@Max E Serena didn’t play in as many tournaments and focused on winning slams that’s the only reason why she didn’t win as many and doing this also made her enter slams ranked very low in which she had a way tougher draw than Graf would ever have but she still has more grand slams than her therefore Serena is G.O.AT.

@Max E I’ll take your word but tennis greats are judged by slams in the open era, that’s why she is called the GOAT by many although I’d give Steffi second best. Serena was beating her as a teenager and when serving well you know Graf couldn’t rival Serena.

In order to be the best you have beat the Best. Serena defeated some extraordinary players during her early tenure such as Steffi Graf, Jenifer Capriati, Justine Henin, Amelie Muresmo, Martina Hingis, and Lindsey Davenport. She then defeated her rivals such as Li Na, Kim Clijsters, Dinara Safina, Jelena Jankovic, Ana I, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki and her sister Venus. She shaped a whole generation of players to find their form and follow in her footsteps such as Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Caroline Garcia, Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, CoCo Vandeweghe, Naomi Osaka, Sofia Kenin, and Coco Gauff. Serena’s influence has spanned across generations of players. A legendary player not only has paved the way for women’s tennis but paved the way as an American sports icon! Jordan sending her shoes as a gift at the 2017 Australian Open Championships said enough! 🇺🇸✨✨✨✨7️⃣3️⃣🎾🏆

Slams won: Serena - 23/77 (29.8%) Steffi - 22/54 (40.7%) Steffi is the only player in history to win all 4 slams and an Olympic gold in a single season (1988). She won a whopping 21 Slams in only 9 years (1987-1996) before winning her final one 3 years later. She also made 13 straight slam finals at one point and had FIVE 3+ Slam seasons. Serena has only had two 3 Slam seasons and her longest final stretch was four. It took Serena 18 years to win 23 Slams and Steffi 12 to win 22. Overall titles: Serena - 74/236 (31.3%) Steffi - 107/223 (47.9%) Additional notes: Steffi had 5 seasons in which she won 10 or more titles, including a season in which she won 14 (1989). Serena has had one such season (2013). Even though Steffi played less tournaments than Serena, she won 33 more titles. Win-Loss record: Serena - 843-147 (85.1%) Steffi - 902-115 (88.7%) Steffi has had a 90+ win % in TEN seasons compared to Serena's 6. Moreover, over a 4 year period in 1987-1990, Steffi recorded 305 wins compared to only 12 losses and won 9 out of 12 Slams, an unprecedented level of dominance never before or since seen on a tennis court. She then had ANOTHER dominant period in 1993-1996 in which she won 235 matches and lost only 18, winning 10 of 14 Slams she competed in. Serena has never displayed such dominance at any point in her career. Weeks ranked at #1: Serena - 319 Steffi - 377 Year-End #1s: Serena - 5 (2002, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015) Steffi - 8 (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996) Winning record over players who have been ranked in the top 10: Serena - 427-177 (78%) Steffi - 452-91 (83%) Olympic singles medals: Serena - 1 gold (2012) *Steffi- 1 gold (1988), 1 silver (1992)* Steffi is also in the top 2 best players of all time on all surfaces, while Serena lags considerably behind Evert, Graf, Court, Seles, Henin and even Sanchez Vicario on clay. Steffi is also the only player in history to win all slams at least four times and the only player to defend each major at least once. Steffi achieved more than Serena despite retiring at the age of 30. One Slam more for Serena simply isn't enough to overshadow all of Steffi's amazing accomplishments and records. She still is, without a doubt, the greatest female tennis player of all time. Serena's fixation on slams and complete disregard of every other event will hurt her in the long run as far as the GOAT debate is concerned. She simply was never able to achieve the level of dominance and consistency like Navratilova, Evert and especially Steffi.

That Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players and a cultural icon who has inspired so many female (and male) athletes, as well as people of color, is undeniable. She will be greatly missed, but... Serena Williams vs. Steffi Graf - by the numbers GRAND SLAM SINGLES TITLES/GRAND SLAMS PLAYED: Serena 23/81 (28%) Steffi 22/54 (40.7%) # of Seasons to Achieve Slam Total (Years Between 1st and Final Major Win): Serena 19 Steffi 13 SINGLES TITLES/TOURNAMENTS PLAYED: Serena 74/235 (31.5%) Steffi 107/223 (48%) WEEKS RANKED # 1: Serena 319 (3rd all-time) Steffi 377 (1st all-time) CAREER SINGLES RECORD: Serena 836-147 (85 %) Steffi 902-115 (88.7 %) RECORD vs. PLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN RANKED IN THE TOP 10: Serena 427-177 (78%) Steffi 452-91 (83%) # of Seasons in which player ended season at #1: Serena 5 (retired at age 40) Steffi 8 (retired at age 30) Both have won Olympic gold Steffi won a calendar Grand Slam (All 4 majors in the same year) and a Career Golden Slam in singles Serena won a non-calendar slam and a Career Golden Slam in singles AND doubles. Graf is the only player to win EACH MAJOR four times or more. This possibly suggests that Graf had greater versatility across different surfaces. On the other hand, Serena has a far more impressive record in doubles. So, why is the greatest player of all time argument so incredibly one-sided in Serena's favor? Are fans and analysts prisoners of recency bias? Is it because one of the players is American and the other was a foreigner? Is it because Serena is an extremely public figure who has successfully branded herself in the internet age while Graf was a bit introverted and shy? One might argue that Steffi would have won fewer titles if Monica Seles had not been stabbed. However, I would also suggest that if Venus Williams had not suffered from Sjogren's Syndrome, a serious fatigue disorder, in the prime of her career, she would have taken a few of Serena's grand slams. There is absolutely no doubting the cultural significance of Serena Williams as an American icon and as an inspiration to all female athletes and people of color. She should obviously be considered as a leading candidate in the GOAT discussion; however, I am truly baffled that Graf is not even in the conversation when you look at the numbers.

Billie Jean King - 129 6. Steffi Graf - 107 7. Evoone Goolagong - 86 8. Suzanne Lenglen - 83 9. Maureen Connolly - 79 10. Serena Williams - 73 The only reason why Serena makes the top 10 list is because there is no data for players who won a lot like Althea Gibson, Shirley Fry, Doris Hart and Margaret Osborne, otherwise she would barely be in the top 15. The fact that she has never been able to sustain her dominance or play consistently week-in and week-out only highlights that she is a weak era champion who saw vulturing Slams against the likes of Zvonareva, Jankovic, Radwanska, Safina, Wozniacki, Safarova and others as a means of getting a shortcut into the all time greats club when in reality ALL her stats are so far behind everyone else on this elite list.
