Music video /montage with ballet dancer Sergei Polunin (Сергей Полунин) as a reflection and response to "Dancer" (a biographical documentary released in 2017).
Song: "Mad World" cover by Michael Andrews & Gary Jules; originally performed by Tears for Fears
Original Videos: "Dancer" documentary; RB Sleeping Beauty interview with Sergei Polunin & Lauren Cuthbertson; RB World Stage Demonstration; Stick Figure's "Fragile Balance" documentary;
***
DISCLAIMER/ABOUT THE VIDEO: Nobody's life can be completely summarized in an 80 minute documentary, let alone a 3 minute video. This video is not an attempt to summarize Sergei Polunin or to assume a familiarity with his thoughts or feelings. It is simply my way of thinking out loud and responding to the emotional storm of a time in Sergei's life that was so strongly captured in "Dancer" and in other interviews from that time period. It reflects my own thoughts and feelings and is my own response to that young man wrestling with his past, present, and future. Most of all, it is my response to someone who often seemed to be looking for someone to say, "I hear you. I see you (not just a dancer). You're valuable for who you are, not for what you do. You're not alone."
As someone who cares about Sergei very much from my far away corner of the world, I'm thankful for the people he has found along the way who have been a safe haven for him. And I hope he knows there are many who hear him and who value him as a person with his own wishes, hopes, dreams, and feelings that are about more than just dance. While dance is an essential part of who he is and a necessary means of expressing himself, it isn’t all he is. To truly thrive, he needs more than the type of life he had before. And if that means he doesn't dance as often as some would like, or in the types of performances they prefer, I hope we all remember that each dance, each performance, comes at a cost for him. And no art, no matter how rare or beautiful, is worth more than the life of the artist who creates it.

LYRICS:
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world, mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world, mad world
Enlarging your world
Mad world

I read your disclaimer and I totally agree with you! We are more than what we show, what we do...and we are all on a path, a journey and we usually change along the way. And that is OK. For me, Polunin conveys beauty, energy, passion, pain and vulnerability. Love him and loved this video! Thank you for sharing!

@@IndiaInk you're welcome and fyi im not even a ballet fan. I respect and admire anyone in the arts who is exceptional, no matter what the medium. When i was a senior in high school a girl I was dating dragged me to see The Turning Point and I was just blown away by Baryshnikov; like everyone else in the 70s. I guess Sergei has the same level of talent. Am i right?
@IndiaInk
@IndiaInk 3 жыл бұрын
Although I respected the art and might briefly enjoy watching a solo variation once very few years I was not a ballet fan until a friend showed me a video of Sergei Polunin last year. It would still be more accurate to say I'm a Polunin fan who is learning to appreciate ballet as a whole. At the moment I've seen a lot of his ballet performances and enjoy them, but have only a slowly growing interest in seeing performances that don't have him in them. But certain dancers I've been introduced to through watching him have piqued my interest. Baryshnikov is the exception to the rule, since he's the dancer I've been most familiar with my entire life and is the only one who isn't Sergei that I've watched full ballets of. Baryshnikov is astonishing and exceptional. And yes, Sergei has frequently been compared to Baryshnikov in respects to talent and charisma. Although it's always a bit unfair to compare dancers, since their personalities can't help but influence their work and they are two very different people. However, when it comes to raw talent and ability, Sergei has been recognized by peers, professionals, and critics as one of the best talents of his generation.

@richardcleveland8549 While he still has his own personal struggles and pains, I don’t see him as tormented or anywhere near as troubled now as he seemed to be before he met his wife, Elena, in 2019. (After the times in his life depicted in this video, which was my response to watching “Dancer”, which depicts his life up until around 2015. And at that time he did often seem very tormented.) Elena and his children seem to be a very stabilizing presence in his life and give him the love, support and family he was missing.
