Just today I learned of a 4 year old girl, in Palo Alto, CA whom found 2 colonies of stingless bees originating from Brazil. Their story of survival is truly fascinating! Stingless bees are so cool! Are yours the same type that build in an upward spiral, when left in the wild? The honey pots are fascinating! Their irregular shapes make me want to see many, many frames, to try to see a pattern in the randomness of their shapes, sizes, and arrangements. Wow. Love you! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

I’m so excited! I’m deathly allergic to honey bees but I’ve always wanted a bee hive, I’ve only just found out that you can get stingless bee hives to keep at home! This will be my new research project hopefully leading to my very own hive!!!

Having just constructed and established no less than 5 hives on the "Powell Hive Box" design (slightly modified) - NOW you come up with this great idea! Appears it is back to the shed to construct some new honey supers on this new design AND work out how to incorporate my easy open lid modification! But all is not lost. I can easily convert the old supers into brood sections for new hives or splits.

I’m sorry ☺️. But the good thing is it’s easy to modify a Powell hive to take these. Are your hives all filled up with Bees yet?
@Michael_CS615

I started with 2 rescue hives split to 4 boxes. Very few bees were lost - the trick there is to do the collection early on a cold morning. They are very active after 4 weeks. I will have the new supers ready in time to swap on when it is time to try for some honey in due course. I don't want to disturb them at this point. Of the 5 mentioned, one is an eduction out in the country that I am told appears to be on-track after a slow start. I do have a 6th - in Cairns - where we are trying to get (probably) Tetragonula Clypearis to establish. They are reluctant! Might have to try some tricks.... or even mod the box (smaller inside?) - might have to go back to Cairns to supervise....

Mate! I couldn't agree more! They don't deserve to die for us. I was thinking that budding to propagate new hives instead of splitting.... This seems is the best way to go and not open them at all not for splitting and not for honey. This might just be the answer

Once you’ve finalized your design, this will not only allow people to harvest the honey with minimal bee losses, but it will also make the keeping of stingless bees more attractive to those who don’t have colonies yet

Thanks for writing that nice comment. Do you think many people don’t want to keep natives because honey is hard to get?
@samhiggins3840
@samhiggins3840 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - I have hives left with friends who won’t even attempt to harvest unless I am present despite teaching them. I also wonder if this will allow people to harvest more regularly as the pot damage is reduced and would make it easier for the colony to re-use pots and recycle excess honey. I also imagine this reduces risk of flooding brood and drowning bees where a larger super is used and harvested.

@@samhiggins3840 can the supers just be put back on hive without washing out all honey as all that residual honey may entice pests or is that only if split?

One question do this kind of bee live in all Australia or only in tropical regions like Queensland? Honeybees start to fly around 10°12° Celsius. What is the lowest temperature for stingless bees to get out and collecting Nektar. Can they survive in rigions with temperature +5°Celsius at night +15 ° at day in winter but we have also warmer or colder weather in winter but never frost. Why all this questions? I find them cute i like to have some hive in my beeyard in Southitaly Tropea. .
@australiannativebee3662
@australiannativebee3662 6 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for stopping by. These bees fly at 18 degrees centigrade. At this temperature they can happily collect nectar. Tetragonula carbonaria can live down to Sydney on the east coast but are happier in warmer climates. Our winters average at about 12-21 degrees with June seeing 10 degrees. If the hive has a good amount of pollen and nectar they sit inside the hive most of winter only coming out during the hottest part of the day for a few hours. I hope this helps you. 👍🏻

G'day from the Philippines. There are native bees here but I have no idea what type. I'll follow your instructions and build a hive. I have no no access to an existing hive but have seen them swarming. When I build the hive and place it in the garden is it likely the bees will colonise it or am I just dreaming.

Thanks. I am pushing my filipina to raise stingless bees on our little orchard. I hope that our native bees are of similar nature in their construction and this series super is a wonderful thing that you have found. I notice that in the Philippines, the honey is pasteurised. Some hobby bee keepers here in the USA, use a solar oven to separate wax, waist and honey. The box reaches 120*F and sort of pasteurises the honey as the wax is melted and honey and wax are filtered through paper towel. Would a similar thing work with the propolis honey pots? I mean, spin the honey in a hive gallon bucket DIY honey extractor, run the lot through the solar separator and bottle the remaining honey? Sorry for the long comment. It is my yankee ADD affliction. I bird dog every thing.

In South America there are a lot but I’m unsure how high up people have taken them. They probably wouldn’t survive in the snow. You do however have a tonne of solitary Bees that are masters of pollinators. Some much better than apis. I think you might be able to find out if anyone has them in the US. ?

So cool seeing them thank you for replying. Could not find anyone online that has them in the US. Looks like I’ll have to bring some in from South America and if I put them in Miami they will probably definetly grow on their own. Can I just get a queen and some attendants and start several colonies? . You are so lucky to help save these guys these tiny bees are so amazing
@australiannativebee3662
@australiannativebee3662 5 жыл бұрын
Generally what people buy is a whole colony of these. Queen , brood (eggs) and workers. There are only a few types of stingless Bees that will start without eggs on their own accord. So look for a colony with new eggs. This is a clear indication that there is a queen present within the colony. 👍🏻
