I'm still amazed that Serenity had only 39 million dollar budget. This clearly shows that modern "filmmakers" with their astronomical budgets are basically incompetent or they launder money on truly massive scale.

A large part of the reason why it was able to work with a low budget was because none of the actors were A list stars and thus only a small part of the budget went to paying cast, freeing up the budget to be spent on the actual film. If you take a film like Passengers, the two principal actors cost over 30 million dollars alone, before you’ve set up a single light or painted a backdrop.

There’s blame to throw at Whedon for this. He did a lot of self absorbing whining and complaining about how he couldn’t possibly return to Firefly after what the studios did to him. That was the start of my dislike of him. He should have manned up (big leap, I know) and established the series. He acted like a victim and made it all about him. Which in his mind it was. Criminally underrated film. Where Hollywood is really falling is poor writing, yet here is a masterclass on how to do it right. Whedon is able to bring a complete outsider into his complex and interesting universe, without boring voiceovers, with a fast paced and fun story, that still has a deep emotional punch. Mal’s change from thief to hero is fantastic to witness, yet it never feels forced or unnatural. It’s the deep conviction that drove him to be a soldier re-emerging from him. Mal’s final wisdom to River always brings a tear to my eye: “Ain't all buttons and charts, little albatross. Know what the first rule of flying is? Well I s'pose you do, since you already know what I'm 'bout to say. I do. But I like to hear you say it. Love. Can know all the math in the 'verse but take a boat in the air that you don't love? She'll shake you off just as sure as a turn in the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down...tell you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens...makes her a home.”

Almost total agreement. Although a surprise, I think River's physical conditioning was a natural element of what the Alliance stood for. I got this series on physical media after completing my box sets of Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Farscape. I was craving something new and this got some really positive reviews. The show was amazing and had a terrific ensemble and amazing chemistry. As you say the movie could have been enjoyed without the series, but the series provided context and depth.

I began a much needed re-watch of the Firefly series just this week! I once heard Jonathan Ross describe it as Star Wars-meets-Blake's 7-meets a western, and I think that sums it up well. It is vastly superior to the sci-fi we're getting now. I discovered it with the Serenity movie at the cinema and then found the series. Wonderful.

I don't know what Fox's problem was in the early 2000's. Seems like if a new show didn't debut on top and stay there, they yanked it immediately. Firefly, Dark Angel, John Doe, Titus, etc . . . all good shows that didn't really get a chance.

I suspect that a lot of network executives got their positions through luck, office politics, nepotism, etc., but *think* they got where they are from actual skill. They make stupid snap decisions (like air episodes of a serial story out of order), and if that kills the show, they blame the creators and move on to the next show.

Serenity plays fast and loose with River's backstory, but it's a fantastic film otherwise (and I actually prefer Serenity's version of River's backstory). For me, one key thing that makes the film great is that it has an incredible villain. He's a true believer who really thinks he's fighting for a better civilization. He even dismisses the atrocities he's committing by saying that he knows he's a monster and that he'll have no place in the Alliance's utopia. He just believes so strongly in what he thinks they're trying to accomplish that he's willing to do anything to make it happen. And like Dave said, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the role brilliantly.

River Tam going full on action hero is a fantastic moment in the film. Until then, she had always been a problem or a puzzle. Something to hide or fix. But when she embraces her power, grabs a weapon, and intends to sacrifice herself, so her brother and her friends can live, it brings home everything the film is about. Absolutely 100%.

I didn't think too many people thought as highly of this film as I do. I feel it is tightly plotted, and all threads weave together naturally. Character arcs progress is believable ways, and it is just a gorgeous film to look at. I also feel the exposition scene at the beginning is one of the best in cinema history. It tells you everything you need to know, while also being part of the plot, and going from one scene into another rather than being a simple voiceover or words on the screen. When the main crew is introduced in a long shot, each character shows you who they are in such a short sequence, such that you can get on with the main plot rapidly with minimal introduction. So well done.

As much as I adored "Buffy" and "Angel," I agree that this is Whedon's best work *because* it's his tightest. Not just that it was only 14 episodes and a movie, but I think this is Whedon at his most reigned in, dialogue- and gag-wise. And he managed to inadvertently make one of the least-authoritarian, pro-liberty shows ever, so bonus!

I think it was advertently; he and Minear were hitting George W Bush from the libertarian Right. The Alliance is nothing if it is not neoliberal. The aim was to suppress Right turnout in 2004. It didn't work but it did get us Rand Paul, arguably also DJT. Whedon would try to retcon all this as some sort of feminist parable, but nah.

All films should be like that.

I would normally agree about River becoming a living weapon, if it were out of the blue introduced solely for the movie, but even in the show, in War Stories, River goes bad-ass with the gun, proving she's more than just a mental prodigy. So it's still within the show's canon.
