just want to say to you guys let's just give Jr. credit for being honest. He could have been fake and tell a big ass lie but he didn't. If he didn't have a good relationship with his father let him be real and tell his story. We are always on the outside looking in and think all these celebrities are perfect and don't do know wrong. What you see in magazines and TV are fake realities of their real lives. He's trying to tell you what was going on and how his dad really was so respect that.

That interview was so revealing. Sergio was one of my favorites going back to the 60s; it saddens me to think that he dealt with so much bitterness right up until the end. I understand it, but holding on to it can really keep you back. I wonder if he realized how many bodybuilding fans thought the world of him and believed that he should have won the 'O' in '72. Anyway, his son seems to be a very bright guy and I hope he finds the success he's working for.
@BruteStrength993 жыл бұрын
Lots of athletes were like that. Joe Frazier's son said his daddy held on to his hatred of Muhammad Ali right up to the end. Referee Richard Steele said the late Marvin Hagler wouldn't even take a picture with Ray Leonard or him at the Hall Of Fame 2 years ago. Still bitter about that fight in 87

This is probably one of the most interesting stories in bodybuilding. Very real and honest person we have here. I was a NPC judge in Florida when Jr. came and competed for the 1st time. I was introduced to him at a show in Pensacola by a masters competitor who filled me in on the strained relationship between Jr and his father. It's this kind of human interest that could make bodybuilding have more mass appeal. Would be great to d a documentary about Jr.

Wow, an eye opening interview about Sergio Oliva from his son. Hopefully he can create his own legacy. There seems to be a lot of bodybuilders lately who are disgruntled with the direction taken by modern bodybuilding competitions, from the call-outs to the posing, to the judging, etc. I think just like there is a new generation of bodybuilders, so is there a new generation of fans. And the fans (IMO) are a driving force that will affect the sport of bodybuilding like never before.

@terrystrand8 жыл бұрын
Sergio Senior knew what a world of bullshit the IFBB was and is and always will be. He wanted Junior to excel in something besides the life of drugs and spending a whole life in the weight room. I wonder how much money Junior made so far in bodybuilding vs. how much he spent on bodybuilding. IFBB bodybuilding is nothing more than a money-losing, expensive 'profession'. Not hating on anybody, but if you've been in this forever like I have you do understand why Senior told his son to get the hell out of the chemical circus of 'pro' bodybuilding which leads to nowhere.

I met Sergio back in 86. Had the fortune to had worked with a very good friend of him from Chicago. The guy was pleasant and was very informative. I learned a lot from a long conversation that I and a friend had with him. I did however, realize that Sergio Sr did had somewhat of a huge ego and to be honest I don't blame him, because when you are just a person the comes from nothing, and all of a sudden you become this largest than life figure, your ego goes out of wack. Anyways that is the experience I had with his dad. Good interview

Salute to Sergio Jr. for giving us the truth about his Dad. Sergio Sr. was a great bodybuilder who must have known up front that he would face racial and ethnic discrimination in the 1960's and early 70's, so it was monumental for him to have won Mr. Olympia multiple times in that era. For that reason, it baffles me that Sergio thought he would be more popular than Arnold, who personified the image that the majority of Americans identified with. He was fortunate to have been offered the role in Predator, which he should have taken for his own good. Given all the testimony I've heard on Sergio Sr., including provoking his wife to defend herself with a gun, I'm convinced he had deeper mental problems beyond just bitterness from the bias he experienced. He was not accepting reality for what it was.

I think he was being diplomatic here. The report at the time said Sergio hit his wife and she ran to the bedroom to get his service revolver. He followed her and hit her again and she then shot him 5 times. It was in the Chicago Tribune July 25th 1986. Men who are abusive like that rarely only do it once. However much I admire him as a bodybuilder, as a person he was seriously flawed.
