The Steps of Humility and Pride is another good one. St Bernard I think wrote it.

Chotke is a prayer rope, similar to a rosary

I am a native English speaker and I had the same question when he said that word. Apparently it is a type of Catholic prayer rope usually with 100 knots, but sometimes with 33 or 150. God bless. I believe it comes from the Eastern tradition.

I believe it's a prayer rope of 100 knots where you pray "Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the World, have mercy on me, a sinner" at every knot (to be done daily). There are even meditative breathing you can do with each phrase. I'm a Latin rite, so I can't say more.

A Chotke (Russian) or Komboskini (in Greek) is a Prayer Rope used by Orthodox Christians as an aid while reciting the Jesus Prayer, also known as the Prayer of the Heart or interior prayer. The Prayer Rope can be a bracelet or Necklace made of (usually) black wool and comprised of special knots, generally 33, 50, 100 or 150 knot. It is similar to the Catholic Rosary, however, as Catholics use a rosary to recite the Stations of the Cross, Orthodox Christians use the Chotke to assist in counting the repetitions of the Jesus Prayer: "Lord, Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me a sinner". It is said the rope was developed many hundreds of years ago by a monk. As he worked at his chores, he started using stones to keep count of his repetitions but soon found they became too heavy to carry around, so he made knots in a rope. However, the devil would come and untie his knots. As a result, he developed a special way of making the knots that contain 7 crosses in each knot. These knots were too difficult for the devil to untie!

Why do Orthodox and Byzantine Catholics take this so seriously, but not so much the Roman Catholics
@nething943 ай бұрын
Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

If people actually read the Ladder, they would see he teaches about Hesychasm, which Catholics unfortunately do not believe in
