How do you separate a mixture of liquids? If they have different boiling points, you can use the process of distillation. Here, we'll see how to separate water, ether, and alcohol.

The time and effort you have used is not good for this video, its amazing. I have clearly understood how distillation works. Thankyou very Much!

@mizzchristine1 Great question! Yeah, you could also have a waste beaker, but I was just focusing on the basics here. So methanol boils at 65ºC, and water boils at 100ºC. That means that between 65ºC and 100ºC, if there is stuff dripping out, it's going to be a mixture of water and methanol, so that would go into your waste beaker. Does that make sense?

Thank you!!!! You just make chemistry looks easy. Just a question.. Why would you boil the water? If you have extracted methanol and ether.. Then, the last product in your flask should be water right? Can't you like pour it out? Also.. The residue on the pipe thing. Will it be a little contamination?

@korearepublicreddev first of all, you usually have to know the boiling points in advance, but that's pretty easy, because you can just look them up in a book or on the internet. second, and this is an important point, during the time that one liquid is boiling, the temperature stops going up and remains the same until all of it has boiled. so ether boils at 35ºC, and once the temperature hits 35ºC, it wouldn't go up more until all of the ether has boiled away. does that make sense?

Totally helped me understand what my lab chemistry exam was all about. By the way is distilled water safe to consume?
@randomplebian461
@randomplebian461 6 жыл бұрын
It has been 2 years already but I will reply that no, distilled water is NOT safe to consume. Basically, our blood has a specific solute potential and our RBCs have that too. It is imp. to maintain this solute potential, but distilled water does the opposite. Since it is pure, distilled water has no solute and will be hypotonic(more dilute) compared to our RBCs. So our RBCs will demand equality and seize some of that water for themselves, which can cause them to burst eventually. So no, distilled water is definitely not potable.

Wait but after you boil off the methanol and the ether don't you already have water left in the flask you originally started with or do we boil the water off in case there are any more impurities...

so how would you know what the boiling point range is? lets say water boils at 100 c but how do you determine the range. the temperature would keep going up so do you put the range when the liquid stops coming out?

I love your videos, but using "zillions" always throws me off. It implies we don't know or can't reach the magnification necessary. "Billions" would be more accurate and might give a better idea of the scale we're talking about! :)
