How they only showed up twice, but never did amount to much, other than capture the girl in a suitcase in one episode? But then again, what's really disturbing about Firefly is that it's KKK fanfiction insofar as it's a denial that the American Civil War was fought over slavery... let that sink in for a moment.

Fox really missed a huge opportunity with this show. It absolutely had the potential to go 10-15 seasons and become a franchise that would make Star Trek look like Gilligan's Island. It is easily one of the top 5 best Sci-Fi television shows ever produced. The stories were superb, the production top notch, and the actors were amazing. I was so pissed when it got canceled.

This was during a period where Fox kept getting handed solid content and doing everything possible to sabotage it. They kept moving House MD around to different nights and nearly cancelled it until someone pointed out that DVRs were a thing and it was the most DVR'd show in history at the time. They cancelled King of the Hill after failing to show basically the entire 9th season because football kept eating up the entire time slot. Same thing with Futurama either changing the day it aired or allowing football to simply consume the time slot entirely.

Personally I don't like TV shows that "go on forever". No matter how good they start, sooner or later they all go downhill for lack of ideas to keep them fresh but still within the lore they built up. Examples would be the Simpsons or Friends. I prefer shows with a story arc that's more or less clear (to the producers) from the get-go. Shows like Babylon 5 (originally planned for five seasons but messed up a bit due to financial reasons) or Buffy (with a perfectly fine ending in season 5, then getting extended by another 2 seasons with another (imo) perfectly fine "second ending" in s7). I think the 3 to 7 season range is the optimum for a tv show length. Less than that and you tend to lack character development and world building. More than that and stories tend to get stale or ridiculous or contradict the established lore. So imo 5-ish seasons for Firefly would've been perfect and realistic, had the broadcasters taken any serious interest in the show.

My favorite fun fact tangential to the series: while DVD encryption had been broken for many years, when HD-DVD and Blu-Ray came out, they had newer, better encryption, and folks were concerned that the studios had beaten the pirates for once. Well, that proved to be short-lived, as both were broken, with the first movie ever decrypted from HD-DVD being Serenity. You can't stop the signal.

I think a reboot would fail spectacularly, at this point. Serenity happened soon enough after the show's cancellation that you could still get the same actors, writers, etc together. Now, everyone has gone their multiple ways...Ron Glass has gone to The Great Beyond...it would be almost impossible to recapture the alchemy of the original series. Additionally, it's now been almost two decades since Serenity. That's two decades of people building up in their minds what a continuation or reboot could be...and the likelihood of writing something that would live up to those expectations for a large enough percentage of fans to be satisfied is so incredibly tenuous as to be non-existent. Any attempted spin-off/reboot/continuation would likely be as divisive as the sequel trilogy has been to Star Wars. A big part of the original success of Firefly was the uniqueness of the show. Nobody had seen anything like it before. Much as I love the show, I think attempting anything more than a one-off feature-length or miniseries production would fall short of expectations, because it's not going to capture that novel factor of being something all-new. On top of that, two fan-favorite characters would be missing...Wash could only appear in flashbacks, and Shepherd Book would have to be recast completely if he was going to be used at all--and could likewise only be used in flashbacks. Those two characters were significant factors in the show's appeal. A continuation series without them would lack a lot of the magic. It would be like trying to continue Star Trek:TOS without Scotty or Bones. At this point, Firefly will live longer in the minds of its fans by being a series cancelled too soon and the imagined possibilities that they create from that inspiration. Anything else is going to fall short of expectations, and while it might provide short-term satisfaction, in the long term, it would only water down fan enthusiasm.

I have a way to make it work: *Firefly Cobra Kai.* In other words you use the old characters to introduce a new main cast, keeping the best main characters interested/left with big roles. Cameos for whomever (including minor roles like BAxter!) Totally would work. Needs whedon though. Stephen DeKnight runs show, Whedon EPs behind the scenes. This is the way. The ACTUAL way.

@@musicman8270 Star Trek reinvented itself, essentially, as far as TV series. The movies had the advantage of having the entire core cast return. And the one time they killed off a core character, the next movie was all about bringing him back from the dead. They may be able to come up with something set in the Firefly universe...but Wash and Book are pretty irredeemably dead. That's like Star Trek without Scotty and Bones... I'd love to be proven wrong, believe me. It would be awesome to see The Further Adventures of Mal And The Crew...but I just don't see it working out well.

It truly is a tragedy that Firefly did not last very long. I’ve done my best to collect all the comics as well as the movie and TV show on DVD. I’ve always appreciated Nathan Fillion‘s desire to revive it, having referenced it a few times in his other big show Castle, as well as voicing the “space” cowboy super hero Vigilante on Justice League Unlimited.

I was actually hoping for a series called "Booke" taking on the story of Shepard Booke as an operative. There are many points in Firefly and Serenity where he lets things slip about his on time life, like his ident card when he was wounded.

I have a concept for the next iteration. Kaylee and Simon are living on Persephone, running a starship repair business and a medical clinic respectively. They have a couple of kids and auntie River takes care of them. River is still far from normal, but much more balanced and in control. Of course it took money to start these businesses, and Badger generously provided this. Besides exorbitant payments, they often have to supply services to Badger's less-than-honorable clients. Jayne owns a bar. Malcolm and Zoe would be guest stars (worked around their network show schedules) We would add some new characters, some people that work at these three businesses. Since Baccarin doesn't want to be involved, there would be the story of loss here. Since she was supposed to have a deadly disease this make sense. If she's willing to come back for an episode or two they could do this in flashback.

I'm so glad they filmed Firefly in widescreen, because that helps to keep it from looking so dated. Though this was filmed in the era where shows like that still looked like they were filmed on a stage instead of feeling like it's in a real ship. So that kind of dates it in a way. Though this is still my all time favorite tv show.

The selection of the cast was ... inspired. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing those roles. The imagination of Joss Whedon provided fertile ground for the story to take flight. Without their collective passion, dedication and creative abilities any subsequent reboot of the series is likely to have a quite different flavour. From the first episode of Firefly that I watched I was enraptured. I would love for a re-visit, but... time has moved on and left the show, as it stood, in the past. All that said, however, I am reminded of how I felt about Star Trek [The Original Series] and the role of Captain James Tiberius Kirk. How could anyone reprise the role without it being William Shatner? He didn't. Chris Pine under the directorship of J.J. Abrams breathed new life into the genre. It wasn't ST[ToS] writ large on the big screen. In a lot of ways, it was better. So, Firefly. I won't be rooting for a continuation primarily because I don't think it can happen. But a re-boot with the right guidance and a decent budget and time slot? Oh, YES PLEASE!!

I wanna see a new show, with new crew and ship... set 15-20 years after teh events of Serenity. That way we can get the OG crew to cameo AND the story in that movie would be the catalyst for the backstory of the new show. How did the people and the Alliance handle that news of the Reavers origin and what was done? How did they handle the Reavers after that (esp since more and more seem to always be showing up in the original show and movie)... Make a story of a new rebellion maybe, or general unrest in the outer systems- maybe a successful break away from many of htem with the tumultuous signal of the truth... THEN look 10-15 forward from that... and THAT "from the ashes/when things finally begin to settle" period is the new show's starting point. Could be really cool.

I am a huge fan of Firefly. I think the whole cast and the dialogue was top notch. And although I was never really an X Files fan, in the clip you showed, that must surely have been a homage to another show I love dearly, Kolchak. Now I need to find and watch that X Files episode. I had heard that X Files was influenced by Kolchak but to see a character in his iconic suit and hat gave me a huge smile! But Firefly without Joss and the original cast would be worse than not having more Firefly at all. It just could never have the same magic!

I watched it premier in Austin running after Andromeda on Saturday afternoons. Terrible time slot, bad order, and no advertising. That said, watching the train job with no warning of what to expect as some out-of-the-blue TV show on a random Saturday afternoon was mind blowing. I was immediately hooked. When he kicked the guy into the engine, well, that was just not done in TV sci-fi at the time. The whole series as short as it was, was surreal. Nobody was watching it, I had nobody to talk to about it, and when I did they looked at me like I was nuts. It was my own special sci-fi TV show just for me. A most memorable experience.

They killed off Wash, i.e., they stabbed us in the back. Do I wish for an alternate universe where the series was treated with respect and continued? Firefly was an INCREDIBLE show. I would love a revival...if they brought back the original characters. When Disney said they were looking at doing a Firefly reboot I was hesitant and apprehensive. I don't feel they would do the show justice. None the less, a proper reboot would be warmly welcomed!

I actually watched Serenity first, then learned from others that it was based on the show and I bought the DVD set. I was quite disappointed that so few episodes were available, but quickly became a fan. With the death in Serenity of a main character (no spoilers), I didn't see a revival happening unless the timeline put it before that. At this point, the actors are far older and I don't see it ever coming back. Nathan Fillion is still my favorite actor though and love him in Castle and The Rookie!

I personally think that a continuation with a complete recast is totally possible. As much as I ADORE the original cast and wish it was never cancelled... there are PLENTY of talented actors around. Have the movie be a premonition that the new cast avoid, slow introduce the concepts from the movie until mirroring its finale with the "S1 finale" then boom, open things up. But with Wash still piloting, dammit. No leaf on the wind! Tudyk's idea for a later continuation is extremely intriguing though. Makes sense to me too.

After 55 years of watching and loving A and B level scifi offerings I welcome the "reimagining" of a new FIREFLY with a new or mixed with older original characters. The first version was created of its own time. Nostalgia is a fantasy effort. Creativity is magnificent. The only relevant issue is if a new version has a visionary leader with a solid character strong story arc and a studio willing to invest. Returns are dicey with a younger audience. Example is the excellent WILLOW which failed to woo a more cynical younger audience. Have hope. I do

I've enjoyed the graphic novels and current book series. I'd love to see a reboot of sorts, but capturing the chemistry of the original cast is the greatest risk. I think there are plenty of stories to tell to give us a 4 or 5 season run using the streaming model of 8 to 12 episodes each. If not the Firefly series then maybe doing something with the Galaxy Outlaws series by Morin might work.

I don't watch TV shows at all, but I love Firefly. The actors did a fantastic job with their characters. They were complex people that had good and bad to them. The only other shows I'll watch are House MD and Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch's version). Those both have the same feel because the "heroes" are all greatly flawed in some way.

I was usually up on space movies growing up. Never ever did I see an advertisement of FireFly tv series. Nor did I ever see a movie trailer of Serenity. Only years much later did I hear about these shows. I then bought the DVD's and enjoy them from time to time. So, wish that there were more of them. Would have been nice to support them when they were up and running. I guess many people didn't know about it either. When talking to others about space movies and their scenes. Many times, when mentioning FireFly. Some have never heard of it. Boy-O-boy did they ever lack in advertising.

At this point, after this long, the BEST thing to do would be a "reboot sequel" set after the movie Serenity like 15-20 years... and dealing with the fallout about the revelation the Reavers were made by the Alliance... And seeing how the verse moved on in light of that. THAT would allow a new crew, a new ship, AND still have the chance for the OG crew to cameo here or there for fan service.

@@joeslater2390 I don't think so - I mean the storyline and "universe" of Firefly is pretty generic; what made it work was the characters and the way they all interacted with each other. The chances of catching lightning in a bottle like that again is slim to none.

Firefly's schedule was off too due to it being bumped constantly for a series of baseball games. I think it was playoffs for the World Series or something like that. Due to that inconsistent schedule it had a hard time getting traction in ratings.

Impossible to make anything good in the current "climate". So better off re-watching the original material from time to time. I bought the series on DVD, after procrastinating for a long time, and was positively surprised. The cancellation of "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" will however be the number one item in "The Great Book of Grudges". But have no fear, this also deserve a spot on the first page! Also just remembered that Summer Glau was present in both of these TV-series. What a strange coincidence... !

Glau got lots of work in the 00's doing sci fi stuff. She was also in the show Alphas which was an attempt at a more realistic version of how the government deals with X-Men style mutants. Also canceled before its time.

I'm on the side of "Yes, reboot the series", and with Joss Whedon. However, there have been a fair few interviews which focus on Whedon's treatment of some of the cast of his different productions. First I'll say I do believe them. I've worked myself for a creative person who treats some folks like gold and others like crap and this has all the earmarks. I especially believe Charisma, who went on to produce a series examining abuse in depth. So here's what I would really like to see: Joss needs to swallow his pride, and make an apology to the people he has mistreated (even if only allegedly). He's not being sued, they really deserve an apology, and a friend of mine once told me in business, apologize first, and then work out a solution. It works for other situations too. You may not feel "at fault", and you may not be, but it opens the door and the other people may just say "there's no need" or what have you. The only way to know is to do it. So, come clean, tell everyone (fans too) you're sorry, and then roll up your sleeves and start making great stories again. My two cents...

There was also the movie "Browncoats: Redemption" that was an in-universe story that didn't involve Serenity or its crew. I remember watching it at a Comic convention in Chicago. I would've loved to see the universe continue even without the original crew (like Star Trek got to do w/ TNG and DS9).

X-Files destroyed so many great sci-fi shows by insanely outperforming the Friday Night Death Slot. Fox suddenly.thought, "Oh... we just need to put a sci-fi show in that slot and we'll make money. We can tell, because it happened once, and as TV studio execs, that's the maximum number of data points that we can consider at one time."

Another sci-fi series killed by network shuffling of the schedule is Defying Gravity. The first 5 episodes were somewhat interesting, but hardly anyone was watching because ABC appeared to be actively attempting to kill it off. I bought the DVDs of the whole first season including 4 outstanding final episodes that did not air on US broadcast tv. The last episode may be one of the most astounding episodes I have ever seen.

Killing off Wash and Shepherd Book in the Serenity movie were two railroad spike-sized nails in the coffin of Firefly. Those deaths made it excruciatingly clear that Firefly Is gone.

"Suits" are practical business types and notoriously do not get sci-fi - and they hate to pay for the special effects. The Wild Wild West (steam-punk before the name) was a hit, but the Suits hated it, and took the opportunity to cancel it over its "violence".

They need to continue it with a radio series. If those are successful, then bring back the live series with everyone but Book. Everyone will be much older by then, but we could follow their kids / 2nd generation if the stories were compelling enough. Simon and Kaylee could have some really brilliant kids, one of which repairs Serenity. Another is a super medic and the third is a hacker. The first episode, they find out that Mal and Inara's family have been kidnapped by the Alliance. The thing practically writes itself.

Animation is the way to do this, especially with what AI will be able to do with the medium in a couple of years. The actors' age doesn't matter. The cost is lower. In the near future, you probably won't even need the actors, just permission to use their voice likeness. This and The Sarah Connor Chronicles both would be fantastic to bring back as an animated series or feature. The expectations are also lower with animation. It doesn't have to be a grand slam into the bleachers to be considered successful.

My understanding is; Fox basically, Low-Key "cut" Firefly "off at the knees". With terrible, almost non-existent marketing & all the other reasons listed in the video. They (supposedly) did this because they wanted Joss focused ENTIRELY on his money-making, Buffy series & Angel series. They (reluctantly) approved Firefly because it was a "passion project" of his and they didn't want to risk pissing Joss off! But then they subtly sabotaged it to get him back to working on what THEY wanted him to work on! As much as I LOVE Firefly, I don't really WANT anything NEW to come out! No remakes, revivals, or whatever and it is TOO LATE for any new seasons! The time for that to happen would have been 10 or 15 years ago! (the cast are no longer "spring chickens" anymore after all) Oh, and what we have is HALF a Season! NOT a full Season! (this was network TV, and seasons were about 23-24 episodes long!)

The television series 'Firefly', starring Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, was canceled too soon, people weren't watching, and it was weird. They are the super-future where traveling the stars is routine (like riding a horse and wagon in the American frontier), but they are always suffering the downside of life. Firefly needed a look over of the background story.

Fox fumbled this ball spectacularly, sadly. Firefly was lightning in a bottle. I still rewatch the one (and only) season and spin-off movie quite regularly, but it was a missed opportunity. Trying to recapture the original magic again would be a huge mistake.

But Wash and The Shepherd died in Serenity... reviving dead characters is very tricky to pull off, and if it's all happening in the past, the actors have aged considerably. Don't get me wrong, I would love more Firefly, but I don't see it being done without creating a mess with the story arc of the series.

That is true. Fox had unrealistic performance demands, target audience, and they changed the schedule multiple times so current viewers couldn't watch it. I think they just didn't like joss, and giving him a show only to sabotage it was their way of saying they tried when they really didn't. I also heard that at that time fox had been hyper focused on its own internal feedback and formulaic approach to audience growth. At this time fox had a focus on the older 25-30+ crowd and wanted to get younger audiences, but had absolutely no idea how to do that or how they behaved, so when they didn't meet their market projection they panicked and cut bait. They actually did multiple times during this era, because the execs forgot they were a TV network studio that produces entertainment.

The chemistry of the original cast would be impossible to reproduce. It was a one off stroke of genius piece of art. You can't have Venus de Milo v 2.0.
