So pleased that Carol mentioned hand sewing - I often will hand sew as I find that I have no real control when machine sewing. Thanks for all the wonderful tips - I'm not actual thinking of a sequin garment but I am going to try to make a little zipped sequin pouch.

Hello! I'm in the US and have been dying to watch the Bee for years and through some maneuvering have finally gotten access to Season 10. Sadly, I am underwhelmed for all the rreaasons you both point out. I thought I'd get to see some actuual sewing but really only see the sewers rush and produce partially or poorly finished garments as a result. On the other hand, I LOVE All Gathered Up. I love seeing Carol tackle tailoring and couterier sewing on difficult fabrics in such a calm, knowledgable and considered way. Your show totally makes up for what I miss in the Bee. Thank you both, Stuart, you are a great 'emcee' and your technology makes learning frrom Carol's demos possible. I look forward to taking whatever courses you offer in the future. Thank you again. Ilse

This is music to the ear, thank you. Imagine where we would be if limited to what tv producers wanted us to see. In this case, social media has given us the chance to challenge the entertainment programme and offer a deeper dive into the techniques that really help build a life skill.

Hi, How much I love every one of All Gathered Up episodes. You mentioned gussets in Ganseys. That is my only experience of incorporating gussets in a garment. I knitted a gansey a couple of years ago 5ply yarn. I must send you a pic of it sometime. I think the real value of a gusset is to give room for movement where needed but allows the rest of the garment to remain close fitting. Exactly what the fishermen needed. BTW my two chickens (Moldova and Ethiopia) will be in the post tomorrow, I hope you can keep some room for them in your display. 😂

I agree with Carol's comments about candidate selection. In particular why is there only ever one woman in tbe age range 50 to 70? Too experienced for them or do they just not apply? I love these videos, probably more than the actual programme. Anyone embarking on sewing would find these tips very useful and inspiring. With a chain stitch it will easily unravel if pulled from one end and not so much from the other. I dont think they use overlockers to their full potential either. I would have overlocked the collar, cuffs and bottom band on - avoiding the sequins with the knife of course. I hate the bunfight for grabbing fabrics. Very unfair on less pushy candidates, I am thinking of the old guy here, forget his name. With ribbing necks I find a good starting point is to measure the seam line on the garment then use the following measurements (plus seam allowances) when cutting the band for the neck: Stretchy ribbing or viscose 75-80% Cotton jersey 85%. Mark the quarter points on the top and the band and match up. I make a lot of T shirts!

I agree about overlockers being the right tools for some jobs. Also imagine how much easier Alex's topstitching would have been if she'd used a coverstitcher with the decorative top cover option. It might even have got on top of the dreaded velvet. I'm also not a fan of the bunfight for grabbing fabrics. Even if there are enough viable options to go around, it's unseemly!

And in the case of my sequin fabric, the chain was in two directions. I chose the wrong one, oops!

Totally agree on the candidate selection. My friends constantly ask why I haven't applied but whats the point, I doubt they would pick a middle aged woman who has sewn all her life so far. I know a few women like me who have applied but not been selected, shock horror. Too much ticking of boxes

Always learn so much from you Carol. Love it! Time is still to short for challenges. I do think that hand stitching is seen as very much a secondary skill in the sewing bee and actually it's a primary skill. You don't have to have a sewing machine to start sewing. Still enjoying the bee though. ❤🧵🪡 more power to you needle and thread guys x

Hand sewing can actually save time! Firstly, for setting up and getting the technique precise and in another way to tame a tricky fabric. A long backstitch with waxed, strong thread makes for a long life seam and with a bit of 'give'.

They gave the sewers Sequinned fabric for the pattern challenge and guess what job Carol had in her workroom this week..... SEQUINNED FABRIC!! Amazing timing. Carol explains to us how she altered the length of the sequinned dress and dealt with this tricky fabric and also talks ribbing and ratios!

I have never sewn with sequined fabric before. I have sewn with them. I have a jean jacket in the works I am planning to bead the neckline. I have a dress to finish first which has an overlay of chiffon. It is proving to be challenging good thing I have more than 3 hours to complete it.😅

Sewing Bee are very focused on waste - reuse, recycle. Could we encourage ideas here for ways of using scraps? Recent examples for me: Ipad cover (it has a padded interlining and pockets for Iphone and spectacles - so much better than nasty plastic ones); sleeping mats for cats (also padded); altar cloth for my Zen group ( small cloth from off-cut of a fine Japanese silk); ironing cushions - I swear by them and have several of different dimensions.

It's interesting that sequins are attached with a chain stitch. I'd never thought to wonder about that! Chain stitch is directional -- as seen in the closures of large bags of potatoes -- so maybe the off-cut needed to have a thread snipped at the bottom and unravelled toward the top? Are sequins brittle? Do hammers really work for breaking them away, or might a toenail clipper be more effective? In the pattern challenge, what happened to the ends of the bottom ribbing where it met the zip? Would there have been a raw edge? For neckband sizing, maybe maths can help? If you have a 2.5cm difference in radius between two circles, you'll have a 2 * pi * 2.5cm difference in circumference. And neckbands are kind of circular. So, if the visible neckband is 2.5cm wide, the ribbing would need to be about 16cm shorter than the line where it's stitched on, so that its folded edge has the right length. There we are. Potatoes, toenails, and pi!

Very good point here - you could make a god sized seam allowance, mark your seam line and use a smaller clipper to snip out the sequins or beads that are in the way of the needle.

I am amazed by how inexperienced some of them are. Why worry about buttons or zips, surely these are basic skills that are required. Don't start me on the times, it is getting so frustrating not seeing so few finished items.

Yes, agree, and how useful are the garments that are so hurriedly finished? It will take some time, but I hope the contestants will unpick and remake their work with careful attention and in a relaxed environment.
