Prokofiev is freaking brilliant. Austere, harsh, imposing, yet gorgeous, love this piece. The criss crossing and diagonal movements of the gendered groups and the harshness of the horns makes me think of a living chess board. Fighting and strategy illustrated in an abstract modern sense with cold stone pieces.

He came to the US and wrote a lot of scores for movies in the 40's and 50's, I believe. Sometimes when you watch an old movie you will hear background music you will immediately notice has his fingerprints on it.

Prokofiev has been on my shortlist of favorite composers since I first heard “Peter and the Wolf” at age 4, with Sterling Holloway narrating. Even Prokofiev’s surname sounded like music to me at that age, the first time I remember being able to hear individual instruments as part of the whole. Prokofiev was so versatile, and his orchestrations so rich and unique, positively lush sounding!

Took the words out of my mouth! I found Prokofiev through watching the Peter and the Wolf cartoon as a toddler. It's what made me fall in love with bassoon. Then I fell in love marching to three oranges. I got to see his Violin Concerto No. 1 performed live early this year too.

Totally, I always go to a ball hosted by the nobility in full metal jacket... 😂. tbf, I saw a great version of Prokofiev's R&J a few years ago now, and all the men had Kendo sticks which they beat into the ground on the beat - it really worked. Very... butch 😳

@@ub85zwq They are. Just not the part of the beat *you're* listening to. The emphasis in this choreography is on the up beat where their knee is raised, not when the foot is placed down. I suspect it's deliberately less obvious to avoid the predictable stompy choreography that often goes with Prokofiev's version... 🤔

I think Nureyev danced Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo & Juliet before creating is own coreography. Nureyev and Fonteyn were the original cast in MacMillan's coreography.
