don't get into bad situations, get out of them if you do, hand over your dough if you can't. Only if you're forced into a violent confrontation with no means of getting out, martial arts are useful for anything except your confidence/assertiveness. If I was forced to have one of the three lead a class on self defense, I'd definitely go with the fraud, after sitting him down and discussing his list so he's forced to think about it. The other two were way too much into teaching martial arts and would probably be harder to get to teach the stuff that might actually save the life of the trainee. Martial arts against a gun in your face? Yeah, no.

In a self-defense situation I have and would continue to teach palm strikes over closed fists because most people have no idea how to punch correctly and without training, no wraps, no gloves, we're looking at broken knuckles. The next step after palm strikes is eye-gouges, same thing just extend those fingers towards the eye (look at me avoiding the Bisping and Jones jokes). Then after that I'd teach punching. For me I want someone to be able to have something that can be effective at dissuading an attacker and minimizing harm to self after the very first lesson. If I was teaching a martial art or a combative sport I'd be working on correct form from day one because the desired end result is different as is the investment of the participant.

Ok I gotta give context about the first guy, he's Brazilian, and I'm also a Brazilian. How do I know besides his accent? The cultural context cues he presented. Everything he taught is actually a principle of self defense. 1st - the "avoid, escape" he said is 100% aligned with the Brazilian context, we're taught that by EVERY serious martial arts class since day one, it doesn't matter if it's muay thai, krav maga or whatever. "Remember, just because you know how to punch your opponent and fight better than him, that your opponent will play fair, you WILL get stabbed or shot." 2nd - when he was teaching how to avoid the "swimmer's punch", it was another clue of him being Brazilian, our "street fighters tough guys" equivalent of the America's "worldstar tough guys" are called swimmers because of the way they swing their arms when fighting. 3rd - again, "avoid, dodge, escape, negotiaton and face to your opponent" was a mistranslation on his part, because his english is awful, should be: - Evitar - Avoid (Be aware and avoid confrontation) - Prevenir - Prevent (Dodge) (if confrontation happens and you're aware, now's the time for you to move the opposite way) - Fugir - Escape (if confrontation happens and you find yourself in it, find the quickest way to escape) - Negociar - Negotiate (If you can't escape, try to defuse the confrontation and negotiate) - Violência de Ação - Violence of Action (Face your agressor) (If you are 100% certain that the situation is not defusable and you will definitely get shot/stabbed, then act with as much violence and as quick as possible without hesitation in order to try to survive) These steps should be followed in this exact order. Source: I practice martial arts since the age of 3, my mom is a black belt in Hapkido. She was also a military firefighter and she taught me the principles of not getting myself killed in Brazil. And lastly, every single master and teacher I had, were explicit and would hammer these steps into every student's brains.

Random dude told me the best self defense was being aware of your surrounding (know where ppl are if u need help, if stores are open near where u are ect..), be loud, keep distance... Be loud "Hey dude, I dont know you... what do you want? what are you doing? please stop" = draw attention to you. Keep distance and get closer to other people near you. Even if you have people close by and you manage to get their attention on what's going on they might not want to get involved, but if you bring the situation to where they are they will more likely try and help get rid of the person for you. Also often the "attacker" will leave by own accord simply bcs they don't want to have to deal with a group of people. If someone want's to hurt you, they will regardless. If you can not get away immediately and are force to fight a nice kick to the groin works just fine. Improve on that kick, meaning stance, speed and power. Make sure to disengage right after the kick so they don't get hold of you and move away, get help. Even a groin kick can be risky thought. Maaan, a can of bear spray works wonders. If you are going to get thru all of this training to be safe, you might as well get fit, build a good frame, be loud. I crossed paths with these self defense people that has no power what so ever, and to me seem hesitant in everything they do... Make a decision and act on it! But, make the right decision! And no, I'm no self defense guru, or anything of the sort... I am sure many here can keep making scenarios where above doesn't work, but that's life...

We have belts in KM here in Israel. In the video that we see here from the US, we rarely see good quality KM schools, btw... Come here to train.

Certain KM organizations do in fact use a belt system, rather than the patch system.

As someone who has done a couple years of martial arts, i always say im confident i could beat anyone who hasnt learnt how to fight, but i would confidently lose against anyone who is actively looking for a fight. So how to defend yourself? get yourself enough space to kick (that palm/punch blitz looks great to get space) and as soon as that roundhouse-foot touches the ground (because it obviously missed), do a 180 and start running. Not fighting is the best way to not lose a fight

2:52 haven't watched all of it but I am guessing the guy is not a self defense guy but does something athletic like ballet or some other kind of dancing, the way he moved just seemed very dance like

We do have self defense in TKD but it looks a lot different than what that guy did.

And even though Sensei Seth joke about TKD I see that TKD people are fast with their movement and Thundering kicks. I mean for self defense you can attack the lower body using kicks right?
@tycarne78502 жыл бұрын
@@1tan_freed0m And most people, perhaps especially those who haven't been trained to defend them, will just walk through those lower body kicks and break your face; resistance to pain when you're having an adrenaline spike is enormous - it's why most pain compliance techniques don't actually work unless they also immobilize an opponent.

I'm pretty sure that "commando battle tactics" involve more firearms than they do wristlocks.
