This is Serban talking about how production use to be compared to how it is today. This video was from a panel discussion that was not suppose to be made public but ended up on KZbin. I talked to Serban about it today. This is all very useful information to know. I cleaned up the audio to take out the background noise.

That was really well put. I came up in the era of limited resources which was 16 and 24 tracks of tape and I'm sure that would have been a luxury to the earlier engineers. The imperative to be decisive in a recording session was huge. The vocal phrase that needs to get punched in over and the same for guitar parts while getting it done fast was necessary. It was all about keeping the session moving forward while getting the best results. Giving the musicians a great headphone mix that had compression and reverb on their instruments and giving them a feel for what the record may sound like in the 'phones made them play into it better.

He is 100% correct. I came up the exact same way back in the early 90s.

Totally agree. So frustrating on a session when someone says, "oh, we'll sort that out later"

I agree that committing is an important part of a production that younger engineers miss out on but I definitely don’t agree with the last part he said, music is cultural so everything in society has a part in it. Politics, war, religion, beliefs all play a part in this. If music is only entertainment to keep people pampered and asleep for escaping the hard reality then it’s not my kind of music. In my opinion music has everything to do with culture, life and society, it's mistakes and it's problems too and not only happy sunshine put your head in the sand escapism. No matter how good of a mixer or engineer you are. Music has an enormous connection with folklore, history, and their stories of past and present. Complete genres existed from oppression, crisis, social issues, war, freedom, anti war, anti capitalism, anti racism, anti apartheid, etc. If you only want happy music for your escapism and don't want to think or talk about issues, turn on mainstream radio and be a happy sheep. (and honestly I find this pretty stupid to say and definitely no ‘words of wisdom’ at all)

Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a great song. As is "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen. Definitely NOT wallpaper music. 😀 Modern day heavily promoted is way too safe/clean.

@@RealHomeRecording I totally agree with you and it’s not the pond I like swimming in 😅 I can name 50 great songs and artists which are a examples of, at the time, controversially lyrics. I like critical lyrics which have something to say about our cultural society’s 🤟🏼
