The first MMA competitions I saw here in Germany back then when the sport started to move away from illegal tournaments to something more professional, the fighters were allowed to knee someone to the head. The result was pretty lame though. A lot of cuts and a lot of bleeding. Which led the fights to end pretty early.

The Soccer kick on the floor rule also helps avoid the opportunity of kicking someone in the head when they might already knocked out or close to it saving them from potentially major damage
@wonderbread1966
@wonderbread1966 Жыл бұрын
And typically when on the ground and a soccer kick is utilized is when someone is on all 4's preventing the person on the ground from protecting their head. Hands are busy holding themselves up or pushing themselves to their feet, not worrying about blocking your head.

Something Mike hinted at towards the end I think is a part as well, the general audience probably doesn't really want to see, or at least its probably better not to expose a general audience to, some of the less sportsmanlike maneuvers. If you fishhook someone and they tap from it, that's not a satisfying way to end the fight, if they fight the fishhook and end up tearing into the cheek that's probably on the "oh I did not want to see that" side of things. Similar for head stomping / soccer kicks, it goes from a fight to sadistic violence which is a bit unnerving.
@DaTimmeh
@DaTimmeh Жыл бұрын
I feel like they also underestimate how much more damaging soccer kicks are, laying on the ground means the body is planted, so a lot more of the force goes to the head and neck. It might have the same power as a standing head kick, but with a higher point of gravity(and less friction with ground) spread the force more across your body. Plus, if they’re on the ground, chances are they aren’t able to defend themselves well, and may already by half out
@kaspershaupt
@kaspershaupt Жыл бұрын
@@DaTimmeh yeah your head can't go anywhere, so it has to absorb more force then a standing head kick. I guess it also takes way less skill and not as risky as a head kick

@biohazard724

@@kaspershaupt the kick is absorbed by a MUCH shorter fulcrum whereas if you're both standing the recipient of the kick can roll with it, stumble around, or fall down all of which dissipates the force over more time. It also looks better.

First, Mike's impersonation of Ramsey is awesome. B, I think a downed opponent should be revised to on back or belly. If you are on your hands and knees, or sitting vertically, you are still holding yourself up. You are able to move in a variety of ways. You can use one arm to block. You can defend yourself from these positions. It won't be the most effective defense ever, but you can still protect yourself more than not. Finally, I loved the soccer-kick fake-out. The looks on everyone's faces before the head-swap was terrific.
@JCPRuckus
@JCPRuckus Жыл бұрын
As Rokus pointed out, you have almost no ability to roll with a strike when you're on the ground. That includes if you're on your hands and knees or sitting. I would allow kicks to the body, but not the head. I don't think it adds anything to the sporting competition, and I do believe it's unnecessarily more risky than kicks to the head of a standing opponent in most cases.
@badwerds
@badwerds Жыл бұрын
@@JCPRuckus i dunno, I think the ability to save yourself from head kicks when you go down let's a lot of people skate from essentially fight losing positions
@JCPRuckus
@JCPRuckus Жыл бұрын
@@badwerds - You're missing the point. It's a safety issue. If I punch you in the back of the head and detach your brain stem, then I'd win the fight too. But you're not allowed to hit to the back of the head because it's a sport, not an actual life and death battle... Perspective... Get some.
@grahamhill676
@grahamhill676 Жыл бұрын
@@JCPRuckus Seth said that a soccer kick is comparably powerful to a head kick...But let's he honest. It isn't. Stamping down on someone head with all your weight or winding up a full powered kick across someone's head is way worse. A traditional soccer kick is fairly likely to break someone's neck too. There's nowhere for the head to move and thus no cushioning of the blow. All that force is going into the skull, to the floor, and back through the skull.
@JCPRuckus
@JCPRuckus Жыл бұрын
@@grahamhill676 - I'm not even arguing he's wrong. The standing soccer kick and a standing kick to a standing opponent might hit just about as hard, but the difference is, as you said, in how far you can move your head to absorb the blow. It's the difference between using your brakes to make an emergency stop from 50 mph and using a brick wall. One might toss you around uncomfortably, the other has a pretty good chance to kill you... I'm just assuming he wasn't talking about a running soccer kick.

Soccer Kicks do change the game a little bit. They discourage BJJ players from scooting around on their butts the entire fight. If you watch Topuria vs. Hall, there were many times where Topuria could have stomped/ soccer kicked Ryan Hall into oblivion. Sakuraba also soccer kicked Royler Gracie really hard in their fight and it forced Royler to think twice about butt scooting on the ground the whole time.
@uuh4yj43
@uuh4yj43 Жыл бұрын
scooting happened a lot in pride tho, and they allowed soccer kicks, and people used them very often and very well. modern mma has way less butt scooting than early on, in my point of view, rules for passivity and scoring discourage it much more than soccers kicks do, without upping the risk for the athletes.

I am generally okay with rules that are intended to improve the public perception of a sport, as long as they do not significantly alter the way the game is played. However, I believe that some rules can have the opposite effect, such as the rule against knees to a downed opponent. This rule has led to some fighters intentionally dropping to the ground as a strategy and made many positions that would be unsafe safe.

It's not the soccer kicks it's the roundhouse kick. Even amongst pro fighters a roundhouse to the head of a standing opponent is difficult and it loses power as a result. When an opponent has three points of contact so crouching/kneeling, they are perfectly positioned for a kick that can cause lasting damage.

I think an interesting way to test the standing head kick vs soccer kick power would be to put the cube on a cobra bag and then put the cube on the ground attached to a heavy bag. In one instance a KO results in the head transferring that force to a pivot point (your feet/ the base of the cobra bag) in the other there is no pivot point so all the force is transferred.
