In this tutorial, I’ll be explaining the difference between full-frame, crop sensor (sometimes called APS-C sensors), and micro 4:3 sensors. I’ll be explaining all about crop factors and the effects different sensor sizes have on the focal lengths of lenses. I’ll be doing this with a lovely drawing, then I’ll be putting all of this into practice with 3 cameras to visually show you the effect they have on your images.

This is the first video I've seen that actually explains sensor size. It also bonus-answered my question 'is the rebel xti crop sensor or apsc?'... Turns out, 'yes'.

Well, an old dog (me) can learn new tricks (sensor size knowledge). Back in the film days, I owned my own film gear (35mm Arriflex), taught beginning filmmaking at UCLA back in the 70's, was Head of Production at McCann-Erickson Advertising where I was on staff for almost 2 decades and shot my own television specials (my favorite was Vincent Price riding roller coasters). I've never learned so much so quickly about something I was so ignorant about as what you were able to explain to me. I thank you for taking the time to help many of us - realizing that most of us in photography and filmmaking are visual people...and so you used visual techniques. I look forward to exploring more of The School of Photography. Thanks!

I use the Olympus EM1ii once it’s in your hands and looking through the viewfinder, you really don’t think about cropped sensors, you just zoom in and out to get the perspective you want. Using a fixed prime you move yourself physically. Using the EM1ii along with a pro lens that is stabilised allows you to take photos handheld in low light for up to 4 secs. Great at night when wandering around. I do not take a tripod with me. It makes photography more spontaneous and enjoyable. I also use the Samyang 7.5mm fisheyes lens. Great for night shots too, so tiny and light it’s a joy to use. Micro four thirds so versatile lightweight , for professional use too. As a lot of pros are moving to 4/3 rds. Enjoy

Thank you :D this video helped alot. I've got a 7DM2 and was looking at going FF with a 6DM2 but I'm not a big fan of the 6Ds features I'd lose but my BIGGEST problem right now is space. I have a small studio and my best prime lenses cause me to have to stand so far back to take pictures. I knew going FF would help with this but I never realised by how much! This video was just what I needed :) I was deciding between the Canon 24-70mm 2.8 lens or upgrading my body but I think I'll go FF body now since I have a sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 for that range.

Hi thanks for the comments. There’s never a one answer to questions like this I’m afraid but I can say this. Don’t worry too much about camera features as you will be using manual modes when using photography on a more pro or semi pro level. Manual modes are the same on any camera. Also, your limitation is what forces you to be creative so embrace them and do your best with it. Hope that helps. 😊

The sensor size also impacts the f/stop for equivalent pictures, might be good to have a video covering this, to get the same background blur, with a smaller sensor size you need a lower f/stop.

Not only that, it also affects the image noise, so if you want the same result you need to use equivalent focal length, equivalent F-number, and equivalent ISO. And it's not complicated at all. But really, this School of Photography guy has no idea how cameras work. That's evident both from this video and the DoF video he's linking to in his answer.
@Mir1189
@Mir1189 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcus3d Its true that M43 sensors have higher noise, but there is no calculation for that. Its completely independent to format or sensor size (its more related to analog-digital signal amplifier). 1. DOF a) 50 mm F5.6 FF equals 25mm F2.8 M43 in terms of DOF, but the light is more intensive by 2 stops. b) 50 mm F5.6 FF also equals 50mm F5.6 M43 in both DOF and light intensity, but the image is cropped (exactly as shown here). Scenario a) is something what a lot of people does not like to hear, because to get deeper DOF on FF they have to stop down on a nice F1.4 lens to get entire subject in focus. Also it means that M43 does not need 2 extra ISO stops if exposure is fixed on 1/125.
@marcus3d
@marcus3d 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mir1189 Your scenarios are correct. However, in a) the light is 4 times as intense while the area is 1/4 as big, making the total amount of light the same. In sensors of roughly the same generation (and very little difference between generations) the image noise is proportional to the total amount of light captured. So f/4 on FF will yield about the same amount of image noise as f/2 on MFT. No direct advantage either way, unless going to extremes.
@Mir1189
@Mir1189 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcus3d That calculation is little bit more complicated, but in general F1.0 means that you have exactly same level of light hitting the sensor as the scene. Higher numbers make it less intense, lower numbers make it more intense. F2.8 is equal among all formats, the difference of Crop Factor is in focal length and the DOF effects. But if you are concerned about noise, you can use UV filters. UV is not visible, but is the one with highest energy, and even when sensors have UV filters of their own, you can remove some blue haze which occurs in optics.

Hi Marc, really like this video and just wanted to add the following comment to help others ; the various cropped size of sensors gives the same effect as moving a 35mm sensor further back in the body in relation to the lens and that's why the focal length is altered. Nice demo on the focal lengths of different sensor sizes. In an era where mobile phones have 100 megapixels in their small sensors, I would love to know how image quality is influenced by the relationships between pixel count, pixel size and sensor size? It would also be useful to know what aspects of the image quality (like sharpness, dynamic range, colour representation, contrast etc) are determined by the sensors and its pixels, and what aspects are governed exclusively by the lenses used. If you have already covered this, can you please share the link, thank you so much.

A good explanation. As an ex film (35mm) photographer I used to think that a 50mm lens gave you a normal view and that a 35 or 28 or 24 were wide angle, and that an 85 or 105 were for portraits and 200mm etc were telephotos. Those numbers are wired into my brain, just as feet and inches are. (I'm in my late 60s) Now due to cost limited budget I have a crop sensor DSLR camera (Nikon DX) and I am always having to convert in my brain.Before I put the lens on my camera. So I will try to get your chart. Thanks

You can use a FF lens on a crop sensor, but not a crop lens on a FF. In his pic, imagine the circle on the 35mm rectangle goes around the corners of the apsc. It wouldn't cover the whole sensor. Some FF have an option to use as a crop sensor by turning off pixels, probably to increase zoom.

As I see it M43 is not going anywhere any time soon, just as APSC has run along Full frame for many a year. As long as Panasonic and Olympus provide unique features like Panasonic’s high video bit rates, anamorphic formats and Olympus’s extreme IBiS and long exposure viewing that lets you see the image build up to taste! Panasonic have officially said that M43 is a huge part of their market and that they shall always support it. Just because a larger format suddenly becomes significantly cheaper than before does not mean that the smaller formats are threatened, if so , we would all be discussing “shall full frame die soon?” as Fuji are now releasing relatively cheap medium format cameras, they are even releasing a version with IBiS in the not to distant future! I think the iPhone has proved that a camera with a tiny sensor that has great features and uses modern technology such as computational photography can actually create a situation where a camera with a larger format can become extinct such as point and shoots. They are all tools and some photographers might have every format in their arsenal to suit their needs or one might only need an iPhone! They can all coexist! 🙏🏾

Regardless the depth of field which is produced by each size, do u believe that there is any difference in "the look" or in the space rendering between a focal length on specific sensor size and its equivalents on the other sizes ?

By information, you mean image circle. Full frame sensor needs lenses that can produce a large image circle that can cover the sensor. Therefore, at 50mm let's say, the full frame image appears much wider than the image produced by a cropped sensor.
@alphanimal
@alphanimal 5 жыл бұрын
Two things should also be noted when using a different sensor size, because focal length is not everything that changes: 1. it also changes the amount of light the sensor receives (smaller area = less light), so the ISO has to be adjusted to compensate the amount of noise. 2. because cropping the image is basically zooming in, you also scale the amount of background blur. and you want to compensate by using a different F-stop
@theschoolofphotography
@theschoolofphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the comments. I'm afraid you're wrong with this. It's far too long to explain exposure in comments but you can learn photography properly here www.theschoolofphotography.com/complete-guide-to-photography Hope that helps 👍
@alphanimal
@alphanimal 5 жыл бұрын
Just try it yourself. Take two pictures with the same lens, same settings (same focal length, F-stop and ISO) but one with a full frame camera, the other one with an APS-C camera. The APS-C image will be the same image but cropped. Otherwise they will be the same and you can overlay them to check. When you zoom out on the APS-C camera to change the focal length to get the same framing, you'll notice you get different images. You have to adjust the F-stop to get the same background blur. You can place a point light source in the background to easily see the amount of background blur. Point is, when you adjust the focal length to compensate, you have to change F-stop too. It's the same with ISO, but harder to test because different sensors can produce different amount of noise.

I agree with@@alphanimal there is a bit more to it than Marc describes. I use FF and 4/3 cameras both with the same pixel count, so the ultimate resolution is the same. The FF doesn’t give more detail as Marc said. The differences between the two formats come down to bokeh and lowlight performance. Each photo site on the 4/3 sensor is roughly a quarter of the FX size and hence captures a quarter of the light which makes the lowlight and noise performance worse in shadow detail. The size difference also makes the 4/3 sensor more affected by dust. Overall though it’s horses for courses. For critical work my FX Nikon wins hands down but for travel convenience my Olympus 4/3 is the one to grab.

Hello, the Nikon 1 J5, claims to have a 1 inch sensor, is good to know the difference when you used a "Mirror Less Lens or Dslr" you frame the subject take the picture. Any difference in brand name, is not noticeable for most pictures taken, the sensor is enhanced by the LENS used. My approach is not good please let me know.

no it is, you also need to multiply the aperture on a crop sensor, so, if you've got a 50mm f2, the equivalent on a m43 camera will be a 25mm f1, I know that you are a professional photographer, but aperture alsho changes on a crop senson camera, Tony & Chelsea Northrup made a good video about this topic. I mean, yes, its the same in specs and exif, but that not an equivalent.

Wide angle lenses create the fisheye distortions at the edges. Does it mean that a micro 4:3 with a 14 mm lens will not have distortions but a full frame sensor will?
@theschoolofphotography

It won't be a fish eye but it will be wide angle.

The wide lens forms the same image in both cameras. The only difference is that the larger sensor is capturing more of the image around the outsides, where most of the distortion exists. the smaller sensor is capturing a smaller area of the same image in the center where there is less distortion.

So..does a full frame camera take a more detailed image than the 4:3's at both being the same focal length..or what I mean is...using what ever lens to get the image to look the same on both camera's as far as what you see on the final image, because there are more pixels on a full frame sensor?

Hi Erik, just make sure you get a lens that fits your camera, they will not necessarily be interchangeable. You won’t be able to put a 4:3 lens on a crop sensor camera for example. In general lenses made for full frame cameras will fit on crop sensor cameras but it won’t work the other way. Hope that helps.

i think beginners photographers should not worry about all these technical stuff of size of camera sensor. As long as you take good composed pictures you are ok with whatever camera sensor size you have.

The School of Photography what i meant to say is that when we go to buy lenses it come under 2 categories fullframe or crop sensor .so what i meant to is if i attach a lens which come for specifically for crop sensor camera on a full frame sensor would it impact on the image

The School of Photography to make you understand what i am trying to say is please go and check out the sony website and for Sony newest a7 3 check lens compalibilty. There are some lenses that are not fully compatible and it said and i quote "the angle of view will be narrowed down to a APS-c sensor"

Hi Sarthak, in general a crop sensor lens will not fit on a full frame camera however a full frame lens will fit on a crop sensor camera. Just make sure whatever lens you are buying will fit specifically onto your camera before you buy it. Hope that helps.

I use a micro 2/3rds a few people refer to it as a crop sensor or aps-c sensor. No mater how you slice it a size complex is a size complex. Having said that mine is still bigger than yours not as big as his but bigger than yours. 😉

I just got the Olympus e520...and yes it is a dinosaur compared to todays camera...but...it is a 4:3's sensor...so what you saying is ....to get a full frame photo I would have to use a wider focal length, or say somewhere around 14mm...oh, just thought of something, that is the one of the lens that came with this camera..a 14-42mm. So a four thirds camera would do landscape or wide angle shots , or the same as a APS-C camera with a different focal distance...

A full-frame sensor IS based on the analog, 35mm film size, but it is NOT 35mm wide! The “35mm” refers to the width of the film, in other words the OPPOSITE dimension from what he indicates, and the frame size is 24 x 36mm. Back to school for this teacher!!

The crop camera's are enlarging the image to fill the same amount length and width as the ff camera . A 35mm lens is still the same 35mm lens when you put it on a crop camera. It does no enlarge the subject . The reason the photo looks so much bigger like in the photo at 9:30 is because the processing of the image is enlarging the the entire image to make it the same length and width of the ff image . If the processing of the crop camera did not enlarge the image the subject would be the same size and more white would be around the edges . If you go back and look at your drawing at 4:51 you can see that the ff camera is at the edge of the framing or your black line so there is no space outside the framing and the blue line you made shows that once the photo is taken you should have the area between the blue line out to the black line . As you can see at 9;30 the blue line is enlarged to the black line and that's why you don't see the space between the blue line and black line that should have a white frame from the blue line to the black line . The crop camera is digitally enlarging the photo to fill the space . That's why the building looks larger because it is larger . If the processing didn't enlarge the image there would just be more empty space around the borders . So to keep the image of whats being framed by the sensor the same size you have to set your pixel length and width to match the sensor when processing . If you want to use the same 35mm lens on a crop camera but you wanted the blue line to move out to the black line or capture the same length and width of what the ff cameras does (the black line ) All you have to do is move back till the blue line moves to the black line or in other words you get the same field of view . then take the photo and they will be the same size and show the same image . You don't have to change the lens mm to get the same field of view, you just move back . Why are you enlarging the crop cameras photos to fill in the space out to the 35mm size ? If you want to show the differences each sensor makes then process the photo to the sensor size . If you don't have empty space around the borders of the photos then your not showing the sensors correct size as it compares to the FF camera photo . The objects should be the same size as the 35mm ff camera just just less of the objects like you show in the drawing . Make another video and do it the right way . Don't enlarge the photos of the crop cameras to match the frame size of the 35mm ff camera leave them at the correct size so that the subjects are all the same size just less of the objects . And instead of switching lens just use the same lens and back up till the field of view is matched .

Why is the crop photos enlarged to the same width and length of the FF cameras length and width ? They aren't they left the same size with empty space around them since its cropped ? You are saying the photo of the crop cameras are is not being enlarged . For some reason you can't see that the photos of the crop cameras are making the objects bigger . If you enlarge the crop camera image out to match the same borders as the FF camera it has to be enlarged wouldn't you agree ? If the crop camera was not enlarging the image it would be the same size as the FF cameras image with blank space from where its cropped to the border wouldn't you agree ?

The School of Photography so are you saying that you will always get a better image on a full frame? I’m not sure of the cons other than price, size weight! I have a Canon M50 and it’s a great camera but wasn’t sure of what the best dslr would be that would be as good or better to avoid having to use a lens converter? It’s my only gripe about a mirrorless. Would going crop sensor dslr be much better than micro 4/3?

Feel free to share this information with the rest of the photography world, including passing this on to people who think differently than the people who actually make the gear. It's interesting to see what lots of people on the internet have to say about this subject, and it's also interesting to see how nobody asks the manufacturers what they have to say on this subject, so I decided to just ask the Nikon support team to find out what Nikon has to say on this subject. If you want the truth, just ask the manufacturers! This is a reply I got today from Peter Y. at Nikon about using a full frame lens on my Nikon crop sensor camera: "Thank you for contacting Nikon Canada. To keep it simple, there will be no change in aperture or light transmission by using an FX lens on a crop, or DX, body. The only change is the angle of view. You can see the official Nikon article pertaining to these differences by visiting the following link: www dot nikonusa dot com/en/learn-and-explore/a/products-and-innovation/the-dx-and-fx-formats.html There will be absolutely no changes to the aperture, it will stay true to the value shown on the LCD screen."

Dude... I love every one of your videos, but... 35mm film and full frame sensors aren't 35mm wide... the sensor is 36x24. 35mm film gets its name from the fact its 35mm from top to bottom including the rebate. Its only 1mm I know, but its been driving me up the wall
