This is a video of the first start up on my late Grandaddys J-3 Cub. I started it up on the same date (4-20) as what the picture on the luggage lid was made when my Grandaddy did a maiden flight after he restored it in 1975-76.
This was a BIG day for me as well as my friends and family. We had about 5 or 6 cameras rolling at the same time so I tried to add a little from each angle in there. Hopefully you all will like it. Lol. I’m not good at editing videos as you can tell. Lol. Thanks for watching!

My grandfather was a "flying farmer," they flew Jenny's and just about antthing else they could get airborn. A group of them started an airport in Auburn, NY. When I was a little kid, he used to fly his J3 (equipped with skiis) to my house a couple of miles away, land in a field out front and take me for a ride. Once he came dressed as Santa. What times those were! That J3 of your grandaddy's is just beautiful!!

My dad owned two J3 Cubs. He built and sold many manifold heaters so the plane could be flown in the winter. He also built another fuel tank that was positioned over and behind the rear passenger seat. This made the J3 a more versatile and allowed it to fly greater distances. Thanks for restoring a J3 cub. Memories as a child in the passenger seat!!🥰

Love how the test stand is a forklift. This reminds me of the time my Dad rebuilt a Taylorcraft BC-12 in our single car garage in Panhandle Texas. The fuselage was recovered but the bare-bone wings were still hanging from the rafters. Dad took me out for a wingless taxi ride around town. And I mean all over town. Everybody smiled and waved. Had many great flights in it after it was finished. This video is a wonderful tribute to your Grandpa. I have a feeling he's watching from above.

Thank you Neil! Yea sir ultralights can be pretty risky for sure. No offense but this is a REal CUB. Not a Cubby. 😂 A Cubby is a Wag Aero version of a REal Cub. 🤣 But yeah I been restoring this old girl for 4 years now. And I mean all by myself. Except for a SMALL hand full of parts my cousin Rex repaired for me. But she’s definitely part of the family because we’ve had her for over 50 years. Every since 1968. Thanks again for watching! I was thinking of a time in the middle 60s when I soloed my first J3 Cub. Del Rentzel Airport, Nacogdoches, TX. Loved flying around couple hundred feet up over the countryside with the door flap open. Just loved it. We had a couple grass strips and I purposely let the grass get a little high and would make wheel landings and start the wheels rolling on the tops of the grass. Such fun. You have a really beautiful Cub. I know you're proud of it.

My first air plane ride was in one of those but a 4 seater, 1963 when i was 13 yrs old. cost $6.00 for me and 6 each for my 2 cousins at Griswold's air port in Madison CT. Oldman Griswold would slide his cigar band up about half way and off we go. We saved up our allowance's for a month to go up . I think he was in his mid 60's back then and had been flying since his late teens. what a thrill it was to go up so high and fly over my home town and house in Guilford, CT. You did a fine job on that one.

Brings back memories of my 48 Aeronca Chief. Got it in the early 70's but only had her for 5 years. The previous owner had painted the cowl (inside the windshield gloss black like I see you have done). The gloss black was a PITA anytime the sun was shining as it reflected like a mirror. I highly suggest you change your plan and paint the upper inside cowl flat black, it will make flying on sunny days so much more enjoyable and safer. Love the work you have put into this restoration and I am truly sorry your Grandaddy didn't get to see the final project through (But I am sure he is looking down with a smile).

I greatly appreciate that. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have put WELL Over $50k in this old girl and I seriously wouldn’t take a Million dollars for it right now. That’s da Gods honest truth.

I want to say THANK YOU so much for watching! I really appreciate the kind words as well. This airplane is BIG part of my late Grandfather. Every time I look at it I see my Granddaddy.
