I never really hated even when he was a villain he was really good at being evil but you could see that he was just broken he wasn't evil for the hell of it. Damon has been hurt so many time that he's built a wall up around hes heart cause he's afraid to get hurt again if you don't understand him all you are going to see is a monster who kills people. He was considered the black sheep everyone chose Stefan over him and everytime something went wrong he was blamed for it. It was easier being the bad guy than being the good one and getting hurt again in the end.

But he's not human, he's a vampire. Stefan also did terrible things during his time as a vampire, but so many people seem to give him a pass and not Damon, and I just don't get it.

It didn’t click at the time but after a couple rewatches the fact that Elena tells Damon not to do his eye roll (which he does with others not just Elena) tells us she’s actually attracted to Damon and doesn’t want him to do it anymore because she finds it sexy. So she wants him to stop being himself because she feels guilty about wanting to hop on the Damon Salvatore Express.
