The Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition (5/2014, Tel Aviv).
Since its inception in 1974, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition is one of the foremost Piano Competitions in the world. Arthur Rubinstein, who gave his blessing to the competition, headed the jury of the first two competitions (1974 & 1977).
The competition, is held every three years in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Seong-Jin Cho is already one of the world's great pianists. He has not only the technical skills to master even the most challenging repertoire, but also the musical imagination that enables him to give a persuasive account of the composer's intentions as inscribed in the score while also making the piece his own. Though it is sad that even in the world of musical competitions, politics often plays a big part, since having won the Chopin competition in 2015, Cho is getting the attention he deserves; and music lovers around the world are being richly rewarded. History just repeated itself! Pianist Bruce Liu didn’t even placed at the 2017 Rubinstein Competition. Bruce Liu is the new winner of the 2021 Chopin Competition just this week!

The judges have discredited this competition. SJ.Cho's performance was a perfect and fantastic. It doesn't make sense that he came in third.

It irritates me to the point of frustration that the judges relied more on young Seong-Jin's FACE than they did on his impeccable and awesome technique, and his unique interpretation, so perfect, clear, and unaffected, of this Russian Warhorse. Other players (like Lang Lang) slam it to pieces and obliterate the keyboard, fulfilling the prophesies of the original critics of this piece, that it mistreats the piano. At least with young Cho's interpretation, there is still nobility and honest music in this concerto. Bless him. And to the judges: just because Rubinstein played with a poker face and a rigid body does not mean that Seong-Jin Cho has to!!

Same thing happened to the new 2021 Chopin Competition winner - Bruce Liu. Bruce didn’t even place in the 2017 Rubinstein competition. Bruce just won the Chopin Competition, and is now the toast of the Piano World!

Even Chopin Competition made a mistake by giving Ashkenazy 2nd place instead giving Adam Harasiewicz(obviously a Polish!) the top prize in 1955. SJ Cho knows that what's important is he and his audience not any competition because he was already so wise and mature at age 20!

Hello and sorry to wonder why people commenting here are so compelled to explain what they personally do, can do and can't ... its about the performance on the screen, its not a confession or a show-off forum :) About facial expressions, which is obviously not the point, we might think about someone trying to put a thread into a needle or, if you have ever witnessed such a thing, a plumber putting together two pieces of a pipe. They often stick out their tongue and nobody complains about that. Yes yes, it is a very difficult work, no need to hear that from a specialist able to "read through" it, its just totally obvious. The performance of the soloist was not deserving of some of the negative comments rendered here, re: facial expressions forcing mistakes. This 20 year old pianist is 20! He gets emotional, a bit theatrical, makes a face now and then - but seemed wrapped up in his music. I heard no mistakes. Tchaikovsky and other composers didn't write these concertos so the soloists, orchestra, and conductor would be nice to watch when they played the work. The composers wrote the music to provide pleasurable listening. Watch Emil Gilels, Andre Watts, Martha Agerich, and the like as they make faces during their play. Watch the stoic deadpan Horowitz performances to see the opposite. Better still, watch and ignore such things as you do what the composers intended - listen! As for this performance - I thought the pianist had fine dexterity and musical score sensitivity. His approach to the finale of movement 1 was emotional and sensitive. Unfortunately, the orchestra needed to be a bit more upbeat getting to the end. They were too humdrum at that point. Seong-Jin Cho has talent though (he took 3rd place). He would do well to visit with Maestro Myung-Whun Chung and his fine Seoul Philharmonic. Maestro Chung, a wonderful pianist and a leading conductor, could really polish this fella up. At 20 he is off to a fine start.

+Ron Crooker i also heard no audible mistakes. i do prefer more thunder in the final bars over the orchestra. the concluding octaves are almost as clean as can be, one missed note. he needs more power that is all.

+Ron Crooker Your comment is truly insightful. Thanks for enlightening me(and possibly many other classical music novices). I totally agree with your opinion that we should listen to music not to focus on the facial expressions. I bet you've already checked out Seongjin Cho's Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 with Seoul Philharmonic which had been played last April, he was superb indeed.

Third prize? This competition lost its value. And Cho proved that at the 2015 Chopin Competition. The juries and the winner of the Rubinstein Competitions just embarrassed themselves.

I think that's a tad dramatic. Trifonov, who's pretty widely recognized as one of the greats of our time, got third place in the Chopin Competition (essentially fourth, because two other pianists tied for 2nd). And yet he was awarded the first prize in the Rubinstein Competition the year after... These competitions are in some sense stupid anyways (but they are important for launching talented pianists' careers... and in that sense both the Chopin and Rubinstein did their job for Cho and Trifonov).
