@@PamBoehmeSimon I have seen the whole of this ballet about half a dozen times over the last 20 years and each time the choreography of this last scene is slightly different but every time it is equally compelling. And I have read several historical books on the incident at Mayerling and during one of my trips to Vienna I went to visit the Mayerling hunting lodge where this took place. To me it is the most compelling ballet and the most astonishing choreography of any ballet I have seen and no other ballet can be compared to it for showing with movements the inner characters and torment .of the protagonists. Kenneth McMillan’s choreography is out of this world and it must give huge satisfaction to any dancer to be able to bring it to life. If you are interested there are a few clips on YT of McMillan himself rehearsing the original cast for the first production of the ballet way back in the 1970s. I found them very interesting and you may do so also.

This was, without a doubt, exquisite. I needed to watch this video five times before commenting, because I simply could not find the words to respond to it. And honestly, I'm not sure that I can now. I didn't see this ballet with its original music, and I now cannot imagine it being danced to a full, grand orchestra. The dance is raw and broken, and deserves the sense of mourning that the minimalist music gives it. After rewatching it once I'd researched the Mayerling Incident, I am only more bewitched by this masterpiece, and the display of this fatal love scene. So often, our society and pop culture turn physical intimacy into a vulgar and cheap party trick, but this dance made it seem almost sacred. Thank you for making this- I absolutely loved watching it.
@PamBoehmeSimon7 жыл бұрын
Dearest Lizzy, you see it. You feel it. You "get it" completely. "Raw and broken" ... I absolutely adore that description. And "sacred"! You have a beautiful way with words. You are most welcome, and thank YOU for watching and so, so eloquently commenting. Your contribution via your profound comment to this exquisite and tragic story is much appreciated.
@nicolehourcade5 жыл бұрын
Lizzy T of course the reality of Mayerling was not romantic but more political The young Maria Vetsera was involved in a love story without any knowledge of the political involvement of his lover announcing a sad ending. The character of the Kroonprintz Rudolf is very interesting, especially with Polounin showing the ambiguity of this man clever, frustrated by his father the emperor Frantz Joseph and in admiration for the only woman he loved, his mother Sissi

@robinavalyn95135 жыл бұрын
I read your description for this vid, & completely agree with your choice to move to minimalist music. One of the highlights of your work IS your choice of music. Removing the ”pomp & circumstance” typical of classical ballet scoring frees up a huge space for the viewer. Less grey matter is needed to process the music, so we can concentrate on the dancers/dance. We can see them AS dance, an embodiment of both the verb & the noun. “I am the dancer & the dance; I am the singer & the song” (an actual quote but I cant remember the source). Your technique also reminds me of the great Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa, particularly his movie “Ran.” There is a long battle scene (feudal Japan), very violent, lots of death & fire, lots of slo-mo. But what you hear is a soft classical piece, minor keys, no other sounds. It was startling when I first saw it, but it is very effective at concentrating the viewers’ attention on what they see. Your eye for composition does the same thing. Marvelous!
@PamBoehmeSimon5 жыл бұрын
I am humbled at such a comparison. Thank you so very much. Quite often I have to defend my "messing with" the music, but it is fascinating to me to see what happens when I do! Thank you again, and again.
