"Đi bão", "storming", is the most popular way for Vietnamese to celebrate when our national soccer team wins. Note that it's mostly reserved for soccer/football only because of the high regard Vietnamese people hold soccer, compared to other sports. People ride together in waves of hundreds, if not thousands, making as much noise as possible, thus bringing the "thunder" and "storms" anywhere they go.
The U-23 national soccer team just won Vietnam another Gold Medal at the Sea Games 31 (South East Asians Games) right here in its home country. After over an hour of waiting, Nham Manh Dung, a young and talented player delivered the well-executed header that brought Vietnam the Gold Medal. Almost instantly, cheers followed by parties erupted in every corner of Vietnam. Millions poured out onto the streets, mostly on their motorcycles, to celebrate the win. This style of celebration is UNIQUE to Vietnam due to the high number of motorcycles. They often group up into parties of a few hundreds or sometimes thousands and just ride. But it's always more than just a ride. Watch the video to find out.
