Every time I hear one of these I'm reminded of Mannheim Steamroller, who used this instrument extensively on his "Christmas" album, even sampling it into a Fairlight.

@koolstup It did, nearly all of the synth sounds on the soundtrack are a prophet 5, also used on Assault on precinct 13 (original), The Thing, Halloween Part 3 extensively and others.

Early digital shimmers, modern digital sparkles, but this positively glows! They've tried to emulate the sound of a vintage synth but nothing comes close to the original.

@Musiccandy It wouldnt surprise me. I can hear certain simularities in the sonic palette of each classic. I own a DX7S the second generation. Where it improves on the MK1 model is the poly unision mode which makes it able to produce big fat sounds like a prophet 5 or any classic analogue. It also have this incredible percussive attack which makes the DX7 MK2 the best drum synth I have ever heard. It can produce fantastic sounds that go beyond samplers and drum machines. and it can sound analogue

I thought that Yamaha brought the Sequential guys in to make the SY22 with the vector synthesis technology from the Prophet VS after Sequential fell. Sequential was still alive and well in 1983 when (or should I say before?) the original DX7 came out.

@cprostudio. Dont blame commercial music exploitation on digital synths. My Yamaha DX7 MK2 is digital and can produce as much expression and emotion as any synth ever made. It s the people who make the music not the instrument. Analogue synths are cool and great for certain sounds. But I wouldnt pay the asking price for a prophet 5 or jupiter 8. When I can get even more sonic power from my DX7 MK2. And not have to worry about it dying or going out of tune when it feels like it.

@peterkadar I think digital is just as good as analogue in terms of synth sounds. After a long while listening to analogue you get tired of its limitations, then you start to realise just how good digital is.

I agree wholeheartedly. I am still using 2 DX7 MK1's ( w/ E! chip) with Alesis Quadraverbs hooked up to each one, and there ain't a sound out there I can't make or beat. I've been considering adding a TX816 with multiple Qverbs, too, but it would be lots of work to make it do everything, and I would have to become more of a music programmer than a music player, and I have grown lazy in my old age. Oh, yeah. Didja know that the DX7 was developed by some guys who used to work for Prophet?

but the voyager isn't a minimoog copy. it says minimoog on the front, sure, but the entire thing is redesigned; different features and character - it's smoother and more polite than model D; it can't go BOOM or scream quite like the mini D can, either...but it can do many sounds that the mini D can't.

@cprostudio I think you need to get a grip. Digital is just as important as analogue in the synth world and modern day synths blow away the older stuff in terms of complexity. Not knocking analogue, it has its place but stop exageratting their capabilities.

@cprostudio A good artist can make good 'honest' music from anything. I don't give a rats ass whether Stevie Wonder is using a real or digital rhodes or clavinet, the fact is musicians like him know how to use the technology and nobody would notice that it isn't analogue or acoustic as long as the music is good.
