The FA have absolutely NO questions to answer. They ultimately picked the best candidate they had to choose from. Their job is to appoint a manager to get England a major tournament win, nothing more and nothing less. It doesn't seem to have bothered anybody that a 'foreigner' got the women's team a tournament win did it? If there were any top quality English managers who wanted the job, then by all means be critical of the FA. But there were not.

Scottish guy here, with no skin in the game regarding who England get as a manager. Your Lionesses won a Euros with a Dutch manager. No one batted an eye, and why would they... Tuchel is one of, if not basically THE best manager available right now. It's a huge appointment, and a massive upgrade in terms of experience and success from what's come before. Anyone complaining about his nationality should be considered a giant red flag.

Yet also said it's not right because it won't fit St Georges Park and the mantra of english coaches. Do you not think the issue here is that the english coaches have not gone and proven themselves to deserve the job? What english coach has a better record than Tuchel? Gary completely glosses over the fact that the reason why we dont have an identity and a style as a nation, is because we have a Premier League dominated by foreign owners, foreign managers and foreign players who bring their own style. English players might grow up with a style, but that style will be pretty quickly changed or beaten out of them by their foreign dominated clubs. Tuchel move is reflection of England's failings in coaching. Very few top-tier nations recruit from abroad or need to. England do have top class coaches abroad. Englishmen Steve McClaren, Darren Bazeley and Charlie Trout coach Jamaica, New Zealand and Puerto Rico respectively. Those countries are ranked by Fifa as 61st, 95th and 154th. Plus England have fine young coaches coming up like Gary Neville, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney. Not bad, eh ?

I think our talented group of football players shouldn't be hindered by the lack English managerial talent. We've managed to get a great coach who has actually won things. The outstanding candidates Gary mentioned have barely competed at the highest level, whereas the players in the squad have now won all trophies across Europe. I just don't see the rationale tbh, happy with the appointment of Thomas Tuchel and I hope to see him unlock the system we've been crying out for 🙌

As an English person of course it’s disappointing there is a lack of quality English managers & of course a little part of me thinks it’s wrong to have a German manager. HOWEVER… His first announcement (on the England instagram page) was very good very humble and ambitious, he’s a proven winner, experienced manager with experience managing big players. Last English manager to win a major trophy was Harry Redknapp...FA cup 2008.....No English manager has ever won the PL...the last English manager to be respected at world level was prob Bobby Robson. English managers in general have little credential, backed up by the fact there is no English managers appointed by champions league quality teams both at home and abroad...its been little over a decade since SGP was opened and we are certainly seeing improved technical abilities of young players coming through....will we start seeing the same results with new coaches and managers coming through the SGP system ?....only time will tell.

The difference between the other big footballing nations and England, is they dont have their top leagues dominated by foreign players and foreign managers. Premier League 68% non English players, 85% non English managers. In many ways you reap what you sow for the national team because the talent pool for the national side is the same talent pool as the Premier League. If you want an English manager who is top class then you need to restrict the number of foreign managers in the league like you do with players, St Georges Park isnt going to fix that.

It's all an issue of the will to regulate & change things - Germany & Spain both favor their clubs to be membership controlled / owned which brings its own set of issues - before the *Bosman ruling* in the mid Nineties , there were strict rules in Europe regarding the number of foreigners ( 3 to 4 max ? ) in starting line ups - you can thank the Belgian (?) judges for that one.... - both the ownership issues can be sorted out , as we saw with Abramovich and Chelsea - in Germany a decade (?) ago they implemented a rule in the Basketball Bundesliga : every team would be forced to include 50% of the roster / squad slots - to German youth players > in 2023 - seemingly 😉 - out of nowhere - Germany won the FIBA Basketball World Cup - things can be improved , changed and regulated , they are not set in stone for eternity - however i acknowledge this will take huge efforts in terms of advocating & political lobbying.....

The women's team , the only senior team which actually did win trophy has a foreign coach. So, stop this narrative on how English coaches build a necessary atmosphere for success. Eddie Howe took Bournemouth from the bottom of league 2 with NO MONEY to the premier league and kept them there for 5 years, they were that skint he had to pay for training equipment out of his own wages. Eddie Howe took Newcastle from 19th to CL In 1 season, finished with the best defence in the league, one of the highest scorers 2 years in a row and also a cup final. People speak about Emery but Howe finished with more points, more goals and a better defence when he got Newcastle to CL. Howe also finished one of the highest scorers last season, finished higher scorers than Villa who finished 4th and will finish higher scorers again this season. If it wasn’t for Man Utd winning the fa cup then Newcastle would still be in Europe

Well, my feelings towards Thomas Tuchel it’s slightly biased being a Chelsea supporter but then also as an English man I personally believe he will do very well in this position as England manager Thomas Tuchel classes the United Kingdom as ahis second home and is very passionate. As a neutral the ONLY two negatives I can see for this appointment are: 1) No "foreign" manager has ever won a World Cup managing a national side - might just be a "stat" that doesn't mean anything, but usually when something lasts as long as that it's for a reason. 2) As someone that doesn't follow the England national team I thought the idea since Southgate was going to be to promote from within so that the coach of the U21 knows they have a clear route to progress to the national team manager. Both of those negatives though are completely countered with the same point: they appointed a better, more qualified manager than what would've been available otherwise. I think he could do well there, though it seems like anything short of winning the Euros/World Cup is considered a failure by England fans, despite the team never really being as good as they seem to think it is. On what Neville said about English coaches finding it "hard to get the top jobs" in European football, has he considered that maybe the English coaches that he wants to get these roles aren't quite good enough? Potter got the Chelsea job and flamed out, Howe has the Newcastle job (and is doing ok), but what other "top" English manager are there that would warrant being at a top English, or European club? I did my coaching badges outside of the UK and for the price I paid to get a UEFA B license you would've only been able to get a Level 1 certificate in England. That's farcical. If you want better coaches, maybe start by making it accessible at grass roots level.

St George's Park is helping produce better coaches = Better coaches provide better coaching for players = players get better. The coaching is done at club level, but club coaches are upskilled through St George's Park.
