Aha the old MPI engine, which I know very well in our Fabia, mines the 74bhp version, you do have to work these hard, but great at higher revs, I had my doubts with it being in a estate but it's proved me wrong. I actually prefer this engine over the engine in my Citroen as I find it to be a hoot! It's very similar inside to the Fabia which is no bad thing the gearbox got me a couple of times but you simply push down and select reverse. It's not a bad long distance cruiser either with great fuel economy, drive it very very sensibly and you will see you return 60mpg plus. As always Sir a most excellent review.

The five speed gearboxes on these late 6C Polos come from the Up!/Mii/Citigo, and I have always found them to be a bit of a pain, to be honest. The six speed has reverse in the conventional Volkswagen position, which is a lot better. I once got stuck for five minutes in a Mii as I couldn't get the thing into reverse, despite knowing that I had to push it down and pull it to the right... I also found the 73 bhp 1.0 MPi very underpowered when I drove a Fabia with it in two years ago, although it was quite economical. This was so underpowered that it was actually dangerous pulling out of junctions in it.

I do like the looks of this Mk5 Polo especially the alloy wheels. The interior does look quality and comfortable and it does sound quiet and refined. The 1.0 litre naturally aspirated engine has the advantage of no extra turbo or cooling complications to worry about. I have driven both of our 1.0 litre Picantos both 4 cylinder and 3 cylinder for long distances on motorways with only 60 to 64 bhp and they have been absolutely fine so a strongly built vehicle like a Volkswagen Polo should be a good enough cruiser. In perspective I used to drive a Ford Cargo truck with a 6.0 litre six cylinder engine and identical performance to a Citroën 2CV , ie. 0 to 50 mph in about 30 seconds and a top speed of 65 mph. It was a joy to cruise in at 60 to 65 all day. The 1.0 litre turbo petrol does sound ideal but don't let a 59 bhp output put you off.

This Polo is dangerously slow, quite literally. The Miis and Up!s with this engine are bad enough (as me how I know), but this is considerably heavier, and so trying to pull out of junctions is terrifying. As such, I am unable to recommend it. The Mark I Picanto is much lighter than this as well.

A far better looking car than its replacement , single shot CD in glovebox crazy, multi changer I could understand. I just have an irrational loathing of VW after experiences with 1998 Passat !

Yes, this late facelifted model does indeed look very neat, these were big sellers for Volkswagen when the Mark V was current, and they still are now. Mr Coleman doesn't like VWs either, don't worry!

The most distracting thing I noticed, which would set off anyone with OCD, was the fact that the driver's door glass rubber weather-seal was partially misaligned - (visible from 0:50 to 04:45) - quite possibly due to someone either opening or closing the door by grabbing the door frame when the window was down and thereby inadvertently dislodging it. That could also have created quite a bit of additional wind noise when driving along at motorway speeds, due to that driver's door window not sealing effectively when fully closed. ;)

Aren't you being a bit too picky, here, sir? You haven't mentioned a single thing about the car or the video at all other than the window seal.

This model VW Polo 'Vivo' is ubiquitous on the roads in South Africa as it is currently the cheapest VW model on sale here. However, they are also one of the most hijacked cars here, as they are stolen & stripped down and their parts sold off as illegal spares, oftentimes within an hour of being misappropriated by gunpoint from their rightful owners... most VW Polo 'Vivos' are either used for car rental agencies or for government departmental fleet usage.

Our Passat B4 had the same coolant tank, I think it goes even further back than that.

Just out of interest, dont know if you still remember or not, what bhp was this polo? Didnt seem to catch it in the video.
@lloydvehicleconsulting Жыл бұрын
It's definitely in the video, but it was the 59 bhp version, and if was incredibly slow...
