Taken at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, a SEPTA Bombardier coach and a New Jersey Transit Bombardier Multilevel Coach give us a light and a bell show at Amtrak's Train Day!!! Pneumatic Bell vs Electronic Bell (E-Bell)

SEPTA takes the cake for this one. NJ Transit has a common E Bell which sounds pretty annoying especially as a railfan who hears them all the time. Not to mention that the old bronze bells are being phased out and slowly becoming extinct

i agree. NOTHING beats a mechanical bell. especially a *BRONZE* bell. hell, even a BRASS bell is nice, too, like what's found on the GG1 and old Steam Locomotives. not those stupid "Ekyrail" Salvation Army Bells. even the Graham Whites get annoying.

@JaeCRK North American requirement. they were to be equipped with bells and "American Style" horns. the demo sets, like the X2000 and ICE, even the IC3 i think it was called, were retrofitted with horns and bells for the same reasons.

After breaking it all down, I can say that the clear winner here is SEPTA. SEPTA 2403 is an iconic Cab Car with an classic, and rather rare bell. While I hate common Steel Bells, other, older Mechanical Bells like this one I really love, and wish were more common. I like the SEPTA Paint Scheme on them too. There's not really much else to say. I really like Comets. NJT 7054 is a less iconic Cab Car, with a good, but not very original bell. I like E-Bells and all, but in the big picture, they aren't really that interesting or unique. Considering Bombardier Multilevels are supposed to be Comets fused with Bombardier Bi-Levels, it's a shame they didn't inherit one of the greatest features of their Jesus-Like Cousins, the bell being mounted on the roof, which would make them much clearer and more effective. Maybe if 7054 did have a roof-mounted bell, I would choose it to win, since high-mount E-Bells sound incredible.

i agree, but the bell is made for safety reasons, and when used correctly, takes the cake. but thats beside the point. i agree, if the e-bell was mounted on top like the MBTA kawasaki units, it would not only be louder (safety) and sound much better 👍🏼
