SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH MILWAUKEE PACKOUT STORAGE SYSTEM **I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!**

Vince, I would love to come analyze how you use your tools and how to help make it more efficient. Maybe, when I'm bored and need something to do I can come out on my own dime. I actually enjoy trying to find ways to be more efficient with tools, and I've tried some strange things sometimes to make it work. That bottom rolling box on the Packout is a beast to get into, and your concern is very much valid. I'm playing around with the Packout system myself, and have thought about a couple of options and will entertain other ideas down the road. I agree that moving these boxes off and then back on can be a pain in the arse. One solution (perhaps short-term until something better) is to buy more than one 3-piece system. I have bought two, plus some extra items. And if I need to get down to lower boxes, i simply take boxes off the top and then snap them into the top box of the other stack right next to the first. Not the best solution perhaps, but it works for now, and by doing that, I don't have to immediately stack them back onto the first stack, because they're still locked into the other stack and ready to wheel away if needed. Another plan i have is to purchase a cargo trailer. And when I've bought one, I'm going to customize the inside for efficient use. And one of the things I want to do is install shelving and then buy a bunch of those very overly-priced Packout black mounting plates ($29.99) and install them onto the shelves for my Packout Boxes. By doing this, each Packout box sits on it's own on the shelves. And then, I will "build" my stack according to the job and the tools needed (either on the job or the night before). This will require being hyper-organized and really putting some thought into what does and doesn't work, and to not give up when something isn't working, and instead, just tweak and tweak until I can get it perfect. Based on any particular job at hand, we should have a pretty good idea about what tools we need (including some leeway for a few extras that may or may not be needed, depending on the more specific requirements of that particular job. And so, the plan would be to be able to open up the trailer and take only the boxes needed, stack them onto the main roller box and roll down the ramp. To make it the most effective, it might be that the bottom box would be used for things that you probably don't need, but would like on hand in case you do. And quite frankly, that other overly-priced piece, the Tool Storage Crate (for the insane price of $40.25), might actually be handy. I could stack the boxes I need and then the final topper could be the empty crate where I could then drop in my driver, saw and whatever other power tool I need. Any particular task shouldn't really need that many power tools. So then, I'm off to the races. I roll the box to the location of the work, maybe pull the top crate and set it aside, and then get to work. The other stuff I know I'll need will now be in the top box and easiest to access. And the lower the box, the least likely it will be that I'll need what's in it. It's possible that the biggest bottom box is rendered useless other than the wheels, so i can brainstorm some different solutions, including modifying the box so that I can access the contents from the side, or maybe I do a mod where that box becomes the battery charging station. If the bottom box were to be modified for side access, it might be that you would have to store one or two less tools in it to make it easier, because if you're cramming as much in there as you can now with top access, it's going to be nearly impossible to get tools back in there properly with side access. I'm also going to experiment with designing some pieces on my 3D printer. It might take me awhile, because I don't really have to go work so there is no rush, but if you're interested, I'll keep you updated on my progress.

I've got the crates, and use them just for that purpose. Always sits on top. I also have a 4 wheeled cart I use to carry around materials and such for job I'm doing, so I can bring large amounts of big connectors and couplings that would be wasteful to store in the packout system. The packout boxes amazingly fit almost perfect into the top of it and allows for easy access into the bottom big tool box.

Ive been watching your channel recently and thank you for your insight to these products. I held off for a while, but recently home depot had a one day internet sale on 4 piece Fuel tools sets( drill, impact, mini sawsal and angle grinder with two 5.0 batteries and charger and the large pack out rolling box for $399. The package stated that it was $1040 worth of tools. The deals are out there and your right $279 for just the boxes are insane. When I was able to purchase all these products for $130 more.

I love Milwaukee tools, however I actually have the Ridgid modular tool boxes and have used Kaizen foam to rig it the way that works for me. FYI the Ridgid boxes in my opinion are the most durable and flexible for the money.

I am just getting into the business nothing like full time. I looked at packout and just couldn't justify the price. I ended up going with the craftsman a la carte offering. The main box is 60 bucks the add on boxes are 20 to 40 bucks. Their new tool sets have the latches built in so everything connects securely. My 5 cordless tools fit all my hardware goes in the organizer. Hand tools go into a technicians box.

I recently upgraded to the Packout about a month ago. I also had the Husky rolling bag to put all of my tools in too. I found the 3 piece Packout for $200, but I also bought the 10” Tote to put all of my hand tools in because it fits perfectly in my rolling box. I bought an additional large box to keep my power tools in since one box wasn’t enough. Even though I did spend $300+ for whole package it keeps everything organized and I don’t have mismatched tools boxes to take on the job site. Plus the Husky bag can only stack a certain amount of tool boxes.

I foot travel to much doing service work and just wish BIG RED would make a medium wheeled 20" packout service bag. No one want to be all lop sided carrying totes all day. It's bad for your back.

Vince I've just retooled my truck with a huge packout system. I suspected this problem, what I've done is I'm in the high end kitchen business. And I have a huge lift on my truck . So rather than over loading the wheels I strap it to my dolly. I realize not everyone has this option. But I think this will work long term for me . It's still easier than carrying a bunch of bags and organizers. But I've been watching your videos and learning your scores . And take your advice .

@VCG packout is still the best offering out there in my humble carpenters opinion. That being said there is absolutely room for improvement.....my biggest gripe Vince is the wheels on the big wheel box....😡 wheels on two separate boxes went “off the rim” idk if it is heat/cold ,heat/cold that affects the materials or what. BUT my solution was a slightly longer axle and some tractor supply replacement tires.

Got a 3 pc Packout and works great. Got a 2nd Bottom Roller case w/ a 2nd top box w/my m12 Drill & Impact Driver (which rocks). But this stuff stays mainly in the van. Got a similar soft sided roller than mostly comes in to job. Tough to find one system that works for every situation.

I've done construction off and on for over a decade, mostly on. It's nice when you see other professionals give honest opinions on something, especially anyone on KZbin with sponsors. I love Husky tools and bags, wish they made power tools. And I like Milwaukee and Dewalt power tools. I like buying better quality tools, so I don't have to buy them again. And those are my preferred brands. And even the new Rigid gen 5 has impressed me. So it's good to see someone who likes a brand that much, and still you say don't buy it at that price.

Husky’s 22” connect rolling system is an amazing deal for the price. I use it everyday in new construction and it rolls over everything mud/dirt/ large gravel without issue. 1 year of hard use and it’s still going strong. It also fits under my tundra’s bed cover

I’m an electrician on a 20 man crew. We got 3 pack outs about 5 Dewalt box sets and 4 guys with Rigid. They all agree that pack out is the best.... especially if you’ve got stairs

I’m a glazier on a crew of about 25 no one has packout yet all either dewalt or rigid so I can’t speak on packout just in my opinion rigid is durable water resistant and fairly organized works well for me for 3 years now

I didn't buy the packout boxes back in December because 1) I missed the sale, 2) it wouldn't fit in my house in my limited space, and 3) as you mention, it seemed cumbersome. I liked the Packout soft-side tote, but, like Vince, I wasn't made of money. So I improvised: I noticed the $29 Husky 15 inch soft-side tote had 5 feet on the bottom that nested very nicely into the top plate of the low-profile Packout 5-compartment organizer (The half-wide). 5 Bolts through the tote's feet into the lid of the low profile Packout organizer firmly attached both to each other. That not only gave me storage below the tote, (I can still open the box to get access) but it added a Packout bottom attachment plate that, in turn, allows me to attach it to other Packout boxes. I bought two of the standard height 5-parts organizers, (also half-wide) so my tote assembly can snap onto those. So my stack is half the width of the 'standard' Packout boxes. I hadn't thought about it, but if I needed to wheel it around, I'd just use my standard folding hand-truck I got from Uline. I don't think I'd need to get a Packout plate to mount it to the hand truck, as a bungee should hold it fine during wheelie ops, but I suppose you can get the Packout mount plate if you wanted to if you didn't mind the hand-truck not being able to fold up. Edit: I just noticed the newly released Packout compact tool box that is also half as wide as the standard Packout boxes, so this will fit my stack as well. Perhaps a rolling half-wide tool box is coming soon?

Big fan from Australia here. I bought the packout system (rolling toolbox, large toolbox, 2 half organisers, 1 full size organiser and the half size tote) a while back because I modernise elevators. It's great most of the time and cumbersome the rest of the time, let me tell you why. I change locations many times in the building and we actually have a storage room, so loading and unloading from a vehicle isn't a problem. The large wheels are great for going up stairs, and crossing over the elevator threshold. The system locks well, very durable and have quite a few configurations, but that's where the positives end. The rolling tool box doesn't have 4 wheels, this makes lugging nearly 80kg of tools around the place quite tiring because you HAVE to lean the stack over and then push or pull it wherever you need it. This could be fixed by having some good swivel wheels on the front. The rolling toolbox wheels do get flat spots on them when it stays stationary for a couple of days, not a big problem, but it is noticeable. Dragging all your tools out of the rolling toolbox is annoying, I wish there was a supplied organisation kit. Would really like someone to finally bring out a box that have stackable draws to eliminate the unstacking and restacking of every box you have. There is nowhere to store a spirit level and no customisable internal organisation kits. This box is not made for all trades, definitely not metal workers. I am aware that I can make something to organise the tools internally, but 8 don't have the time to do it. Edit: the tote annoys me. It's so rigid and tight that it's difficult to use ALL the pockets it provides.

I started off with the dewalt tool boxes... I loved them, until I discovered ONE flaw that dewalt shares with the Milwaukee. The handle on the bottom box sticks out too high, my bed cover won't close. I had to fold up the bed cover which left everything in my truck bed exposed to the elements and theft... I ended up switching to the Ridgid boxes. The handle goes down lower and let's my bed cover close... Just thought I would share this for anyone with a bed cover that is looking for a tool box system.

It's a Mobil a system it supposed to pack up and move out Vicente softside move out system out in Texas Florida you have no time to weather changing on a outdoor service call when all my tools exposed to elements. I have 10 minutes tops before it starts boring cats and dogs on top of me and expensive test equipment water proof yes absolutely. Heavy yes heavy material cost money my man light is less material cheaper obviously great vid don't get mis understood you did hit some great target points every application is different my man but overall great to discuss topics about tools and with others who appreciate them to put bread 🍞 on the table to feed our kids and love ones God bless brother

I love the packout and scored it for $157.50 during the holiday season. I, like you have other mobile storage options besides packout when I don't need that big of a storage system. I am going to get the husky when the price goes down because of the size and mobility. The one thing I've learned is none of these are perfect for every job. So the more options we have the better. So I'll use whatever I'll need for the project I'm working on.

Vince, i fully agree at retail of $279 and yet $199 is still a bit high. But for lash points, grab handles, and ease of locking together it is a great system. Something else on negative is that main box handle does not go down lower. It stand over the height of my truck bed so cannot use my cover so only rides and locks up inside the rear passenger floor.

Vince. I agree with ALOT of what you are saying. I’m a service plumber Unstacking to get the the box you need is a super pain. I think it really depends on your job. I do a fair about of service callls to condos on the ocean multiple floor units. Elevators. And what not. I would not trade my pack out for any amount of money. To be able to put. My grinder. Copper cutter. M12 pvc cutter. Screw gun Some packout clear lid organizers with my copper fittings Soft tote with all my hand tools and go up 18 floors and not have to come back I just couldn’t go back to how I use to do it before pack out

Hey Vince I have been using the pack out system for a year now and I have no complaints. I am finally organized and I no longer have an issue with employees not putting my tools away properly. Also I am no longer have tools come up missing makes it very easy to keep track of my tools at end of the day. Also when I'm working by myself it saves me a ton of time. It use to take at least 15 minutes to bring in all my different tools and bags now it takes me less then 5 minutes to bring my tools in and less then 5 to load back into my truck. Also I can fit all 3 pieces locked together in the back seat of my truck on 1 side and my pack out tool bag behind drivers seat. The pack out has been a god send for me and I think $279.00 is a small price to pay to keep me organized and all the time it has saved me. Every sub that I work with has went out and bought the pack out after seeing mine

Vince - love my packout for handy man missions. I do have to load & unload them to get them into my pick up truck. My #1 surprise is when I left them loaded with tools - the wheels developed flat spots. I contacted Milwaukee & they sent me new wheels, but I now place the bottom packout on an 1/8” piece of laminate & it keeps the weight off the wheels.

This is why we just decided to set up 6’x12’ cargo trailers with full custom interior storage setup for our renovations business. No load and unload the truck everyday. We have been pulling the cargo setup for 3-1/2 years now and its awesome. We have everything we could possibly need on the trailer, and then just pull out the tools etc needed for that days tasks. We each have a soft side bag for basic everyday tools....impact, tape, hammer, screwdriver etc., but all of our other tools remain on the trailer. Circular saw, jig saw, compound miter saw, reciprocating saw, oscillating saw, router, demo tools, and we also have brute tubs labeled for each specific trade....paint, carpentry, tile, drywall, plumbing, electrical etc. Ive tried these various pack out type systems, but they just are user friendly on a day to day basis. We do have some components of the systems, but not as a single comprehensive set up

We are currently working on a 59 unit apartment building and the packout is acting like my trailer. Yes its heavy but for getting all my tools from kitchen to kitchen it's great (And we have onsite storage rooms). If i had to load it in and out of a truck every day (not so good). I feel this system is definitely designed with commercial/ large projects in mind. I won't be using this in a residential application. That's why i have a construction trailer.

HD has a deal on specific Milwaukee hand tools. I got the 15" packout tote yesterday for under $80 with discount. I also like the Milwaukee fiberglass handle 19oz smooth face hammer $25. I have a couple of the old wide softside/hardtop Milwaukee rollerbags $50 HD clearance. So large rollerbag for powertools with soft cases inside rollerbag for most individual powertools. The other large roller bag is for roofs - sawsquatch, rafter/carpenter square, etc. I use a combination of 5 gal buckets for shims, handsaws, prybars, short levels, socket sets, screwdrivers. Well, many 5gal buckets for demo, interior trim, doorknobs, drywall, etc.

Packout actually has been working good for me. I haven't had any problems with my wheels yet but I'll let you know. I'm a Mobile Diesel Diagnostic Tech/ Full Time Transit Tech and I use it to carry all my Diag Equipment. Plus I did a custom job with a packout case to hold my Picoscope in it. I'll do a video and share it with everyone.

Hey Vince, I'm a Steamfitter and a Plumber. I know exactly what you are talking about when it comes to the Packout moving tools in and out of the worksite. I ended up putting my 80% Tools (which means the tools I use 80% of the time given any task) and ended up keeping some of the tools (the 20% big gun kinda tools) in the truck to reduce the weight of what I was carrying. For example I put my Fuel Hackzall in the Packout, leave the Fuel Sawzall in the truck. The price on these systems are wildly different based on retailers. In Canada we had a really amazing promotion with the bottom box, the Impact, Hammer Drill, and Sawzall w/ Batteries and a Charger with another Promo Battery for an amazing price point. I told two of my colleagues they wouldn't get any better deal to enter in the system. One of them purchased it, the other regretted not doing so. Keep up the content brother, it's always nice seeing a contractors opinion be clean, and clear.

The Milwaukee packout boxes are pretty well made, I picked up a parts organizer box and found that it was just too big. In dimensions it's much larger than my dewalt boxes but offers the same amount of storage inside maybe the slightest bit more. Packout box didn't fix on my shelf in utility van so I'm sticking with the dewalt boxes

I used the 11 bin organizer to keep all my electric meters (megohmeter, clamp meters, manometers, temp clamp probes, k type thermocouples, infrared, etc.) Organized. Just removed all the bins except one to hold all my thermocouples.

As a locksmith, safe and vault technicians and automotive locksmith it allows me a work tailored approach. Love the packout. I agree with you assessment though. But for my scope of work it's perfect. Left is safes center is installs and hardware and right is key cutting from standard to sidemill automotive programming. Grab and go.

thankyou.. all in all at the end of the day when the jobs done.. my cordless or things that don't get thrown into a pile (wrenches, sockets, extensions) get put away neatly.. when the job comes up, until its finished depending on job.. my tools and their associated accessories go into seperate cheap nylon bags with hard rubber pads that has been lasting and working for years.

The whole beginning of your rant, about having to load/unload/bring into job/load/reload.........is pointless. You still have to do that with your Husky bag. I use the Packout, and yes it's not perfect, and I can't even begin to describe what would be perfect. But, it is the best solution for MY needs. I've been looking for an alternative solution to carrying my tools with me (I'm a mobile technician and audio installer) the packout system looked like a good system to invest into, but at $300 for some plastic 🤔🤔 there's gotta be a better, more convenient system somewhere ???? Or maybe I'll just do what I planned on for the past few years and just build something? My tools are heavy, my back, hips and knees aren't in love with excessive weight, so constantly removing boxes to get into the bottom section is a 100% no go for me. You're doing a great job and yes I know this is an old video but I'm here watching now as I've recently discovered the channel. You've helped me quite a bit and I appreciate what you do.

Yes! I have told everyone that asked about my packout system. I wouldn't buy it again, and frankly I won't. I love it, but at full price it isn't paying me back. 179.00 I am happy. Granted I modified mine to fit my needs as a tradesman, and that's the other thing I tell people. This is not a ready to go system for YOU. It can and should be modified. Look at what others have done with it. That bottom box is a cavity with wheels. It can and should be utilized better to fit You're needs.

I have the pack out and rolling bag. Both are great the packout stays on the truck. The extendable handle on my rolling bag is having a issue with sometimes getting locked up and not extending fully now. I like the pack out for keeping water off power tools the rolling bag is water resistant but not the best for keeping tools dry would like to see this improved upon

Got the Packout on the $199 deal Home Depot has. Don’t go in and out of my bins a lot since this system went to organize at home and my work already provides bins for the power tools. Waited till I saw the price drop and my wife said “you need to organize”. Only negative is after getting mine I noticed a wheel wobble. All 32 at the store had the same wheel wobble on the right side. No good Milwaukee.

I hear what you're saying and you are right for your situation. But for me, I thoroughly love the Packout. And I am not a soft-side bag guy either. I use the small top box of my Packout for my handtools. I built a tool pallet system in the box. It works for me. Each to his own.

As an owner of the Milwaukee Packout, if you're looking at buying one I can 100% recommend it. Well worth the money. Buy it. As for the tote bags, buy ToughBuilt bags and working belts. You can't go wrong.

I got rid of my pack out boxes and bought the rigid boxes after the wheel broke on mine too. I REALLY like the clips on the sides of the rigid boxes. You don't have to try n hold the box while you awkwardly slide it while not sliding the entire setup. Everyone should try the rigid boxes I'm very happy with em. I still have em filled with miluakee goodies

I think most people are bringing everything in, and unstacking all the boxes. Then when the day is over stacking them to load back up. I personally am a die hard fan of Milwaukee tools. Use them over 40hrs a wk. They get wet, dropped, subjected to 100 plus degrees in my service van, and below zero temps. Only thing I've ever noticed is in super cold temps you can tell a slight difference in response when you first pull the trigger on my impact. No reduction in torque, speed etc. Just that one moment until the tool slightly warns up it has a slightly different response. Most people wouldn't even notice, although since I use it hrs upon hrs a week, I do.

I put the 10 inch tote inside my bottom box with all my hand tools inside it. Next to it is room for my tool belt , knee pads safety glasses etc. It essentially becomes a hard organised and storage with my everyday stuff in it. Maybe wastes some space but means i'm not lugging anything i don't need and i have wheels to get in and out. I'm usually no more than 2 days on one site so it works for me. Just an idea

Elias.H Charchar An 81/2” Sheppard caster (Solid rubber , greaseable hub) . 8 or 81/2” is max ! you need to fashion a bearing surface for the wheel , Milwaukee’s axel is only 3/8”, I used aquapex scrap , and a few stainless steel washers ( you don’t want rust dribbles on someones floor ! YMMV!

I do HVAC/R work so it works great for me to keep all my tools organized and off the floor of my truck. My main service bag is a CLC backpack so my everyday tools sit in that. Stuff in the packout dont get used all the time.

Looks cool and yes it’s versatile. However as a Makita tool fan, I think there storage boxes get overlooked a lot especially since HD doesn’t stock them. The boxes interlock to each other. They are easy to handle. I’m a business owner with a truck so getting boxes in and out are a concern. Packout just doesn’t make sense for what I need day to day. The cool thing about Makita boxes is they are interchangeable with Bosch and Festool. One company makes all of the boxes for all three brands. If you want to purchase the festool vac then the Makita boxes will snap right on top of it.

The makita boxes are not made by tanos but under license. The mafel, hitachi etc are just that bit nicer to use as the clips are better than the makita ones. I’m changing my makita ones as they break for hitachi ones as they are considerably cheaper and are better to use. All that said the tanos system is great in that it’s all modular sizes but it lacks a few things for the price point they are all ABS plastic so brittle especially in the cold. They are too small for a lot of bigger power tools, they are bloody expensive for what they are. They do make racking out a van very easy though. Tanos is owned by festool

Adam Lynch Ahhhh you must be from another country which is very cool. Mafell and Hitachi boxes aren’t popular here in the USA. Mafell are incredible tools there’s no denying that. Festool is popular and very pricy. There sustainer boxes are great. Bosch boxes are hard to find. I’ve actually never seen the Hiatachi boxes. Never had an issue with my Makita boxes but I’m always in the market for new solutions. I’m OCD when it comes to my tools and keeping everything the same. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who can relate. Tanos from what I can see, have a box line that isn’t tool manufacture labeled. I’ll check out some pricing with those. Sean Kadar I’ve got a couple of Tanos own brand totes they were cheaper than the makita totes but still expensive. Yes I’m in uk. Festool own Tanos which is why they get the best of the innovation like the systainers with draws in etc. Panasonic have a t-loc type that are half the price of the festool ones here

I love my Packout stuff but idk if I would have the Packout if I didn't have a cargo trailer or a van with a ramp lol. I love their durability, waterproofing, and ability to lock them up and keep them exposed and safe in a truck bed.... But I bought the Packout before I had a cargo trailer. Now I don't really need that security, and waterproofing... I don't even need as much durability because I'm careful with my stuff.... Now I'm actually considering going with the Festool systainers that have drawers. And ya... I hate having to open the bottom containers for my caulking gun, circ saw, planer, etc lol. It sucks.

I like the fact that the Packout keeps my cordless tools protected from moisture going from truck to job in the rain or snow... Tried the first cart 15 years ago, from ZAG...( Stanley ) IT was a good proof of concept, but was poorly built. Handles would pull clear out, and box was too small. But it had utility for a while. Later would throw a milk crate like thing on top of a separate rolling platform..... it was a few minutes in and out at each jobsite to stow everything. Power tools on top in a milk crate. Things could slide away, even with a bungee cord... when I had steps or a steep sidewalk. This past December, I got a Packout with 3 components. Almsot perfect.... it will slide right up the backside of my Sprinter vans bumper onto the bed without taking it apart first, or lifting of the whole thing. The wheels and handle are strong, much better than previous rolling carts I looked at. The downside is playing TETRIS in my van. I took out the MIDDLE box from mine, and put one of the CRATES on top. That gives me an optimal layout. A removable DRAWER system would make a good end of year release for 2021. Or perhaps a VAN UPFIT system for carts to lock onto van floor and wall. The Apex is to be everything to everyone... Packout is damn close. The moment they went on sale for 199.99, that became the perceived value. You can always lower a price, but just can not raise it, without dropping off a lot of sales.The a-la-carete ( pun ) pricing on Packout is still a bit stiff..... about 20% higher than what I value it at. But I did replace a few eggcrate type boxes with the Packout ones, despite their being a little pricey. The product is exceptionally well made. The homeowner definitely does not need one. So it does not need to compete with toolbags or other tool organization. It is for jobsite-shop-van TRANSFER.

I do HVAC/R service work. Bought the rolling box with m18 fuel impact, m18 fuel hammer drill, m18 fuel hacksaw, m18 fuel grinder, 2 5mah batteries and duel voltage charger for $375. Bought the small and medium tool boxes separately for $55 and $60 respectively, got 2 egg crates for $20 each and a full size 11 bin organizer for $21.xx. I think I got everything for a fair price but am def sore about not being able to access the rolling box without removing the other shit from on top of it. Works well so far and keeps alllll my stuff highly organized. Would not buy any Milwaukee stuff at full retail because I believe all their stuff is priced properly at the sale prices, no higher. The packout works great for me at the price I got it because it sits in the truck, it organizes my tools and keeps bags off the floor of my van. I keep all my EDC tools in my CLC service backpack. The tools in the packout dont get used everyday.
