In this video, I made thingy... er... machine (?) that separates water to Hydrogen and Oxygen gas. The basic idea for this generator design was taken from a Tested video ( • Tested Builds a Hydrog... ) and since they had pretty much no idea what they were doing, their generator was not very effective. This generator (made from PVC), even though it is quite small, can produce plenty of gas for some simple experiments.
I did want to make a giant one of these (this one was a "proof of concept"), but since the gasses are only being made at the very tips of the plates (as I suspected), I think it might be a whole lot more inefficient than making the gas with parallel plates like in my v4 generator.
Parts to build this:
Stainless steel - - amzn.to/2RoBtVz
Potassium Hydroxide - - amzn.to/2ISiT4w
PVC glue - - amzn.to/2InXO2I

yes amperage runaway is a problem with these things. you will just boil the water away at some point. So current control is key with these things. Control the current and you will have a nice consistent hho production without the over heating.

Brilliant illustration of the principle. I thing abrading the cathode and anode to increase the surface area and adding layers of plates for the same reason would optimise it.

Since a mole of gas fills a set volume and is based on the number of atoms in the gas, you could collect by using 2 chambers. The hydrogen side twice the volume of the oxygen side. Then for flash back, have a water lock flash arrester on both outlets from high pressure to ensure no mixing in tanks. Taller flash arresters are better as the pressure needed to push the water up is greater. Then use a densr wire mesh flash arrester at the torch, below the point it gets warm since hydrogen has a low auto ignition temp. Also HCl also works and won't alter the ratios as the chlorine basically instantly reacts beach to form HCl again of seperated. You get a white precipitate of using copper plate from copper chloride forming, but by using less reactive metals you minimize this.

Great simple design!!! You know that you can avoid overheating by using more plates, each charged plate can be placed close to a non charged plate and so on and so forth, this will drop the voltage and not waist so much energy or overheating causing steam to mix with the 2 gasses. I love how simple these things are to make, and the perfect voltage in a HHO generator is only about 3vlts, the rest of the current is converted to heat, so placing non charged plates in between charged plates will keep things cool enough not to make any steam, it's also much more efficient in all ways. thanks for the video, I am working on a large generator, one where I can use the mix of the 2 gasses to be able to weld, cut.... metal, but I also want to be able to separate the two gasses when I want to use for different applications. Did you ever experience this setup getting too hot? Seems like a lot of current for 1 plate for each charge, but hey if it works, it certainly doesn't look very hard to build. Have you ever just tried running 3 volts through the unit? 12 volts seems like overkill and if I understand this correctly, it's going to overheat in a short time, but I could be mistaken. Thanks again for your knowledge on this topic and build. Please let me know if you have experienced overheating issues with this setup, thanks Buddy!!!
@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, if I used more than one plate on each side the gasses would no longer be separated. The neutral plates still have a "+" and a "-" side which means both gasses are produced on the same side of a neutral plate. You're correct I am wasting energy by using 12v. The reason is that at the time I didn't have a power supply that could produce the amperage I needed at a low voltage. The optimal voltage is actually 1.23v but 2-3v is a good number to shoot for. Overheating is definitely an issue. I'll admit it's hugely inefficient. It was a "proof of concept" though. My much larger generator I have tuned pretty well. It produces a lot more gas for the same amount of energy. But the gas is mixed so... Hope this helped. It's a little mind-numbing to keep track of all the different variables lol.

Oh and I also heard, From watching videos, that you can produce more hydrogen in by increasing the surface area that the plates are contacting the water with. I saw one HHO generator On KZbin that the guy you stainless steel scrubbing pad with the sock over and wrapped over that sock with another set of stainless steel scrubbing pads That I made as well and it seem to produce out outrageous amounts of amps I will need to install some sort of ammeter or auto reset fuses To control the draw. Perhaps you can experiment with that as well. Also I have not heard of the chlorine poisoning before, so I will have to look into that however my question is if chlorine poison is produced by using sodium bicarbonate as well?

@@HappyMadScientist I believe even running just distilled water the amp exceeded my cars alternator output. Using the stainless steel scrubbing pads with a sock as a barrier leaves the smallest amount space between the cathode and anode ive seen thus far. It's just brilliantly efficient. I also used 6 AS pads too so i could try using less as well. The idea is to improve gas MPG and emissions for phase 1 and Ph.2 is to eliminate fuel as a primary source completely aside from initial start up and poss. Reserve but it gets complicated dealing with the engine management systems which lead me to discover a possible conspiracy with our O2 sensors.. Well anyway, thanks for the info. Good luck

Making Hydrogen gas and oxygen gas side by side? My first basic chemistry lesson taught me that both gases (H2 and O2) when mixed nothing will happen. But if there is an electric spark (catalyst) the result is a catastrophic explosive reaction making water. Also pure oxygen is extremely flammable. If in case our atmosphere is filled with 100% oxygen (hypothetical) life would not exist because everything around us will be burning constantly. May be in this video the quantity of gases made were small.

something you might consider to help the project , I need to adapt this type of stuff to my set of science arsenal equipment and a key point from what i had gathered from books is, I think you need to apply about 1.2 volts or so per cell set ( one + and one - plate) to keep water from getting hot , if you give a set of plates 12 volts (12v - 1.25 = 10.75 ) the 10.75 will be heating the water. so maybe try about 9 sets of plates in series for the 12 volts appied to circuit to see if it becomes more efficient ( less heating) , i need to try this for myself . if i would try 6 volts i would test with try 4 or 5 sets of series wired cell sets . whatcha think ? and thanks ! 📐📏✏👍😃📖📚📡🔬📉🔧🔩

One Question ? the Hydrogen Oxygen Generator you Created there Can it be utilised to where it can power up a Petrol Engine I Understand that One would need a Lot more Volume of water and sodium Hydroxide and also to Produce the Hydrogen; the Power would have to come From the 12 Volt Battery but once Powered up the Alternator could Be directly Powering up the Hydrogen. We In Britain are Now Being Taxed so Heavily on Petrol and Diesel that if we also venture out into the City; we have to pay a Tole Charge of about £50 per week But Of course Running a Car Basically on Water would Make things Better ; Since the 1930's This Process has Been Known But anyone that wanted to Patient such a devise The Oil Moguls either Bought the Patient to stop us From Having Cheaper Fuel; or if the Guy did not want to sell The Guy would end up Dead: We Had some Guy who was a Farmer that Invented a Car that ran on Methane which was from Chicken Shit and they Paid him not to Patient it; and then there was the Guy in England In the Early 60's that Invented a car that could do up to Five Hundred Miles on Vapour The Moguls Gave him Four Million Pounds for his invention: Looks to me that There are some Men out there who Have Come to the same conclusions as those that were inventors before Our time
@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 5 жыл бұрын
So it's very controversial. You can definitely run a petrol engine purely off of hydrogen gas. There is significant scientific evidence, however, that making hydrogen gas with the use of the alternator is not able to improve fuel mileage. There's actually significant evidence to show it makes it worse. This is because of the huge amounts of electricity to convert the water to 2H2 O2 gas. You could theoretically make the gas with say, solar panels or the electricity from your house and then store it like the way actual hydrogen cars do, but that would be complicated and expensive. Hope this helps!

You need to run less amperage through your system. To do that you will need to either decrease the voltage or decrease the concentration of your electrolyte. It will produce gas slower but it won’t overheat. You could try to make a heat exchanger using copper pipe (aluminum will react with sodium hydroxide) to remove the heat if your feeling ambitious. Your right, I could just make a water circulator but the fact that it was heating up sooo quickly whithout much gas production is prob do to the inefficiency of the system. Also NaOH reacts with aluminum so I would need to make my own radiator with copper or make some type of heat exchanger.

@@ARCSTREAMS NaOH is sodium hydroxide. It reacts with aluminum and ironically produces hydrogen gas in the process. And since most radiators are made with aluminum it wouldn't work. I plan on making a large dry cell generator that I will make a heat exchanger and that will allow me to use radiators to cool off the system. Adding more plates won't work because the gas is only being produced at the very bottom of the plates. It could also contaminate the gas because of the "floater plates" between the electrical sources would produce both oxygen and hydrogen. If you want to produce hydrogen seperated from oxygen gas efficiently you have to use whats called a PEM cell.

Dang it. I was going to make one of these. Had a feelin you'd get to it first. Great video. Do you have any clue how much chlorine gas the generator would produce when using salt as electrolyzer? Thought I read somewhere that the amount produced was small enough to be relatively safe... But i've no idea. Lol, slightly evil laughter, then: "that never gets old" 😅
@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure how much chlorine is produced but prob not much. Sodium hydroxide (to the best of my knowledge) doesn't produce any toxic gasses and can be found cheap on Amazon. My mom is already a nervous wreck when I make hydrogen gas so there is no reason I can't spend a couple bucks to skip the chlorine gas. Although, the fact that it's so basic it can give you some bad burns doesn't help. Another thing, if you use stainless steel and perform electrolysis with it, it becomes illegal to dump. So you could use platinum plated stuff but that is a bit out of my price range... Fill a 1gal milk jug with the mixed gas from and you'll rock the countryside. It's mostly loud though and hardly has any destructive force (can set off a water bottle in my hand) so my parents let me experiment with it. No excuse not to be careful though.
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 6 жыл бұрын
Illegal to dump eh? Huh, I kinda remember reading that before. The chromium must react with something. Interesting. Hold there, 'hardly any destructive force' ????? Yeah right. 🙄 The destructive force depends on the strength and materials you contain the explosion in. Loads of pressure from that kind of explosion. And the plastic will shred your hand if you do it wrong. Mythbusters proved it. 😀 (with dry ice bomb) Tell me you haven't let one off in your hand.... I'm quite positive if you stuck it in a metal container that you'd get a very nice bomb.
@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 6 жыл бұрын
The chromium is toxic or bad for the environment I think. I said a MILK JUG full of it has hardly any destructive force. I've filled a glass bottle with hydrogen, put it in a deep hole, and remotely ignited them and I just heard a "tick". The glass bottle was fine and actually pulled a vacuum (condensed into water). Pressurizing a vessel (which I would never do cause I like my hands attached to my body) with the gasses might do the trick but I'd be doubtful it'd do half what gunpowder could do. Plus, since hydrogen leaks easier than (most or any) other gasses, it would be extremely hard to hold any type of pressure not to mention the risk of it igniting while filling such a vessel. Not legal either I would assume. Water bottles with hydrogen are lots of fun and relatively safe (my opinion)(don't try this at home kids). I hold the cap of the bottle and wear gloves for sure. Ear protection is a must cause it's about as loud as a .410. Lit hundreds off that way. They are a good way to scare the crap out of someone.
@jakemakes
@jakemakes 6 жыл бұрын
S'pose i was reacting to the "hardly any destructive force" bit. Destructive force is relative, i suppose. I was told a story once about some people who made a hydrogen powered golf ball cannon. According to my sources, it sent them too deep into pine trees to pry out. Speaking personally, i'd call that some fairly serious destructive potential. The number of psi required to blow bottles up with that much force is pretty high. It would be quite interesting to find out exactly how much pressure is generated.
@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 6 жыл бұрын
A bottle blows at around 80 psi. I've tried to make a hydrogen gun but it proved difficult. The gas condenses into water before the projectiles could leave the barrel and sucked the projectile back into the gun with extreme force. That, as you can imagine would make it hard to read pressure without an expensive electronic one (like Mythbusters use). A bigger air chamber would've done the trick though I think. Also loading such a gun is a pain in the butt. I guess the way I use the gas is non-destructive. It could definitely be made into something destructive (heck, if I get the H2 atoms to fuse and I'm in business😂)

Hydrogen implodes when ignited... meaning it get smaller... (hydrogen takes up more space than steam) thus hydrogen actually works against the expansion of gasoline combustion. Recycling exhaust heat to boil water for steam expansion inside the combustion chamber is another story

@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 5 жыл бұрын
Online or at yer local metal depot. 316 stainless is the best easily obtainable/workable metal. Downside is that the water you use in the generator becomes illegal to dump (my understanding). Titanium is the best all around from what I’ve heard. Mild steel works for a while if you use sodium hydroxide as the electrolyte. Research it thoroughly though before you try anything and don’t hurt yourself 😁

With this kind of hydrogen generator it is almost impossible to fill a pressurized container (like an inner tube). 80 liters is a lot to store in one place so it would probably be dangerous. If you pressurize hydrogen and oxygen together in same container they can blow up. Hope I was able to answer your question!

Chromium gas you think!!! Chromium carbonyl. How the hell do you get any sort of chromium gas from electrolysis of water and NaOH
@HappyMadScientist
@HappyMadScientist 4 жыл бұрын
Chromium gas as in hexavalent chromium. It is produced as the stainless steel’s chromium (added to prevent rusting obviously) oxidizes. It’s the same thing that happens when you weld or or grind stainless. You can easily see the yellow color of the hexavalent chromium dissolved in the water.

@@HappyMadScientist gas you say???? Gas. Maybe welding would slightly vaporize chromium, but it would not stay in the air as a gas.
@HappyMadScientist

Maybe your right... I just assume some of it dissolves in the oxygen bubbles that oxidize it in the first place?
@sammyd7857
@sammyd7857 4 жыл бұрын
@@HappyMadScientist no it would combine with oxygen to turn into chromium oxide but it doesn't float around in bubbles. It will turn into dust if the electrolysis water spills on the ground. Same with welding, it would be like dust, but you will only get oxidation of the chrome if your gas flow is not high enough.

Yeah I’ve tried it. PVC isn’t the right material though unless you want to pick shrapnel out of yourself lol. I tried it using steel pipe but the problem is that when hydrogen burns it turns into water vapor which condenses very quickly creating a vacuum and violently sucking the projectile back into the chamber. To make it work you would have to get a pressure transducer and see when the pressure curve is negative and then start cutting off the barrel until the negative pressure goes away. It’ll be in a future video probably.

Does that help your thesis. Put some ear protection on and try it.

@nicgreen4234 4 жыл бұрын
James Lacey No, on at least two counts. One, Hydrogen doesn’t burn even at the novel pressure you suggest, a stoichiometric mix of Oxygen and Hydrogen at standard atmospheric pressure will readily explode however. And two, the pressure confined in a tube you describe would rise increasing the speed of combustion, which why it’s usually called a bomb. Take care.
