Seraphim and Cherubim

I know most people won't believe this but I have actually seen one of these in my bedroom. I was once lying in bed and I had been under tremendous stress and in a lot of prayer, I was under heavy attack from the Enemy. I was praying and starting to drift off to sleep when when I seen the cherubim in the room. It was about a foot off the floor hovering. The body looked like a cube shape because it was tucked in so tight, with its legs and wings wrapped around itself that it made a cube shape around itself, not a perfect cube shape but nearly. It was nearly translucent and when I looked at its head it had, the face of an ox, the face of a man, the face of a lion and the face of an eagle could be seen. The funny thing was all the faces where there within each other, kind of like when you look at a hologram and you slightly move your head, you see different things appearing but I was not moving my head just my focus in and out or I will blink and either way, when I did this, one of the faces would stand out more. You would blink and the face of a man would stand out, you would bring out your focus to look at the body and then back to the head and the face of an eagle would stand out. Even though their faces were still there one face was more prominent than the other at any one time. I believe God sent that there to protect me because the enemy was out for my life because of the stance on Gods word and what I was preaching.

God created serpents to be very wise creatures (Matt 10:16) so the metaphor is often applied over mankind in comparison because of the extent of intelligence as once an archangel with superiority.

The reasons why most theologians chose burning over serpent is that apart from the name, no serpent like feature is given to them. They had hands, feet, and basically described like a person. Also Seraph primarily means burning and is given to burning/poisonous snakes. Why would God need guards for his throne? The principal purpose that the bible illustrates them having is worshiping God. The second one is as ministers. In Isaiah the seraph picks up a coal and places it on Isaiah's mouth to purge his sin and take away his iniquity so that God could use him as his prophet. In Ezekiel the living creatures were carrying the throne of God around like a chariot.

I study Sanskrit. Sanskrit has always fascinated me because it is considered to be one of the first languages of the world. Sanskrit also has distant relations with Hebrew as well. In the Sanskrit language, "Sarpa" means serpent and "paksin", describes a bird's wings.

I've heard that the Hebrew word for serpent in the Genesis story, "nachash", can also mean "shining one." If this is true, it would bear some resemblance to the Sanskrit "deva", which also means "shining" and refers to a god. Remember that Vritra was a serpent, cast down by Indra. As language developed in the west, the word "deva" came to refer to evil spirits, particularly in Zoroastrianism.

The real answer the viewer’s subconscious mind allocating known things the unknown objects to mind’s eye. The eye can only see what mind knows. As so with the ear. That is why when listen to foreign music or language you sometimes think you can hear familiar words. So what they the seers saw is description of things known to them in physical life. Not accurate but subconscious association and estimation. so yes, there are spiritual beings who are winged serpents; the other name is dragon. Up to 6:19 we have some good research, appealing animation, and notes pulled together notes on how the Bible describes seraphim, cherubim, and "living creatures"... along with information about snakes in Egypt that may or may not be relevant. At 6:19, the "living creatures" in Rev. are referred to as "cherubim" without explanation for how that identification was reached (they share certain characteristics with both seraphim and cherubim). After that, the conclusions are more speculative. Are all these creatures throne guardians? They were all near God's throne, but that doesn't make them guardians of it. Gen. 3:24 and Ezek. 28 speak of cherubim as guardians, but in Gen. 3 they're guarding the way to the tree of life, and in Ezek. 28 the only location mentioned is "the holy mount of God," "among the fiery stones." Seraphim are not described as guardians at all in the Bible. The silliness about taking shifts seems only to serve as mockery, rather than evidence. The rest of the video unfortunately leaves the Bible behind and presents the author's interpretations. Calling a position "literalism" doesn't make it so. Maybe the Bible's descriptions of these creatures really just mean what they say. What's the justification for interpreting them symbolically? That being said, I appreciate Dr Heiser's work in sharing what he has learned and his efforts to help others be more biblically informed. I wish he were still with us to engage in discussion. Maybe he has even now met these living creatures, and knows more about them than we ever will in this life.

Ezekiel : "I looked.."; Isaiah: "I saw.."; John: I saw and heard these things...". Sounds pretty literal to me. Go back and read those passages and see, with your literal eyes, what the text is saying. These men are testifying to things they actually saw (and heard). Heiser is increasingly more shifty by the day. Oh, and Mike, there is no curve.

A vision does not necessitate literalness. Unless you think Jesus looks like a divine human being (Rev 1:12-16) while at the same time like a lamb (with seven eyes and seven horns) that has had its throat slit yet is still walking around (Rev 5:6). Like Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones, the prophet was not watching something literally unfold before his eyes. As made quite explicit in the text, the vision was a metaphor for "the whole house of Israel" that had been taken into captivity. It was a means by which God communicated his love for them and his intent to "bring [them] back to the land of Israel" (Ezek 37:1-14).

However I do believe that these are literal creatures in the spirit realm bear in mind the there are bodies in the spirit realm, just that they are spirit bodies. Hi, Dr. Heiser doesn't really monitor these comments. I'm the one who animated this video. I'm not a scholar, but I'm fairly familiar with Heiser's work so I'll give your question a shot. In The Unseen Realm, Heiser explains that The Garden of Eden is symbolic for Heaven. It was a place where Heaven met earth, thus a place where humans could enter God's presence. So cherubim guarding the garden is the same as them guarding God himself. It all rolls together.

Seraphim and Cherubim probably do not guard Yehovah like a guard at a bank. Guardian can also mean to serve like a butler. They are there to praise and glorify Yehovah. It is assumed by some that they not only glorify Yehovah, probably serve other lesser angelic beings. Because of their proximity to Yehovah, many consider the Seraphim to be the highest ranking of the angels or celestial beings. But we do not know if they are angels or an entirely different form of being. Many scholars believe their name comes from the root word in Hebrew for LOVE. Others like this person thinks it comes from the Hebrew word which means serpent, and others to burn completely. Seraphim glorify Yehovah, yet they cannot look upon Yehovah as probably the glory is too great. In the new Jerusalem there will be no need for light sources as Yehovah will be The Light! Some people do not see the difference between Numbers 21 and Isiah in the description. They are two different things and should not be confused. We see the seraphim not only have wings but hands, feet, and speak. The snake in Numbers called saraph is nothing of the kind. Cherubim can best be found in the Book of Ezekiel and some say appear to be closet to the thrown of Yehovah. They have 4 faces bird, ox, human and lion and feet like hooves. Discovering Seraphim and Cherubim is an interesting subject. Since we know so little, it is probably best if we just refer to them as celestial beings and go on to something else. The many artist paintings of angels and celestial beings are the artist rendition and are not necessary accurate...considering many artist make angels female, yet the 2 arch angels (3 if using the book of Enoch) are all considered male. Is 6:2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings... with two he covered his feet, He mentions Seraphim with the picture of a serpent without feet. seems unlikely this is the correct image. Again he mentions the skin on the side of the cobra like wings but yet this doesn't explain the wings being six. they seem to be the same types of wings. so do the Seraphim have 6 snake skin flaps? do the skin flaps on Cobras fly? "and with two he flew. ". again, seems like the wrong imagery. The epic of Gilgamesh and the story of Noah in Genesis are similar but not the same. it may be that the other religions are corrupt ideas and images. thus we should be careful not to rely on them too much.

There is not correct way to illustrate these beings because they do not have bodies. The attributes are symbolic. As to the symbolism of 6 wings, somewhere I read where Dr. Hesier said that 2 covering the feet protect God from defilement (since feet are considered dirty), 2 covering the face to protect the spirits from the overwhelming presence of God, and the 2 for flying are just for flying. (FYI, asking the question on Dr. Heiser's blog will more likely get you an answer from him. He does not follow KZbin forums)

To say something is symbolic just because the content seems a bit hard to understand doesn't mean it can't be understood as not symbolic. Even if it is symbolic in one religion doesn't mean it is the same symbols in another religion, especially a religion that is the religion(s) of an enemy. but it is note worthy. I think of these creatures as my friends. The reasen I say such a strange thing is the fact that when I was going through a very dark demonic oppressive time in my life many years ago. I don't think I was fully aware of the sound right away, it was more like I was getting ready to go upstairs and then I started to realize a very consistent sound that was all around me. I went through many months of being oppressed, like a heaviness and tormenting feeling in my heart. The only time it would letup was when I read the Bible. So that's pretty much all I did. I did have very good support from the church I went to at that time. The pastor and youth pastor helped me a great deal. One day the youth pastor talked to me after a church service and he said, "you have to stop being afraid of them". What he meant was that I had a great fear of demons. It's a long story but I'll just make it really short here. My best friend at the time got possessed by evil spirits/demons, and they decided to mentally and emotionally tare me apart. Plus it didn't end there cause over the months people I knew would get taken over and start the ball rolling over again. One morning they entered my mom. I ran upstairs and prayed that Jesus would remove them from my mom. I went back downstairs and she was in her right mind again. This is getting pretty long but the gist of it was the moment I stopped being afraid of them, that was when the oppression and torment lifted off of me. Also I have to add that you must have a relationship with Jesus in order to be set free. Otherwise I would have had every right to stay in fear. You're very welcome. Proverbs 29:25 says "The fear of man brings a snare: but whosoever puts his trust in the LORD shall be safe." All of what I have been talking about took place back in 1994. I did get set free from the debilitating fear that brought me torment, but I have a lot of the symptoms of what is now called PTSD. I'll be 44 this year and I still sleep with a light on. I use to get a lot of night terrors and stuff like that. But up to this moment it has been a few years since the last time it has happened. I did a lot of what you would call "spiritual warfare" for years. Where when something would happen I would be quick to bind and condemn any spirit that would come visiting me at night or rebuke them when I would awake out of a dead sleep and not be able to move or anything. Even if they shut my mouth I could still mumble the name of Jesus. His name is my only weapon, His name would break/stop everything they did to me at that very moment. Yes I understand about getting too personal. I am not a veteran but I'm sure there are other factors, but for the most part I am certain most of the trauma was from that night the enemy went inside of my friend. Thanks for the comments about my youtube page, yes my mom and I are close, can't say that was always the case many years ago. But God is good and she is now a believer too. I do not have children so all I can say is keep doing what you are already doing and know that it isn't in vain. Life in general for the believer, for now at least, will not always be an awesome time. It should be a constant reminder that this isn't are real home. So we have hope and that hope is Jesus the Son of God, and with Him, we can resist the Devil. 1 Peter 5:8-10 NLT. "Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. instead of saying that a seraph is a serpent, perhaps the term is a colloquialism or a term with a semantic domain that doesn't always directly mean serpent. Like a cobra is also a car or tube can mean television. If that's the case, they aren't necessarily serpentine.

How is it that Biblical "scholars" are so very pigeonholed? Why do they leave out so many useful details? Why do they avoid the science that would give the proper literalism? Have you Bible readers forgotten that in the Garden of Eden, God Cursed the Serpent? He did not curse the "snake". The serpent was cursed /into/ a snake. "Upon thy belly thou shalt go" indicates Clearly, that in the beforetime, serpents did Not go upon their belly. And what serpent-like creatures do not go upon their belly like snakes? Dragons! They are had in vision and vision is symbolic, but they are not of nebulous concepts that cannot be grasped, they are interpretations of a very real reality. Fiery Flying Serpents is a literally figurative translation, there is nothing symbolic about it. The serpents were radiant like fire, they flew, and they were serpentine. Pterosaurs. In Numbers 21 "fiery serpent" is "seraph nachash" so in the biblical context, regardless of what Pagans thought about it, seraph should be taken as a reference to fiery in terms of burning, such as the pain of being bitten by a venomous serpent or in terms of flames such as are associated with the Seraphim of Isaiah 6. There is no biblical indication that Seraphim are throne guardians, due to the single description we have of them, I term them "Keepers of the Eternal Flame." Also, FYI, serpents do not have hands and feet. And since their physical features are described then it is a case of special pleading to assert that they are spirits and so do not have bodies.
