I started out with a loops and threads to practice that I got from Goodwill but the gears are stripping out so I bought me Sentro today because where I am making Christmas gifts but I'm going to save up to get Addi my personal opinion start out cheap to see if it's something you'd like doing then build yourself up from there because the worst thing you can do is sink money into it and not like doing it

Just starting out with knitting machines and was going to get the Addi. The price jumped and I decided to start with the 48 and 40 Sentros. My thought is if I can learn to make hats, ear warmers and scarves well enough I’ll be able to make the money to buy an Addi. Thank you for you honest review and showing the hats side by side.

Hi Chrystal. I also have both machines. I put clear tape on my table which allows the Sentro's cups to safely suction.
@kricketcooper50243 жыл бұрын
I stole the big glass cutting block from the kitchen and used a large paper clip like maybe lawyers use to keep big stacks of paper together. It’s about 2” wide and it holds my cutting board to the table and the suction cups to the cutting board. It took me a while to figure out how to get it to work for me but it doesn’t move at all right now. I have had at least 5 Sentro knitting machines because I also had problems with the counter on a couple and the other ones seem to wear out over time. I was may have pushed it too far when I used a bulky 6 but even the one I didn’t press as hard got to the point where I could hear the gears skipping and grinding all the time and it got to hard to make hats on. I asked for an Addi for Christmas but the price went up way more than they were willing to pay. I remember a video showing the Addi king size and the professional ones coming together for $300 and now it’s $350 for just the one.

@@kricketcooper5024 Have you used yours to make panels for blankets or sweaters?
@kricketcooper50243 жыл бұрын
No not yet. I just saw that you could make a blanket just the other day. I’ve made a poncho using panels with a crochet edge to keep it from rolling up. I’m almost done with it but have been having so much fun making hats for my granddaughter’s school 5 back up hats for each class that the teacher can give to a student who comes to school without a hat or loses it on the playground. I have just one more time around to do the finishing scallops on the poncho and I just have not wanted to crochet 😢 . I bought the thing on Etsy for making it work with a electric screwdriver but it hasn’t gotten here yet. I’m looking forward to making a blanket in the future but I hate having to do fringe and I think it needs it to be more complete. I watched a video of someone making a sweater and because it is mostly flat panels I feel a bit overwhelmed with the thought of that many panels. Panels are so much harder than tubes because at each end you have to make sure you didn’t drop a stitch. I’m thinking panels might be easier on an Addi if you have the stops because they don’t let you crank past the last stitch and you don’t have to worry about not going far enough to catch the edge stitches because you go until the stopper. This is what it looks like in the video. I’m hoping to get an Addi of my own soon.

I'm so absolutely thankful for you doing this comparrison. I've had the Sentro for awhile now and I have to completely agree with everything you said about it. I use the crank and can do a hat in very short order - around 15-20 minutes. I've had no problems using 3- or 4-weight yarn, but if I try to use Bulky 5-weight it **really** struggles and I get a lot of dropped stitches that I have to fix along the way. My row counter stopped working after about 4 hats or so... so now I just use a little manual row counter when the count is important. I made an entire afghan on my Sentro... instead of making a hat, I just kept cranking "tubes" that were 250 rows long, then crocheted the 6 double-knit panels together. It came out gorgeoous. I've never used the actual "panel" (P) setting on my Sentro. When I bought it, I did like you and watched TONS of reviews and usage videos FIRST of both the Sentro and the Addi. I decided to start with the Sentro mainly because of the price... knowing that "you get what you pay for". I knew it was somewhat inferior to the Addi, but it was also $200 cheaper, and I wasn't sure if it was something I was going to REALLY like the finished product (the knitted item). **Now that I know**, I would agree with you that an Addi is probably somewhere in my future because I believe also that it is a superior machine (of the two) and I'll save up the money to get one. Until then, my Sentro will still get the job done. I really appreciate your review/comparrison of them both and as always, you are spot-on in your review of the Sentro. Thank you, Crystal!! BTW.... how do I get a "Yarny Peep" hoodie? I don't see it on the scroll bar of the teespring merch at the top of the page (on my iPad). I got the "Bag O Day" hoodie (I showed it on my Instagram)... but I want a Yarny Peep one also! LOL [EDIT: Actually I found it!!! I had to go to the actual Teespring site. I ordered a Yarny Peeps hoodie (in purple!!!!) and a Yarny Peeps T-shirt (in purple!!)]

I have all 3 size Sentros, the 48, 40 & 22 and had them all over a year . Zero problem. The 48 & 40 suction to my table and kitchen island great so it really depends on the surface area. Since I mainly use the machines in my Work / Craft studio, and I’m now using an older table, I bought a piece of 12 x 12 tile from Lowe’s which costs me under $1 and my suction cups REALLY stick ! My 22 is the only one that doesn’t have suction so I just use a clamp and will add suction cups later . Now apparently ( and it hasn’t happened to you yet ) when going full blast with your drill , what happens over time is the friction of your handle will start to get really hot and your crank will melt into the machine . I’m in 2 circular machine groups and apparently that has happened to quite a few people and they have regretted it. I was shocked to hear that . And your counter breaking can also be caused by the full blast of your drill cuz it’s also what happened to others in both the Addi & Sentro. I prefer to hand crack so therefore , counter still working. I may get an adapter later tho and use an electric screwdriver. . So the 40 & 22 don’t have counters, I ordered each a magnetic counter and works like a charm ! So good luck that you don’t melt the crank into your machine !! I’m a crocheter, knitter & yarn spinner , but using these machines are so much fun to crank hats in so little time . OH, you will like the 22 for tube socks , leg warmers and arm warmers! You can do skinny scarves or braided scarves ( 3 tubes and braid) and of course all 3 so hats and scarves . My fave for scarves & headbands is the 40 because for me,, it’s the perfect width ! Thanks again for sharing your reviews!! Angel

I bought my Addi first and returned it two days later and bought the Sentro which I like better. I like that it has 2 extra needles for some ribbing patterns I want to try. It is quieter and turns easier. I might have bought a defective Addi because something was rattling on the inside which might be why it was harder to turn past the black needles. I heard what she said about the counter making the noise at the beginning of row, but this was more and with all 3 black needles.

I've been pretty happy so far with my Sentro that I got for around $70 on Amazon. Crystal's review of it was spot-on, but even though it is somewhat inferior to the Addi, it still works as advertised. I can not use Bulky yarns on mine though... it just doesn't like it. My row counter stopped working very early on so I use a manual row counter. To get it to stay in place on the table, I use Blue Tack that I got from Dollar Tree for $1... it's like a sticky putty that easily removed from any surface. I will still get an Addi one day, but I'm waiting for the price to come down. I also use knitting LOOMS and although they are manual, I have produced some very nice knitted items. Unlike **any** knitting machine, on a loom I can do special stitches like cables and ribbing and perl stitches. It takes me about as long to make something on a knitting loom as it would to crochet the same size item. Hope this helps!

Good morning. My husband bought me the Sentro. I was intimidated by the machine and only tried once. Now that my crochet Christmas gifts are finished, I'm going to work with the Sentro. Thanks for the review.

Thank you for the review! I always love a thorough comparison. I got this large 48-needle Sentro for Christmas. I think that the Addi makes much more sense for charity work and quick production for a handmade business, and would be worth the extra money in those cases, but I am happy with my Sentro for personal use. Happy new year!

Are you still happy? I'm 70 and my hands are wearing out after 50+ years of knitting. I get thrifted yarn that isn't worth using my hands for knitting. My thought was, "If I got a Sentro , then I could use up this yarn in hats for donating and save my time and hands for special projects." So, where are you at 2 years later? Do you wish you'd purchased an Addi at the start? $ is not the issue here, for me. I just don't want to buy 2 machines. Keeping in mind it's just hats (I live in Alberta Canada where we wear "toques" as 4-season fashion accessories), should I splurge?
@ravensnow2931 Жыл бұрын
@@robertmae3416 I am still happy with my Sentro. I don't need the Addi. I have actually gotten a big, flatbed knitting machine now because I enjoyed machine knitting so much. I still take out the Sentro when I want to make a "toque." I would suggest you buy the Sentro for the 48 pins. The Addi only has 46 pins and makes hats that are tight on many adult heads.

Thanks for your thoughts and recommendations Crystal, you're so helpful! I have had good results with the Sentro, even #5 yarn, but it needs to be pulled down in the center as you work or it does seem too tight/bunchy and it's easier to get tucked or dropped stitches. Anyways it made a beautiful single layer #5 alpaca/mohair hat. My stitch counter never worked from day 1, and I broke the yarn tensioner very quickly (my fault) so I just tension by hand. I took the legs off of it again bc hubby doesn't mind if it comes along on road trips, so I just set a non slip pad beneath it and don't let the project bunch up in the middle as I'm working. I just pull the item back up inside itself a bit and it's been effective. Would love an Addi someday, but I crochet and hand knit a lot, and the machine wouldn't help me with most of the complex textured things I like to make.

Hey there! I have a tip for those of you who have a sentro knitting machine! I use mine at the dining room table, which has one of those clingy 'soft plastic' table covers on it. The sentro suction cups latch onto the plastic table cover, and I had to pry the thing loose when I was done! It solves the problem with the sentro moving quite nicely!

Watching this for the second time after I got my Sentro. I already have a small Addi, and from my experience, as far as you stick to the size 3 and some thinner size 4 yarn, Sentro does the job just fine. I have made lots of hats and am currently working on a sweater.

I’ve had both the King Sized Addi and little Addi Express for years. Love them both. The Addi company used to use a digital counter and mine broke, so I bought a thumb counter. I’d love to see the addi with a few more needles like the Sentro, which I don’t have. My head is like a big pumpkin and the hats are tight on me. LOL But I love the quality of the Addi

I bought both sm and lg Addies several years ago. Both electronic counters didn’t work. I got ahold of the company and they sent me another set. They too stopped working. So I bought a battery operated counter on Amazon and attached it. No problems with counter still with the Addi I had my problems with yarn and everything. I now have 3 Addi, 3 Sentro (one was crap so I use it for parts) 1 Michaels and another small one not sure of the name. I learned a lot and can usually get any of them to work just fine. I don’t bother with # 5 weight just use that for Crochet. I like the Sentro because it makes a bigger hat. Watch every video you can on all knitting machines cause it really helps with learning.

That yarn you used on the hats is so pretty! What gauge do the knitting machines knit at? I’m interested in getting one for speeding up the bodies of sweaters (then I’d switch to hand knitting the decorative yokes), and all of the patterns I use are from the same designer and therefore have the same gauge. Thank you for your honest review!
