One of my favorite line readings of all time is in the scene where Mal says, "Sooner or later they'll come back around to the idea that they can make people better" then he glances at River. It's subtle, but that's what makes it so great. He doesn't have to say it because that glance and the pause says everything. River is in many ways the same type of experiment as the people on Miranda.

This is the film that first brought Chiwetel Ejiofor to my attention, and I've remembered him and his name ever since. His performance as the Operative in this film is so sinister, chilling and quietly creepy (completely opposite of most "bad guys" in movies, that tend to be over the top in some way). And he manages to have his own code, which is weirdly honorable, even as he's completely terrifying. He's SOOOOO good. It's unforgettable.

I think the big narrative advantage of killing Wash is that the final conflict immediately feels WAY more dangerous and unpredictable - you yourselves had that moment of legitimately wondering "are they ALL going to die??" Summer Glau was a dancer, and the stunt team were thrilled to work with her. They put a pole in the fight scene in the bar because the stunt team found out she could kick around it. I saw the film before I saw the show. I sat there as the credits rolled and said "Again, again." I loved seeing you react to the movie. BTW, Joss Whedon did try to make you think that everyone was going to die. There's a term for that kind of movie but it would spoil the movie that gives its name to "everybody dies"
@JeffKelly037 ай бұрын
Yep - when they said "She's moving like a ballerina through the Reavers" I was thinking, "That's funny, because Summer Glau WAS a ballerina." And, in fact, her first ever TV credit was as the ghost of a ballerina in "Angel" which is, obviously, another Whedon show.

@@RamblersInc That's also a role where her background as a dancer was very useful. Many women in action movies have backgrounds like that. You must be able to precisely plan your movements. Great reactions. The movie had to be made for fans and people who never saw the show. The Miranda storyline was supposed to be revealed at the end of season 2. Book's death was to help believe in some cause. Wash's death was to show how deadly this situation is. Book's back story is in a comic book named A Shepard's Tale. Inara had a secret. There was a small nod in Out of Gas. There is a book called Life Signs that tells the story. I want to thank you both for reacting to the show and movie.

Now that you've finished the series, it's time to clue you in on a very popular theory on the show. Each member of the crew represents a part of Mal, that he feels he's lost. He hired Zoe as his second-in-command because she was a fellow soldier who fought with him in the war against the Alliance. He keeps her around because he needs someone who has been in the same boat as himself from a soldier's perspective, and have at least one person who will remain fiercely loyal to him without question. He keeps Wash around because he needs an excellent pilot, as well as someone with a sense of humor. He keeps Kaylee around because he needs a great mechanic and someone to remain hopeful. He keeps Simon around because he needs a doctor who can patch up his crew in his dangerous line of work and help him heal from within. He keeps River around because she's a mindreader and needs someone who possesses a sense of wonder. He keeps Book around because he needs someone who has faith and also serve as his conscience. He keeps Inara around because he needs to love and to be loved. He keeps Jayne around because he needs the extra muscle when the going gets tough, and while Jayne is a self-preservationist, he has also shown to be unexpectedly generous at times when it involved the safety of the crew. The Serenity crew has become Mal's family and it is through them that he ultimately pieces back together his broken life by rediscovering the things that he lost: loyalty, humor, hope, peace of mind, sense of wonder, faith, love, and generosity

And it was very well paced - they did do a lot of exposition that could have dragged, but they did it well, I think. My head cannon is that Book was an Operative like the villain in this, before he lost his faith like this one and turned to religion. Idk how accurate that is - I think there's a comic that goes into his backstory, but I haven't read it yet (but plan to, so no one spoil it for me, please!)

Zoey at funeral wore a slinky dress. (Shindig) Not word of Joss but of Gina Torres (actress who played Zoey) she (Zoey, the character, not the actress) was pregnant. Now for Jayne/River theory. Jayne in pilot said (to lawman) "it's a girl. She's not all there but not all of her has to be." If River is a willing woman, his part is set. In Ariel when she first wakes up she says to Jayne, "Copper for a kiss." When she is going on about Christmas presents everyone ignores her gibberish, except Jayne getting pissed. Those are his memories and for some reason she finds him fascinating. In the bar in the movie he can sneak up on a effing psychic because in a fight he does not think, he just does. When he thinks on the ship, she takes him easily. (That also explains why she couldn't dodge his blow after the butcher knife in Ariel, although that might just be her being nuts.) No accounting for taste and River might be well advised to keep a guy who can sneak up on her loyal to her, and she likes him for some reason.

There were plans for two sequels. The actors who played Wash and Book could only sign on for the first film, hence those characters being the ones to die. Sadly the film only just met production costs at the box office. Normally films need to double the production costs at the box office to be officially profitable (I believe marketing is very costly). So no sequel was ever commissioned. This was not a surprise as very few mid budget films actually make a profit. Whilst there was a lot of fan support for a movie, I think it was more a case of Whedon wanted to make the film and Universal wanted to work with Whedon (he was already an Oscar and Emmy nominated writer at the time). The fan support probably helped but I think in the main it was old fashioned Hollywood politics that lead to this being made. The Veronica Mars film on the other hand was entirely funded by the fans through Kick Starter. I'm sure if KS had been around in 2004/5 then maybe we'd have got the sequels as well.
@RamblersInc7 ай бұрын
Yeh I agree. If it was fully fan funded, this movie might have been slightly different as well.

Unfortunately, back when this first aired in the theatre, I accidentally came across someone who'd gone to the first showing of it, and they posted about Wash. I immediately clicked out of the post, but I had seen that he was going to die. I didn't see how, or when, or why; I just knew it was going to happen somehow. So my first viewing of the film in the theatre was particularly brutal because I felt on edge the whole time, waiting, anxious, wondering when it was going to happen and hoping that I saw it wrong. I hoped it had been someone's joke that didn't actually happen in the film. I was still devastated when it happened. I think what made me maddest about Wash's death is that it happens so quickly and -- like Mal and Zoe and the crew -- we don't get a single moment to deal with it or mourn. He doesn't get his "moment" like Book did. Instead, he's just gone and there's no time, and that's what's so heartbreaking to me. I just felt so upset and lost about it. (And yeah, all these years later, I'm still not over it either. It still makes me sad. He was one of my favorite characters.) When I first saw the film, I went in with no other expectations, but by the final battle, I wondered if ANYONE was going to survive! Everyone was dead or wounded and in terrible danger, and I just thought, "If they kill everyone off, I'm going to be SO UPSET! I will never watch the film again! I will only acknowledge Firefly the series if that happens!" Even still, after seeing it a few times in the theatre (because I wanted to support the show in hopes that it might do well enough to warrant another movie), it took me a long time to go back to it. I purchased Serenity on DVD but couldn't bring myself to watch it for a long time because the thought of it broke my heart. In time, I've managed to appreciate the film on its own and love many parts of it, and I have rewatched it, but not as often as I rewatch Firefly. I will always be heartbroken over the loss of Book and Wash. And Firefly the series will always be my most favorite - there's so much love and great humor and intensity in it that I rewatch over and over again. Thank you so much for sharing your reactions as you watched the series and the film. You have been true fans and Browncoats. ❤🤎 I hope we get to see your reaction to the Firefly and Serenity gag reels / bloopers because they are SO funny.

Joss Whedon said everyone had a secret. Rivers was what was shown. Shepherd's (Short answer) was he used to be similar to an operative for the alliance, and Inara's was that she was dying of an illness, which is why she wanted to travel on the ship and see the verse (versus staying at the House or traveling on a cruise ship). Also why she didn't want a relationship, knowing she was going to die. The 1st episode she had a needle and it seemed to imply it was some sort of suicidal pill type device. The "Out of Gas" when Simon said he didn't want to die on the ship, she said "I don't want to die at all." Then since it cancelled and it was just the movie , Joss did away with that story line.

@@RamblersInc I don't know. They've never said. Apparently some people seem to think it has to do with his upbringing. Either in how he knew how to dance at the ball being that he was from a wealthy family, or that his mother was a companion. Either way it took 20 yrs for Joss to let Inara's loose. He still wanted to continue the series.

Releasing a movie only as fanservice would have been a financial disaster in this case. The fanbase of the show wasn't big (but very fanatic and vocal though) because of the way they were treated by Fox. So they had to make it like a stand-alone to get a return on the costs. They had, in case of overwhelming succes, in mind to maybe continue the series. But in that case Alan Tudyk (Wash) couldn't commit so he got a heroes' death.
@RamblersInc7 ай бұрын
Fair point. I wasn't thinking about the cost and recoup aspect of making a movie. They'd need to try to get new viewers into it.

Minor retcon for the movie, Simon got River out, rather than hiring folks to get her out and ship her to him in a cryogenic unit. I'll allow it. 😊 Mal is more irritable and snippy now, because the two people he could talk to about stuff, that were not in his chain of command, Book and Inara, are off the ship. Both had counseling skills, and Mal could talk about anything with one or the other of them.

The thing is, once you kill Wash, the whole rest of the movie, every other character's life seems truly in danger. If they'll kill off someone as innocuous and loveable as Wash, who else will Joss kill? You guys, during the firefight scene, thought it plausible that they'd all die. The movie happened because of fan demand and DVD sales. Unfortunately, the fans were pretty much the only ones who paid to see it and the sequels Joss hoped for died. The only way I am able to like this film is to thinknof it as an alternate universe. I can then ignore the complete rewrite of River's rescue, the tension between Mal and Simon, and a few other things. Plus, I can think the Wash from the show is stillbalive. It was at thar moment that I no longer cared to watch any sequels. River was at least 16 on the show, so the movie is set closely to the show, but the alternate universe theory that I may be alone on, explains that.

@@RamblersInc The Lost Boys: I was stoned one night watching a vid about CERN when this Abstract Inversion opened up in front of me (unrelated). The twin brothers (Serenity) named Fanty and Mingo are mirrors of two LB characters called the Frog Brothers. During their LB intro, they warn a new resident (Corey Haim) about vampires and offer him a comic book to prepare. So, I just HAD to pose this Q regarding the "Oaty Bar" subliminal advertising River watched as the brothers were WARNING Mal and Jayne... Since when does an Octopus have such menacing TEETH? Abstract Inversion requires the comparison of every scene/sequence one can remember before the necessary REVER-sal of details. Example: Serenity...30 million residents of 'Miranda' all just lay down and died. Right?? In LB, when his grandson asks about murder in their new hometown, longtime resident "Grandpa" responds with: "If all the corpses that are buried around here were to stand up all at once... we'd have one helluva population problem!" 🤔 Oh yeah, Octopus...Vampire?? They both SUCK.

If Serenity did big enough numbers at the box office another movie would've been made, or maybe more TV. But alas, not quite.
