I have carried these for years in my survival kit.... you pointed out most of the uses that I carry these for and I also learned some new ideas for using the wrapper and tube.... There are a few other ideas that you didn't cover, that I have thought of or tried over the years... blister treatment to give a little extra padding against further blisters... God forbid you should need it, but can be used for an eye patch.... On one camping trip I was using a knife quite a bit and started developing a "hot spot" where the poorly made handle was threatening to blister my hand so I taped a flattened out tampon to the handle in that spot and that little extra padding helped to avoid the blister... perhaps one of the best discoveries I made for the use of a tampon was that it makes the BEST char cloth I have ever used.... the thickness of the pad encourages a very big, robust ember, whereas a normal piece of char made from flat material such as t-shirt or denim burns along the edge well enough but the tampon really is a huge difference... once I discovered that, I went home and began making "char capsules" to put in my kits as a ready-made, waterproof way to carry individual portions of char for starting fires...... Flatten out tampon.... put into altoids tin and put into fire until it becomes char... cut the charred tampon into smaller bits like 1/2" x 1/2" ( or maybe a bit smaller ).... cut some plastic drinking straws into 1" lengths.... use a lighter to melt one end of the straw a little then quickly crimp it shut using needle nose pliers or multi tool.... stuff a piece of the char into the opened end and pack it in with a pencil or stick..... melt opened end and crimp as the other side was done.... Now you have a completely waterproof capsule(s) that can be added to the "fire kit".... when ready to use just cut one end off the straw and pinch it to get the char out.... hit it with some sparks and viola, you have a great ember for getting that fire going... also used this same method for making capsules stuffed with tampon bits treated with Vaseline.... to make larger capsules, use those large sized pixie sticks sugar candy straws or large size novelty straws... EDIT... Just ran across a video where you use straws as capsules.... feel kind of silly that I wrote out the method for making them when It's a subject you already knew.... anyhow god bless.

Combat medics usually don’t carry tampons. The most absorbent ones will absorb about 18 grams of blood, which isn’t enough to stop hemorrhages from a gunshot or stab wound. Also, you have to stop the bleeding at the source or the blood will pool internally. As always though, great video Sootch! I really enjoy your content. Liked and subscribed.

When I was the ripe-old age of 8 or 9, I sliced a 3" gash in my left thigh. As a kid, all I thought to myself was that Maxi-Pads are pretty absorbent. So I limped down the hall, snuck a Stay-Free outta' my Mom's cabinet & applied it to the inside of my Jammies (trousers) over night. Next morning & not thinking ahead of time, I tore the coagulated pad from my leg so I still had to go get stitches. +LEO1WOLF I recently had abdominal surgery and the incision wouldn't heal. My Dr actually pulled out a pad and put that on the incision. It was one of the new super thin yet super absorbent kind. They never stuck like the gauze did. Part of the reason it didn't was the gauze would pull off the forming scab. I think it has to do with the kind of pad you use.

Funny story about Tampons... I had a really bad nose bleed way up in my nasal cavity. It just wouldn't stop. So I went to urgent care. A Doc pulled a box out with the name "Rhino Rocket by Tampax". It was a shorter version of a tampon and he rammed that sucker with forceps WAY up my nose, it hurt like hell. Then he taped the dangling string to my cheek and said I was good to go. I was like OH HELL NO. I was not walking around with a tampon up my nose and a string taped to my cheek. I made him remove it and use gauze lol

Good vid! Thanks for sharing. Especially like the water pre-filter. Anything to get rid of some of the gunk before boiling, chemical treatment, or running through a commercial filter is a big help. We have the Sawyer Mini & their 181 kit. Can easily see the worth prefiltering into the 1/2 water bottle & then using the Mini's straw to drink. FWIW, recently put both tampons & pads in all of our kits, including the vehicle GHB's. With the latter, never know when having them on board, may help another traveler, while waiting for paramedics. For those who can't bring themselves to buy feminine products, just go to WalMart. Throw a box into your cart filled with "manly" stuff. Use the self-service checkout line. The scanner won't notice when you blush. ;-)

Here's a crazy thought - I just watched your video on survival uses for coffee filters, and this was the next video to come up. Now, I know that there is history behind using these things as emergency wound plugs for penetrating wounds (like bullet holes). I also know that there's a risk of leaving cotton fibers behind when it is removed. What do you think about combining the two? Put the tampon in a coffee filter, and then shove that in the hole?

I have a good one for you, uses for non perishable foods, like twinkies and ramen noodles, these things can be eaten but ramen noodles soaked in antifreeze make an excellent fuel source for mini stoves, or use twinkies for bait in traps? You may have to include multiple types of foods in the same video but what prepper doesn’t have quite a but of these laying around, not as a primary food source but as something easy and cheap.

Also the OB brand is shorter and meant to expand wider and squarer than the tampax brand or imitator type generics that you were using which expands long and flat , therefore, o.b.s are better filterers and better absorbers.
@kayceegreer44186 жыл бұрын
o.b. (yes, lower case letters) brand tampons are smaller, more compact/ compressed. Have no plunger so costwise, no waste. The plastic STRAWS (the fat section- not the skinny )from other brands can be reloaded with the o.b. type plug and used for filtering water. Match the absorbency rating of o.b. brand to the sizes of plunger from the other brands or it won't be sufficient filtration (junior, light, medium, heavy - u can't load a junior in a med straw- it won't fill it wall to wall tightly enuf to filter properly nor put a hvy into a med or light, u can't suck hard enuf to get water thru). Peel the wrapper, and the string cuz you'll have to load the flower- petal-like "business end" of the STRAW by inserting the stringed bottom of the plug and then with oral suction draw the string thru the finger grip portion of tha STRAW. Pull the string taut and place the loaded straw barely into water so it begins to soak up water from the tip. DO NOT just dump it incautiously into the ?bad? water! As it absorbs and expands to fill the space you can suck filtered water thru. The used STRAWS can be sanitized in hot water and sufficient amount of everclear or other 155-190 proof brand or vodka (in a larger amount, tho). ANOTHER IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE o.b. Brand, is that the string is compressed to the bottom of the plunger-less plug. U pull it loose when you need to. The smaller, compact size requires less room in a pocket, bag, shave or first aid kit, tackle box... pretty inconspicuous really.

I know this is an older video and not sure if it’s been discussed, but as an EMT, i’d never use a tampon to stop bleeding (i.e. a GSW or Puncturing wound of any sort). Not enough material to stop major bleeding in any capacity. Use a TQ, Direct Pressure or some sort of dressing like an occlusive dressing. If ANY medic carries these, it’s not for hemorrhage control lol most likely just for female patients.

Candle: You can use traditional sunflower cooking oil and canned fish oil too. I heard both was used in practice during Yugoslav civil war. Water: tampon fibers combined with a coffee filter is a quite effective method. Injuries: It is important but usualy forgotten fact: fibers of tampon could be trapped inside the wound > it could cause inflammation and infection.
@jennij93898 жыл бұрын
I'm not reading all of the comments so I hope this isn't terribly redundant. Use the rod like piece of plastic to push the cotton fibrous part out of the plastic sheath. This should work w/o causing any damage to the cotton. However, If you are concerned about the cotton shredding or being damaged when you do this, simply use the rod to push the cotton out out the open end (beginning at the tapered end). This should be much quicker and easier than carefully pulling the cotton out the open end of the sheath. If you are using this for a nosebleed or for dressing a wound, place intact tampon (inside the applicator) into your nostril/wound and push the rod until the cotton is in your nose/wound, then remove the applicator. You may want to leave the string attached/intact for easy retrieval. So, this long explanation is basically me teaching you how to properly use a tampon, lol!
@sallyvillarreal42948 жыл бұрын
Dubs J -Yes, that is how it's designed to come out of the applicator. The stick part is the plunger, and it's used to push the tampon out of the applicator.

Mr.Migido, We used to mine in Alaska. We were often far from help. I and a few of the crew got Giardia from unboiled water, A mistake of water containers, boiled vs non boiled. It was very bad. We call it Beaver Fever in Alaska. Upon getting back to town we went to see the Doc. He said the little beasties reside in ones colon. So that when we evacuate they swim against the tide and remain in our bodies, hence continuing our sickness IE loss of fluids from the diarrhea . He further said that tobacco anesthetizes the little beasties and they then cannot swim the tide and are evacuated..allowing for us to get better. He never said tobacco is a preventive, only a old time treatment. He suggested eating snuff but any tobacco should do. I have done this and a sandwich with plenty of mayo worked for me. I needed to be eating a full meal otherwise my stomach did not like the tobacco very much. I personally boil the heck out of my water and bought the very economical Sawyer Mini on Amazon. BTW this does not poison or kill them just makes them "sleep" so that they won't swim back up into the colon and keep you sick. We also used tobacco in a poultice with spittle for stinging insects, bees, wasp, especially hornets. Peace William

Good effort trying to find uses for the applicator and packaging, but the ones sold over on this side of the pond normally don't come with them (or the huge plastic wrapper), and have more fluff for the size. They're compressed to about the size of a finger bone (proximal phalanx) and shrink-wrapped, so you can pack an altoids can full of them. Way more useful in my survival packs.

As a son of late matron midwife, a point of order has to come to the fore here. Tampons are made from PAPER, similar to fluffy toilet paper. I've demonstrated that well soaked with vaseline (petrolum jelly) in such, usually can give you a hot flame for 5 mins, but also using cotton wool balls can be used like this.

Female pads are similar to tampons, and will absorb a lot of liquid. People that travel keep some in the car to absorb coolant or oil that leaks. I can't think of a use for an absorbent pad in survival, except for cleaning a pot/pan after cooking. Maybe it useful for packing a wound.

OMG, I used to carry vaseline in my guitar case for smoothing out the vibrato action...and people used to wonder if I kept it for other lubrication purposes...Lord alone knows what they'd think about me carrying Tampons and vaseline in a bug-out bag lol Seriously, though, excellent tips, so much repurposing can be done with household -and handbag lol- items...do you find that as you go about with your life, that you keep seeing other uses for things? I often get funny looks when I'm 'fondling' and starring at items that my imagination sees as having another use -classic is any can or container, I always see them as a stove lol

I am always looking for sales on non-scented maxi pads. These are great bandages when used in conjunction with Ace wrap or SWAT-Tourniquet (pressure configuration versus tourniquet configuration). My female friend walks the other direction in a store when I ask in loud voice if the price is good.

Would adding some charcoal with the tampon help with the filtration of the water? Like, last ditch effort using parts of a coal from a fire?
