Digitally CONTROLLED analog filters. DCO's are analog. Think of it like your cars engine. In the late 1970's the mechanical rotating distributor went away in favor of a computer controlled module. But you didn't suddenly have an electric car, you still had a V8 gas combustion engine, it was just more accurately controlled by a computer module.

I already had the original Pro One, Mopho, Pro 2, Pro 3 SE, Prophet 12, and recently sold a Rev2 and now I had to order this as well. Sequential is killing the competition with the sound and build quality of their synths

Looks like a very interesting synth for those who prefer a one-size-fits-all or room only for 1 synth situation, then this might be a very good option if analog is important. If analog isn't all that important, the Korg Kronos-88 keys, for example, has some very great grand piano sounds with RH3 Graded Hammer Action at the same price point. It also has 9 synth engines with far more sonic options and features with a large touch screen that can be played like a mini keyboard. As another example, an OB-6 with a digital 77 or 88 keys piano could also provide some very interesting accompaniments. These are only a few of the options available in the same price range or slightly more if money isn't an issue. Although I wouldn't mind owning a Prophet X (I own the Prophet Rev2-16 and several other analog and digital synths) it seems to reside in the realm of niche musical instruments that try to be a Jack of All Trades but master of none.

It's done. I'm SOLD!! This synth is on another level.... as usual with Dave's gear. Been looking for a ultra clean Poly Evolver for months now and haven't been able to find one. Only mono evolvers. I think I'm over my search now since I found the X. Onto the BIG STUFF w/ my new Prophet X !!

Can someone confirm - does this really only have 8 voice (stereo) polyphony? They are demoing piano sounds on an instrument that cannot be played with sostenuto? 8 voice will run out in no time playing piano.

Agreed.. while I appreciate what can be done with this instrument, it does seem foolish to focus on the samples of 40 pianos.. none of which can be played like a piano with this polyphony limit

Hi, Machi. I think the 8 voice polyphony will be a big problem. Imagine trying to play piano & string patches with only 8 notes of polyphony?? "voice stealing" will be inevitable & constant. 😖

This synth could have been great if it combined something like 8 voice analog oscillators&filters with at least 128 voices of digital oscillators. That could with the large sample library have made a killer synth. But as it is, I feel the analog filters limiting it to 8-voice stereo is indeed a bottleneck.

Synths have always had limited polyphony. All famous synth hits have been made with 5 to 8 voice instruments. If you want to play sustained arpeggios, buy a digital piano!

owning a Prophet REV 2 16 Voice, an OB6 , AND a Jupiter-80, I really can't justify in my situation that I need this instrument. I love DSI products (clearly) and I am a major old school fan of analog synths--that said, I only have room for 3 full synths and I can't see myself selling one of these iconic instruments I own for this.

Hi, thanks for your interest! The Prophet X is polyphonic up to 16 mono voices (or 8 stereo). I would agree that this is limited compared to most digital workstation keyboards, but it’s quite a lot for a synth with an individual analog filter for each voice. Especially not when they have only 8/16 (stereo/mono) note polyphony. 150GB ROM/50GB RAM is very impressive for a hardware synth, and it would be great for live performances. But the low polyphony will be very very limiting, especially when playing piano & string patches.

It is surely really important to notice this is not a sampler. It is a synth that uses samples, among other sources, as oscillators (so you can use any sample as a modulator in FM and AM, for instance), all sent through analog filters like the earlier Dave Smith sample playing keyboards in order to make a sound you might play.

@@MrStupidHead Naw bro. I think the keyboard is a masterpiece as well, but that's because of the 8DIO sampling. This keyboard has great synth architecture, but the 8DIO samples alone sound amazing. Check some videos where the presenter shows the sample library without talking so much...

-16 bit 48khz. Samples, what a joke... I want 24 bit 192khz at that price, not wonder it sounds so thin. People that work on scoring know that at those sampling rates you can't sound convincing specially on strings and deep pads, don't get me started on Brass and Woodwinds. Spitfire Audio can give them a run for their money with Kontakt -Also 1024 Presets 512 for user only. This should have at lease 10 000 presets? This is not a pro feature. They keep thinking like is 1981. Not pro features at this price is a sacrilege, The joke is on you if you drink this Coolaid

In the mastering stage, wouldn’t that extra sampling fidelity be lost in compression? I usually bounce my projects for CD and streaming at 44.1khz.
