Kaya nga old school sistema ng basketball dito sa Pinas, napag iiwanan na ng ibang bansa.

Right on point! I just want to share my observation of how I think Pinoy basketball have become stagnant - if you look closely at the style of Pinoy basketball, it hasn't really evolved much since the time of of star players like Danny Florencio, Jun Papa, Robert Jaworski, etc. These are the players that our 80s, 90's and even current players model their games. Watch players today still doing the stretch layup perfected by Florencio and Bogs Adornado or the dirty play of Jaworski (just kidding). I think we the fans of Pinoy basketball should support the system that the SBP started. Let's not expect too much. The program will have ups and downs but knowing that there is a plan and a system to go with it, I am more than willing support Gilas without the PBA

A positive take on this: Now SBP and PBA can compare the results of 2014 preparation vs. 2019 preparation. Now they can reevaluate the program so come 2023, Gilas HOPEFULLY will be ready due to the lessons learned from this. I hope Ph basketball will change FOR THE BETTER due to this humbling experience.

Don't get disheartened by this loss. We will see if Serbia wins gold or not, but you gotta know that this team is mighty strong. Many of these players are comfortable with NBA style, but come from European school in which strategy and basketball basics are the king, and they first mastered that knowledge and experience before moving to NBA style. So these guys got it all. They took seriously all weaker opponents by now and carefully analysed them to make strategy and use their weaknesses, not leaving anything to chance. They won with similar score, but different strategy, against Angola and Puerto Rico, and against Italy that is a really good team, with good players and good tactical background, they won easily in the end just by exploiting brute force under the basket. If they will be stopped at any point, that will be from teams like Spain, Australia, France or Lithuania. These teams are similar to Serbia, combination of high basketball IQ, skills and physical power, winning mentality and in my opinion, they all come before this year's team USA as favourites for the gold. I watched USA this year, and aside from their talent and Pop and Kerr on the bench, they looked in too many possessions like many of them didn't really know what's going on on the court. In my humble and uninformed opinion, the reason for Asian teams struggling to catch up is too much influence from NBA on young developing players. Don't get me wrong, NBA is by far the best league of basketball and none other can even challenge that. But the best players of NBA are those that got so good that no tactics can stop them. You can implement strategy and push them to only shoot bad looks, but they will score anyway. Good example might be finals of World Cup 2014, where Serbia started well against mighty USA, played tactically giving them bad opportunities, held them, and there were two teams competing. But then Harden and Curry started shooting threes, no missing even from pretty bad looks, then other all stars joined, and they made the difference. Which is more important, they broke Serbia's moral into pieces, and destroyed them. That type USA teams, alien super starts, historically kicked ass of European teams, while USA teams that weren't made of best USA players historically struggled. That's mostly what is played in NBA, a basketball dependent on athleticism and skill. But even there, when Pop implemented some of European philosophy in that environment, he made the difference, the Spurs dynasty, and then Warriors came with similar approach... My point is that Pilipinas could maybe challenge Serbia in handles, dunks, athleticism of smaller players etc., but still couldn't even start to challenge them in the whole game of basketball. I think the reason is that kids today talk about triple-doubles, they support players and not teams, they practice flexing after scoring etc. NBA is not where you should start with basketball, it's where you should end. Serbian, and European school of basketball in general, don't have the cult of starting 5, triple-doubles, star players or similar. There's only cult of teams, winning, and to get there, you must figure out how to use your weapons and stop the opponent. That's why you will see different players having star role in different games, and players like Jokic playing supporting role with no ego problem until the time comes for his talents to be used as main weapon for appropriate opponent. If you have 60 point lead, you still hustle for every ball, you still play until the last second. That's how you build your attitude, and that's how you show respect for the opponent and the game. That's why Serbia is averaging 30+ assists. I ended up writing way more than I intended... We, international basketball fans, we know that Pilipinas love basketball, and being destroyed like this is probably not really good feeling. But try to learn from that. USA teams made of professional players kicked everyone's asses for a while by 50 points. But everyone started learning, and in Indianapolis 2002, both Yugoslavia and Argentina took them down. They weren't the best USA had to offer, but they were damn strong team anyway. Today, you don't have only team USA made of professional killers. You have Serbia, Spain, Australia, France, Lithuania... So, losing by so much from these teams is not really that bad, if you take it as a lesson.

I love these breakdowns! I'm glad you're back. My take on the what happened question between the 2014 world cup and this year's is coaching and preparation. This team had about 2 or 3 weeks of actually practicing together because of the PBA and the injuries to two of our best shooters. Another thing is Coach Yeng's system, in my opinion, doesn't fit the international game. In one instance against Serbia you cam hear him yelling at Bolick for not taking a lightly contested 3 with about 17 seconds in the shot clock. His style is simply if you're open shoot it, if you feel an advantage, go for it. That doesn't work against bigger, more experienced, and more talented teams. I hope we play a young and all local team in the SEA games this year and all the following FIBA competitions in preparation for the 2023 event that we will be hosting. I wanna see the NBA player Kai Sotto in 2023.

Yeah, that 2014 run gave us a false sense of security - thinking we were pretty good already. So the powers that be then came in decided to change coaches and they took Tab after just two years at the helm and without support from PBA teams lending only one player because they wanted their own guy there like Yeng. Then suddenly, all the teams began allowing their players to play for Gilas. No offense to Yeng Guiao but we need someone like Tab. It seems like the PH team was just winging it. His philosophy is too simplistic to take us to the next level. Like Tab said in your podcast we need to change our style of play if we want to be competitive with these internatinoal teams. Look at what he did to Ateneo, they were winning or was competitive against grown men and national teams. And Ateneo doesnt even have the most talented line up, they're just a great team

I think everybody in Europe knows that Filipinos loves basketball, and you are also talented players, but you lost compas here, i think you need better coach and plan of the game. Run&Gun is not the game for this team. You should also send players to Europe, even in smaller clubs, that would help for sure. And dont think people who knows basketball judge you by the losses you had here, people who does this dont know you....stay proud, head up high! Love from Serbia!

We've been taking those "shots" ever since and it had bailed us out at asian level but never at this level. No denying the whole team are dead serious and gave their best but gilas looked like they were just playing pickup. We are not running sets to generate good shots, we take too much time just to get in position, and it takes a LOT of dribble just at the initial execution. Easily read, lousy passes, less movement and no weakside action. And that is just the offense. We also have these consistent defensive lapses that we always make all the time. Cohesion and preparation was surely a factor, but im starting to wonder if perhaps our basketball knowledge is also a culprit- were not as good as we think moreso we may be playing a fundamentally incorrect, inefficient and ineffective basketball all this time Love these objective breakdowns, we dont get contents like these normally. Keep it up! Hope Gilas wins against Angola!

if we notice first quarter so close if we able maintaining that momentum until fourth quarter then we able make we are in the level of quality game but sad only Perez or Bolick maintaining it even though Fajardo play is rythm oky the rest seem not in energy show up or their rythm unable reconstruct because the intimidation of big Serbian that almost the ring unable to see cause our shooters no way. Another to consider I research that most Serbian players already played together since Brazil Olympic 2016 and in FIBA European Qualification include those NBA Serbians unlike in our gilas players only mainstay since 2014 World Cup are Blatche-Fajardo-Lee-Norwood-Aguilar and Rosario on Italy tune up game in 2016 that most of Italian players we face in this China World cup they were familiar on our Gilas player result most steel they able read our ways except Almazan-Ravena-Baroca-Pogoy they together with Blatche in FIBA Asia. the chemistry already in them ecept Perez-Bolick and another problem is Blatche remain not in good shape body (or troubling him his personal problem left in his home regard his child and sickly mother need consider it plus factor). Of course they had been together only a week after the PBA Championship and our two natural shooterr Wright-Lassiter injured. As well Castro our point guard who our asset on creating playing team game was in him is absent in our new Gilas point guard as Ravena. Moreover, Serbia is our first time we face on this game our Gilas never actually feel the level of tha players is NBA quality cause more problem for Gilas unlike Italy we already played before. Hope we shall prepare more time for even one month the final twelve was selected than a week!
