i came here looking for a modern person’s reaction to this complex composition and it’s interesting how the song is so melodic and calm to the casual listener but to a musician it’s so surprising and frustrating 🤣 All the chord changes are maybe blurred by the lyrical content? btw, came here after watching Beato’s breakdown too ^_^

Great song. Sergio Mendes is the older man playing the keyboards ... but he's the big-name bandleader, so he gets the lead credit over the singers, sorta like how Santana gets lead credit although he doesn't do the singing on his albums. Btw, this is a shortened version of the song, possibly for time constraints on a hits-countdown show. The middle verse sung by the female is missing. This comment is correct. Joe & Leeza left a cassette of this song in Sergios mail box and he and wife (Gracinha) asked this couple over to hear them sing in person. Sergio loved the rendition and the three of them recorded it immediately, Sergio went to Herb Alpert to have it released through A&M, it shot up to number one on the charts and the rest is history.

"Alibis" from this same era was another Soft Rock/Quiet Storm classic. The chorus "I'm sure your alibis are watertight - And you're where you have to be tonight" is pretty sassy.

Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66 was one of my favorite bands of the 60s. BTW, Sergio is the one playing the piano. You probably know "The Girl From Ipanema" which was probably there biggest hit in the US.

Joe Pizzulo and Leeza Miller on vocals. Wow, they cut out the 2nd verse in which Leeza sings! That sucks! Make sure to listen to the full version of this song. This song has been noted to be the most complex pop song ever written. It modulates through key/chord changes at practically every couple of verses/choruses. I've always been amazed at the song chord structure, as well as the entire album.

Sergio Mendes is the guy on keyboard. Back in the '60s, he had a group called Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 (or Brasil '67 or '68 or whatever year it was). They did some fantastic songs. Check out their version of the classic ballad "The Look of Love." It'll give you tingles.

Lead singer was so incredible but unknown as a solo artist, this is one of the few times you’re gonna hear a male vocal do the lead part above and beyond the female part. And how about that modulation, changing keys like they did toward the end? And how about that great synthesizer solo by Sergio, imagine the versatility of this great Brazilian musician who practically introduced Bossanova to America, way back in 1966? But wait, according to one “music” reviewer, It’s only the storyline here that matters? Imagine reviewing movies the same way………

Sergio Mendes was just the pianist on this song (as in many others). Pizzulo and Miller sang this song as a duet in 1983. Mendes is a bandleader, and not really a singer. He just gets top billing because of his music status.

There is a missing verse. He sang the first verse, but her verse is not here. "Looking back now it seems so clear, I had it all when you were here. Oh you gave it all and I took it for granted". I know who Sergio Mendez was.....but I've heard this song so many hundreds of times and NEVER heard his name mentioned. I always thought it was James Ingram or somebody. Those damned 'easy listening' radio stations put stuff like this on their playlists ( ALWAYS the SAME 40 or 50 songs.....year in & year out....over & OVER, until you want to shoot your radio...).....and then NEVER name the artists.
