Vietnam defeated Qatar, 4-3 in penalty shootouts during the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Semi-finals!!!
The entire country erupted into a massive party late into the night. Millions of people took to the streets on motorcycles and on foot to celebrate their Semi-finals victory here in Hanoi city.
I took a quick walk from my house in downtown Hanoi to the main gathering spot for partying around Hoan Kiem lake in the Old Quarter. It was INSANE!!!

Do you know Vietnam has a Korean coach? And team Korea already lost to Uzbekistan in the other U-23 Asian semifinal. In the group stages, Vietnam was second to Korea in their group. The celebrations actually reminded me of what Korean citizens were like during and after team Korea's penalty shootout Qtr finals against Spain at the 2002 World Cup lol.

I am a Vietnamese and this event to us was like once in a life time. I was not a soccer's fan but I should understand that Vietnamese football has been struggling at South East Asian Tournament and this is the first time that we made it to the final of an Asian Cup. The afternoon when the match was on, the whole city seemed to be so quiet except for any time that we attempted to or scored one point. And when we won, ALL people from ALL places they rushed outside, screaming and celebrating from that afternoon and even crazier until midnight. That was the night when I could se smiles from everyone's faces. Regardless of regions, religion, occupation and backgrounds, everyone became just one big group of Vietnamese football fan, celebrating our big win. That night was one of the nights in my life that I will not forget. Thank you U23 Vietnam.

TheFreeFlow I've been in various countries when they celebrate by honking car horns and stuff. This was my first time seeing soooooooooo many motorcycles and people all mixed together!

Oh it gets pretty extreme here when we win a world cup... Remember the last one... Well it may be because i´m in berlin but the honking just went on, nonstop, extremely loud, even backyards and windows closed and you´d still hear it lol. Some people actually even start shooting some few fireworks(though it´s technically illegal to do that outside of new years eve...). And of course the beer will flow in masses during that occasion, and/or... other substances too should one fancy such things.

It was crazy because it was literally the first time they made it that extra far. To Vietnamese this was like fairy tale or dream honestly. We didn't even expect to get in to the Sixteen. And when we did, people were just satisfied and again didn't expect to go further. This happens everytime the Vietnamese soccer team wins, everyone take to the streets, It’s always so fun seeing all of them rally around this one sport. To the vietnamese, Soccer is more than a sport, and their team goes to the game knowing their country watches them. It’s a spectacular sight to see the waves of red yellow starred flags riding down the street. I remember this specific cuo because it was the first time Vietnam went to the Asian finals. And I quote my grandfather who was also obsessed with soccer, this. “Thắng làm vua, thua làm anh hùng” which roughly translates to, Victory as king, or defeat as heroes. It was one of the proudest moment for the Vietnamese soccer team.

The atmosphere in Vietnam during that period was totally shown in this video. people from all ages joined in this victory. it's possibly no big deal to other country but for Vietnam, we have forgotten the feeling of victory for such a long time i myself not a fan of football at all. The traffic is no biggie for me. Also, I live a 15 minute walk away from Hoan Kiem lake, so I just leisurely enjoyed my time walking back home. The partying noises lasted until about midnight. So many of my coworkers came to work the next day slightly hungover and with sore throats from yelling and cheering. hehehe
