Fashion historian Nicole Rudolph has a good video on "Why Gendered Buttons?" and debunking the various myths (not just Stuart's idea about horses and swords, but also Tig's idea about maids doing the buttoning). She's done a lot of research, has seen many extant garments, portraiture, as well as looked at print sources in order to figure this out. It's worth checking out on her channel. I was sorry to see Marcus go. I imagine unless someone else really screws up next week, Suzy will be gone next (I've been thinking she was on the edge of leaving for weeks, though, so who knows?)

Well - there we have it. The Knockout rounds are done and we're at the Quarter Finals next week! Where did those 7 weeks go? Let us know who you are excited to see in the final 3. I've finally been inspired myself and I've got out some gingham and I'm making another shirt. I'll be talking about it with Carol on tomorrow's AGU as I need to adapt my pattern due to going to the gym!

Thankyou again for your thoughts … it was so nice and refreshing to watch a ‘sewing programme’ this week . The timings felt a bit more realistic and the quality of the sewing improved . I think Suzie saved herself this week and I think it’ll be her or Ailsa who are next to leave . I would like to see pascha , Alex and Luke in the final

This was one of the more interesting episodes this season--I think because more things were finished. I really liked Marcus' really out of the box thinking--maybe if he'd added a cape to his superhero outfit it would have worked better. I also admire Suzy's consistent aesthetic. I think Pasha and Alex are in the final and then it just a matter of who is consistent enough to get in there with them. Personally, I'm rooting for Ailsa, I find her designs unusual and interesting.

I agree Ting that Suzies colour combo with the made to measure was jarring , but so was Patrick's shirt and pants combo, that really disturbed my equilibrium. I thought Marcus was lovely and his transformation was very humorous. I'm thinking it's between Alex and Pascha .

Thank you for your discussion!!! Always really interesting! I think all of them are utterly fantastic! I think Ailsa has an incredible talent, I love Suzy's style and how she approaches everything - absolutely love her outfits - think Luke and Pascha are great - obviously Alex excellent at sewing. I do not think it is clear yet about the final 3 maybe there are 2 that are more likely to get through.

Thanks again for the ‘unpicking’. Apart from all the other criticisms of this series I think even the prepared garments aren’t always displayed to their best. I get the impression whoever has dressed the mannequin hasn’t taken that much care. In the made to measure challenge although I liked the design of Pasha’s dress it did look like she could have popped out if she’d have attempted any vigorous movement, certainly no Pogo dancing (see series 5 ep 3 to see Patrick’s and Esme’s demo! 😜)

Yes, the GotW had some issues that the judges didn't mention, although it still deserved to be GotW. The cups seemed so low that they may only have been covering without supporting, the topmost lace arches were different distances from the top edge, and some of the boning was digging into the model's back at the top.

Alex's dress was great 👍🏻 🧵🪡 Suzies idea was good but the balance was wrong. Skirt had to be without the frill or one much bigger and fuller and it could have looked great 🧵🪡

I've made that Ornella dress that Luke made, and the pattern was quite tricky to get the bust cups to look reasonable in that stand-up part. I just think he didn't do a good job on the pleats, and he hadn't pressed it throughout so it looked unpolished.

Have Amber talk for most of the show and switch back to the contestants to look at their finished, or half finished, garments so we can avoid all the stress of watching them sew. Pascha, Alex and would love to see Ailsa if she can up her game for the pattern challenge in the final.

I really enjoyed this week. But I have a question for other sewists out there: Has anyone ever managed to get a good button-hole with the automatic button-hole foot/setting on a modern machine? Personally, I've never managed to get it to work properly and it seems the contestants struggle with it too. It's always a shame when they get marked down on the finished garments because of mangled button-holes. I now use a vintage machine and have learned to do button-holes manually on it. The finish is so much better and there is not a great deal of time difference in doing it this way.
@denisem9407
@denisem9407 24 күн бұрын
I find it very tough to do great automatic buttonholes but my Bernina seems to do a better job. My Viking uses that stupid wheel that gets caught or slips off the fabric when I'm putting in placket buttonholes. Am expert at picking them out.
@tomscrafts
@tomscrafts 24 күн бұрын
I'm a recent convert to doing them manually, on either my vintage machine or my modern-ish machine. The time difference only comes from chalk-marking the whole H-shaped target area and doing one 180-degree pivot, right? The thing that bothered me about the automatic method is that there's some mechanical slop in the sliding part of the foot. It's free to jiggle from side to side by a thread's width and turn by a degree or two. I got into the habit of using a non-scratchy part of my seam ripper to press the sliding part against the non-sliding part. This reduced the slop, but I didn't like doing it.
@charlenebillins1296
@charlenebillins1296 23 күн бұрын
@tomscrafts I find the time difference is really minimal, especially since I've had a lot more practice at it. It may even be a bit quicker without having to carefully rip out poorly done stitching from the automatic button hole 😆 I agree, the button hole foot on my newer machine feels very flimsy and wobbles around. The only benefit is being able to put the button in the back and have it make the hole the correct size.

My Babylock Symphony makes beautiful buttonholes. Yes, sometimes it struggles with heavy things, like a woolen winter coat, but a bit of tissue underneath fixes that. Plus I can choose different buttonhole shapes, control stitch density, etc.

I think this week’s show was the best in the series so far. Alex and Pascha are emerging as real contenders. I predict them plus Luke in the final. Ailsa had a problem in the made to measure in week 1 when she also didn’t manage to attach the top of her dress to the bottom so she’s a little erratic but I think she’ll get to the semi final with Suzie going out next week. We’ll see. Suzie definitely did better this week and it was the first time all series where I thought she didn’t deserve to go home! Once again I’m surprised no slippers were thrown- Ting, are you suffering from apathy?

Well, swings and roundabouts... If they'd sent Suzy home in week 1 instead of giving her GotW, I'd've been sad, but at least there would've been an encore appearance by Terry Pastry to console me. 😉

Over all it was an interesting week. The pyjama blouse was not easy regarding pinping on slippery fabrics. I myself wouln´t have any idea to come up with in the second round. I liked most of the made to measure garments. Aisas dress was very inspireing. Paschas was beautiful, although the front was to a bit too short and that pulls on the upper line (locking from the side you see the waist rising in the front) , but there I am nitpicking. No slippers this week - I am a bit relieved and look forward to the next episode ...

This series feels like the opposite of series 7. Most of the series 7 contestants were highly focused on the task in hand, leaving Cathryn and Damien to provide a lot of the best on-screen conversations with the host. In series 10, we're blessed with a great set of conversationalists, but perhaps at the expense of a bit of focus. In saying that, I suppose I'm echoing something Patrick said in his recent interview with Kate from The Fold Line. Now, wearing my analysis bandit hat... Pascha and Alex were clearly the top contenders in lingerie week. All three challenges were close calls between them. But different weeks' themes play to the strengths of different sewers. If lingerie week had been before children's week, Georgie might've outlasted Marcus. Or, if the order of weeks 7 and 8 had been swapped, Marcus might not have been there in lingerie week to shield Ailsa, and it might've been her kryptonite, despite how brilliantly she's done on some other themes. I find it hard to predict which future weeks will play to which sewers' strengths, especially after the shock elimination of Peter in series 6's RRR week. So, looking only at their results so far, I rate Pascha 1st, Alex a close 2nd, Ailsa 3rd, Luke a close 4th, and Suzy a close 5th.

Ailsa and Luke are too hit and miss to bank on. Suzy is definitely a goner unless she can keep the skills of the last mtm. The judges don't seem to like Luke's choices. I believe it's Pascha vs Alex. I think there's no one to particularly root for, but Luke is the closest for me personality and creativity wise. Pascha and Alex have the best skill. Ailsa is liked by the judges because she is more creative and conceptual in her choices. Pretty sure there were tons of issues with the pyjama tops like disappearing piping, dodgy buttons and mismatched hems.

Enjoyed this weeks show. I think the contestants seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot more or maybe we were just getting to see that side more. More time spent with each one. Sorry to mention timings again, but I don't think we have literally had enough time to connect with the contestants this year. 1 advantage is the result is not a foregone conclusion from week 3 of the show. But 2 disadvantages are, here we are at week 8 and few have a clear favourite and a clear lack of engagement with any of the contestants. My predicted finalists are Alex, Pascha and Ailsa. Pascha to win, because I think she is the most consistent so far.
