When it come to sista Soulja , I don’t think she’ll ever capture the essence of The Coldest Winter Ever again, I think she had succumb to the pressure from the fans wanting to continue Winter’s story when she’s not in the place anymore to connect with that type of writing, I’ve read A Deeper Love and the Midnight series, and those books were great because the writing was so different, it’s a story she wanted to tell, she doesn’t want to tell Winters story, which is why she can’t make the story and the reader connect, I believe she doesn’t even understand who Winter is, I think she has a concept (lol) and she’s trying to figure it out as she writes the books.
@carolsimpson44222 ай бұрын
I think she changed tracks very deliberately. She saw that people were glorifying winter, when Souljah meant for TCWE to show a seriously damaged and flawed individual, and how a sick society twists minds and causes people to act against their own best interests,. She intended a message opposite from what many young people took from it.
@MsMalcolmHughes2 ай бұрын
I definitely agree, especially about those other books. It feels as if she dislikes Winter. So, yeah, she should release the character from any future books.
@carolsimpson44222 ай бұрын
@@MsMalcolmHughes I felt like she disliked Winter in the first book, and has become much kinder to her, allowing her room to begin to grow into a decent human being. Souljah does judge women like Winter harshly, according to her religious beliefs, and her own political awareness, but seems increasingly willing to attribute a moral conscience to Winter. The first book Winter was just so empty headed, thinking of nothing but money and status. Now she cares about people, has some discernment in choosing associates, and can admit when she's made a bad decision.
@MsMalcolmHughes2 ай бұрын
@@carolsimpson4422 I would’ve agreed with you before reading this book. I feel like Winter’s character was static, and even regressed here from any progress made in LAD.

@@MsMalcolmHughes but look how sweet she is to Porsche. She is truly humble in the face of Porsche s generosity of spirit. And her affection and grudging respect for Immanuel, and how she is always reminding herself- that's my sister's man, don't get ideas lol I thought it was realistic ,the way she wasn't suddenly a different person after her NDE, but sometimes slipping back, and then having to remember, hey! I know better now.

Love After Midnight was horrible! Albeit, not worst than the previous book in this series but I had high hopes for this story and was extremely let down. There are so many questions left unanswered regarding Pretty, Santiaga, Midnight (the title makes you think he’s relevant to the story) and her original crew/friends. Too many unfinished stories. It was chaotic and a total mess! I agree with your review and rating

I agree with you on Love After Midnight. I was sooooo hoping it would turn out to be a step up from Life After Death. I have the audio book. And to me the writing is all over the place and it’s a struggle to follow. And I think she made a huge mistake by trying to narrate the book herself. She doesn’t have a good narration voice so that doesn’t make it any better. My opinion of course but it’s highly disappointing. 🤷🏿♂️😐

I own the Davenport. I am intrigued by the book, especially after listening to your review of it. Oh, it sucks that love after Midnight wasn't that good. Too bad! Also, I like the way you are rating the book. I am also revisiting my own rating system and yours has encouraged me to do it differently. Thanks!
@MsMalcolmHughes2 ай бұрын
Definitely give the Davenports a chance. It does suck about LAM, but 🤷. As for the rating system, I'm glad you're reconsidering. When I first started I used to do a lettered grading scale, but a few years back that stopped sitting well with me so I transitioned to this, which I find I quite enjoy. It still captures how I feel about the books, while being kind.

I have to ask you about the controversial question that is out there. Ms. Hughes, do you believe that Sister Souljah actually wrote, "Coldest Winter Ever"? None of her subsequent books are on the same plane as her breakout novel.
@MsMalcolmHughesАй бұрын
Is that a real theory that's circulating? That's horrible. There is no reason for us to believe that she didn't write it. I would say that every book she has written, except forLife After Death and Love After Midnight, has been quality.

I just finished Love After Midnight and I STRUGGLED to finish this book so bad because I didn’t understand what the heck was going on and unfortunately that feeling never changed. I remained confused the WHOLE time….and I still don’t know what the focal point of this book was and the ending was just as confusing. It didn’t even feel like an ending, it felt like it was leading into another chapter. As much as I hate to say it I hope this is the end of Winter’s story because it’s been tainted and destroyed at this point…I’m OVER IT…lol

If you are published by a major publisher, your work is crtitiqued and edited by a lot of people before a cover gets slapped on. You mean to tell me that not one of the people who read this book before it was published saw that it was garbage?
@PeteMcCorveyАй бұрын
The rumor has been for years that Sister Souljah didn't pen The Coldest Winter Ever for years and I'm really starting to believe that. Every book she has written after TCWE is just nothing but long drawn out descriptions of designer clothes, cars, scenery , materialistic things and Islamic doctrine. I had to put down Midnight because he was dogging black American culture to the point it became annoying. Plus Winter didn't seem to learn anything from her near death experience with her journey between Hell and Purgatory.
