On the other hand _For all mankind_ is an alternate history which basically takes place in a fictionalized version of the space race and Cold War era during the 1960s and 1970s (I think) where the farthest they get is the moon, so I guess it’s not really a futuristic type deal?

@pompiliosouto24804 жыл бұрын
@@ViraL_FootprinT.ex.e They are different in some ways and similar in others. I've only recently started watching the expanse so I have yet to see the full picture, but the societal issues addressed on both shows seem comparable, though they are more of a focus for AC. AC also focus a lot more on the concept of the individual and the meaning of life itself, with less emphasis placed on the greater geopolitical scene of humanity. I'd say AC is more contained, as in more focused on people, whereas the Expanse seems more broad in its scope. They are both excellent shows imo.

@@ViraL_FootprinT.ex.e Really, it's comparing apple to oranges (Bear in mind, I'm comparing the two shows, as I have yet to read either novel series). The Expanse is a narrative driven story which focuses on the geopolitical (or inter-solar political, I suppose) landscape. Where as Altered Carbon is a more character-driven story set in a more distant futuristic setting that explores the potential social and moral changes that new technologies could/would create in society. After all, the thing that serves as the impetus behind the events of the entire latter series is the effects that "Stacks" ( the technology that makes mental uploading a very real possibility in the setting of Altered Carbon) have on human society, especially since it is ubiquitous with humanity by the start of the series. I still highly recommend that you watch Altered Carbon, if you haven't already. But, don't go into it assuming that it's going to be remotely similar to The Expanse.

Why is it evil?
@albertmitchell975 жыл бұрын
@@samuelhayden234 Stratified society; extreme poverty across the entire planet; most basics barely have any "basic" education, food, medicine and clothing; restrictions of basic freedoms; baby lottery; un-democratic government (I heavily doubt that basics are even interested on voting); almost all power is exercised by the Security Council and Secretary General (I don't believe they give a damn about the opinions of the General Assembly); Shared Interest Zones (do I have to say more?); and many other things that are better covered in the video. So, yeah... it's a pretty authoritarian government...
@TheVeritas15 жыл бұрын
C. Caner, Well put. What makes the U.N.in The Expanse fascinating is they aren't an Evil Empire. They are a civilization trying to make the best of a bad situation. It's made even clearer in that only a few characters from Earth are truly evil (e.g. Mao).
@albertmitchell975 жыл бұрын
@C. Caner Telimenli I'm not saying the UN its outright evil, I'm just saying it's somewhat authoritarian. I understand the measures taken to preserve human civilization on Earth, but we have to admit that many of the decisions made by the UN are pretty much assholish. That's all...

It's not that simple. The Martians are a bunch of militaristic jerks. Also, if you don't have a job on Mars, they'll recycle you into compost. Earth has the room and mercy to at least feed you and give you free internet.

I really dislike that trope. It may be because I am from Earth but I have a sentimental attachment towards good old Terra. Anyway Earth is the Homeworld of all humans and any colony that declares independence are a bunch of traitors.

Nnnno, MCRN gets a lot of fanon about it, but in the books it's portrayed as a very iffy state, and the military is basically the government, it's a technocratic ultranationalist state. Also, in the books there is more space to show more of Earth. Most of it is actually pretty good, and Avesarala talks to Draper about the challenges of feeding a population which insists on growing out of control. Also, the other factions do a lot of propaganda, where they accuse and demean the UN for their economic situation while the UN is propping the accuser's economy up with subsidies, the biggest spaceside industrial complex in the setting, and the capacity for construction of unimaginable scale except for the inadequacies of the rest of the system. Most phones and consumer goods in the entire setting are actually UN built, UN maintained, and run by UN companies. The UN navy even loans berths in it's shipyards to private manufacturing. UN runs medicine, food, and hauling interests. The interplanetary shipping industry is basically run as a natural growth of Earth's own economy.

Is not that it happened from one day to another, it was a very slow and gradual process that took about a century. Althought the books dont give many details it is mentioned that earth world powers started coming together to handle the demands of space exploration efforts while the UN was the body that coordinated those multinational efforts, when they established colonies on the moon, mars etc those were also managed by the world powers but through the UN. By the end of the 21st century the UN held significant power, but earth countries still remained independent and sovereign. Natianal goverments did pretty much a shit job at cooperating to counter their impact on the environment, in the 22nd century the damage to earths ecosystem was getting to a point of no return and overpopulation got to ridiculous levels, basically shit hit the fan and national goverments turned to the UN for solutions, and ended up giving their sovereignty in exchange. However not all countries gave up their independence, even on the 24th century, it is mentioned in the books that among other regions, Afghanistan is still indepedent, at least partially.
