Then they get stirred up by a human Queen who was also tortured and experimented on and decide that ALL of humanity should be annihilated due to Hitler and Goebbel's actions. I know the popular perception of Gears is a meathead fantasy of violence and mayhem but the story of the first three games is actually very well done and surprisingly emotionally engaging for a game where the protagonists are built like fucking dump trucks pushing 400lbs of pure muscle and testosterone. They really nail the apocalyptic and desperate tone very well, especially in the second game where even the cover art shows the uber badass protagonist mourning. Hell, this emotional journey is even reflected on the cover art on that note; the first game Marcus looks almost confident in a "lets do this" mood despite the raging inferno behind him, Gears 2 shows the fires subsiding but Marcus looks forlorn, as if the war itself is advancing to an end but he's lost so much, and in Gears 3 he looks extremely angry yet the background is the brightest it's been, showing that the war is ending but he's tired of it all. There's so much of that in these games, it brings so much more than the cover shooter influences it laid upon the industry, it brought emotional storytelling and empathy through the lens of meatheads that stereotypically do not have these feelings or arcs. Then 4 and 5 fuck it all up

Completely agree. This is a case of more than meets the eye. Gears 1 was definetly all the stereotypes associated with the series: Muscle men, violence, witty banter, bleak setting, but no depth to any of the characters or world. Gears 2 shocked fans of the first game by luring you into thinking it was gonna be like the first, with the opening act having a similar tone to the first game. But then once you get into the Hollow, things get much bleaker. Then there's the Tai scene, which came out of nowhere and was brutal. Then there was Dom's disagreements on which is the priority: Maria or the operation. Then there was the Maria scene, which... whew, really fucks you up. It completely subverted expectations by delivering an immensely dark, shocking, and thought provoking story. Gears 3 took all that and fleshed it out even more, with more realistic characters, and a more engaging plot. Then 4 and 5 are basically just Marvel movies disguised as "gritty" sci-fi shooters. Don't get me wrong, there's some great moments in this new saga, such as the return to New Hope, and the ending to Gears 4, but it's nothing compared to the original trilogy.

@@BananaBrainsZEF Kait's story is incredible, she wants to help humanity but it is divided between her "Locust" side and her human side, she kills her own uncle, unintentionally, and is used to revive the queen. Gears 5 is about discovering the origin of Myrrah's lineage, why Kait is having those visions, and when she finds out, the game becomes about defeating the Swarms, it's a story of overcoming, of fighting your evil side. I LOVE Gears 1, but when it comes to the story 5 is much better, in the first game Marcus is ordered to turn on the resonator in the Locusts tunnels and the whole game is about the difficulties on this journey, but there is nothing personal about this journey, Marcus doesn't need to overcome anything, at the beginning of the game we got out of prison (The Slab) and Hoffman treats ut badly the first time we see him, but this is the only time that this plot is mentioned, Marcus doesn't need to overcome the time that he stayed in prison or recover his reputation, the plot of Gears 1 is so poor that it doesn't even explain why Marcus was in prison, this is only explained in Gears 3 (in game). Gears 1 is a game about fulfilling ONE mission, but the mission has many setbacks. Neither emotion does this game have, Kim's death doesn't affect us much because we had just met him, while Gears 5 has the death of Oscar, Del and Jack, characters that we had know "for a long time". I would even argue that Lizzie's death is more impactful than Kim's, and i'm not even going to talk about Anthony "WHO?" Carmine. Gears 1 is great, but it doesn't have a very good story, it has great characters, atmosphere and level design, but it manages to be worse than Gears 5 in many ways, and it comes from someone who loves the first game. People underestimate Gears 5, but the truth is that you can't understand 100 percent of the original trilogy without playing it, it's an incredible and indispensable game. But i agree, Gears of War 4 sucks.

Weird. I thought Sera was a colony world that, as it had developed, had gone through all those various wars. And that the Locust were from the first colonist-miners who had basically been betrayed by those who'd brought them to Sera, and had sheltered in the Hollow while the nations above forgot all about them in their in-fighting. That the reason they were nigh-mythical was that they had deliberately hidden themselves so they could build their armies to fight back against the humanity that had abandoned their forefathers in the abyss.

I believe it was originally presented as a colony, but that changed to being the homeworld of humans (in an alternate history sense). The Locusts were the result of an experiment done to the children of imulsion miners who were suffering from rustlung to find a cure. Instead the Locusts were created, and the Locust Queen (a human naturally immune to imulsion posioning) led them underground. This happened during the Pendulum Wars. The Locusts only attacked humanity because at one point the Lambient War started and to survive the Queen commanded all non-infected Locusts to the surface and slaughter humanity and secure the surface.

@@Shakezula84 it's a shame they didn't just keep that original colony idea, and still go with the rest of the story. It would have made things more interesting in my opinion. You could have found lore involving musings about why no one from Earth or whatever ever answered distress calls, or if there was a time of Silence where the ships stopped coming and all contact ceased, leaving the colonists to wonder what happened. And after a few generations, no one would even care or remember that there HAD been a homeworld, as everyone now was born, grew, died on Sera. It'd be a footnote in history. But an interesting one.

1 thing I never understood about the Gears lore, is that if the Locust were created by humans around 50 years before E day. Then how did the Locust, went from a couple hundred to have a large enough population to wage a global war on two fronts, between the humans and the locusts?

In Gears of War, Earth doesn't exist nor does any of the other things like the solar system or the milky way galaxy. Gears of War is set in a fictional universe with a fictional solar system, galaxies, planets and so fourth.

In the beginning you can tell lore wise the writers had no idea what the lore was let alone planet Sera. They were clearly making it up as they went along. The lost earth colony definitely made more sense. But the devs was too busy trying to out smart the fans by making Sera it's own thing while sloppily trying to explain away the plot holes that made.

It has nothing to do with Earth. There was no colonization from humans of Earth. Think of it like Star Wars. It has humans in it, but it has absolutely nothing to do with our planet and our history.
