Great video. A real shame that SEPTA refuses to run those two trackless trolley lines. And a real shame that not a single one of those A. M. General trackless trolleys was saved. Especially one of the wheelchair lift equipped coaches that sat unused, inside of Southern Depot for twenty years, with almost no mileage on them. They were disliked by SEPTA management and maintenance people, so they were virtually brand new coaches when they were sold for scrap. My days of saving coaches was over

They were essentially lemons from the start as well

I loved when route 79 was a trackless trolley or a "trolley-bus" as we called them. Too bad SEPTA was too cheap to return them back to routes 29 and 79. They only restored routes 59, 66, 75. What a shame that South Philly had to suffer the loss :(

I'm hearing trackless trolleys on those routes might be making a comeback soon.
@dysontyronetd4 жыл бұрын
@@lorumipsum1129 it's not. They already took all the wires down and a few poles for it. I was upset and pissed off that they never trying to fix the wires and restore them.

@@lorumipsum1129 but instead, the decided to use electric buses for routes 29 and 79

Yup... METRO in Seattle had these, too. Only difference is the rear doors (as well as the window adjacent to the rear doors), and retrofitted wheelchair lifts.

Last time I rode one of these was in May 2000. Nice & quiet, no pollution. I miss them electric buses. What was the building in the far background at timecode 2:15? I think it is now Dubin Paper or S&S Wholesale.

The 79 was a highlight of my visit to Philadelphia in August 2000. I rode it in conjunction with dinner at the Melrose Diner. Sadly, the 29 was not running during my visit but I did check out the wires. There was some concern about visiting the area but I didn't feel unsafe although kept my camera equipment concealed. I've ridden on one of these buses back in 1999 up until 2002 because they've taken this model out of service a few years ago & were replaced with buses & then this is when they reissued the Trackless Trolleybuses because the newer models can work 2 ways.

nice footage of our old general coaches! Brings back memories from the late 1990s when I would see them in south Philly. im guessing 5:15 the operator was struggling to put the poles on the energizers
@RRansomSmith7 жыл бұрын
E. Marquise Sanders wire tension was shit and as soon as the rope was released, the wire moved and the pole dewired. luckily operator was still holding the rope or the pole would fly up and hit the wire and risk breaking it.

WHAT? This guy had me and others in tears..Then..I retire EARLY and years later WHO do i run into BUT yeah this guy he is STILL Driving a BUS but tells me he is LEGALLY BLIND now and is doing it from memory..WHAT?

I never understood why Septa opted for these but not their diesel versions As the AMG Metropolitan/ New Fyer D/E 800s were great buses. They would have outlasted those generation 1 GmC RTS's I know that much.
@blue9multimediagroup4 жыл бұрын
No they wouldn't have. They had just as many issues. Plus, there's this thing called lowest bidder and as I recall, AMG didn't bid on any bus orders.

Why are the front doors like normal bus dorrs but the back doors are trolley style doors..is it just for design or some other purpose?

Routes 29 & 79 are discontinued, they even took the overhead wires out. One thing, how dare Septa to not to put the back with track-less trolleys. And I hate these downgraded bus too much
