Happy birthday Katrina. The look of absolute love on your hubby's face every time he looks at you is priceless. Those apples looked pretty huge so will make pretty good filling for apple crumble. As it's coming into the Southern hemisphere's spring here I'm going to get myself organised and plant some potatoes. As I don't have a glasshouse It's still a bit early and a bit cool in the mornings to plant tomatoes, sweet capsicums, corn & cucumber. But I say this every year...I'm the least organised person I know!

Happy birthday Katrina. Zone 5B - 1 cosmos plant and tons of blooms... Agree, it is a Comos Year. About veggies - Pumpkins and Zuccinies all over the place and trendy recipe: marinated pumpkin cubes in pineapple juice. But, not so good year for beans.

Happy birthday! How lovely to pick a bouquet of your wedding flowers on your birthday, how special is that? I love the wilderness of your allotment the insects need that this year let's hope there are lots of insects hibernating ready for next year. Our apple tree has had a magnificent crop and my husband is making Apple and ginger jam with them. A beautiful jam in colour and taste. I'll have to get him that apple picker, what a birthday treat for him.

We struggled with the drought and high temperature the whole summer in South of Romania, but September changed a bit and we have some cucumbers aand chillies to harvest. I just discovered your channel and your allotment is superb. I have gardened for 50 years and only have a small West Yorkshire garden so I grow dwarf apple trees (James Grieve) which yield full size apples and plenty of them. I feed hungry squirrels, along with the birds, and they all leave my produce alone. They never touch it. I seem to have a solitary rat (I like rodents) which lives somewhere near and in the compost heap, and it causes no trouble. I live in a neighbourhood of cats which also cause no trouble. What does cause trouble is the vine weevil beetle and its ravenous offspring. I think nematodes have won that battle as I have seen no damage this year. Fingers Xd. May your allotment forever be vine weevil free. 🙂 PS I grow the Mignon variety of dahlias as the centres are magnets for pollinators.

Slightly tart apples are the best for cooking. You can always add a sweetener, ice cream, cream or custard, if you want. We had these cooking apples in England, don't know what variety, that were really tart. We cut them into wedges and dipped them in sugar to eat. Just looking on the internet and they were probably Bramley.
