The reason a lot of enemies in the game feel like DOOM enemies is because they are just that. Croteam was one of the developers taking a shot at the new DOOM 4 and they were turned down mostly for communication distances. They reused a lot of this content for Serious Sam 3 which is why the Scrapjack is basically a Mancubus and the Khnum is basically a Hell Knight.

The first Doom took your weapons away after each episode, and both Doom and Doom II took them away if you died and restarted the map. TSE took your weapons away every time you entered a new era. Not to mention, BFE gives you your weapons back rather quickly after you first lose them. This whole review feels off to me. Some points are valid, some are too harsh, some I feel are a personal issue, and then there are flaws with the game that aren't even mentioned, plus improvements to the series that don't get a mention, either. Technopolyps were the second worst enemy added to the game, yet it's the relatively easy to deal with grunts that get all the ire. The energy lasso is one of the coolest weapons in the series, but there's no mention of it. There's no mention of the melee finisher mechanic or the addition of sprinting, good or bad, either. Let's not forget the numerous dark areas the game likes to put you through. I'm not sure how the iron sights being mostly ineffective is a detriment, considering they're entirely optional, and the game never gives you reason to use them. Overall, I'd say the review is a mess. It feels like something about the game in its entirety rubbed you the wrong way, tilting the review into focusing on the things that happened to annoy you, instead of looking at both the good and the bad.

I have to agree with you. I do not understand this review at all. I liked all the new guns. I played SS3 eight times, over about 220 hours. Considering I paid £7 for it, that is astonishing value for money. ....Neither do I feel it starts too slow. All Sam games start at a slower pace because they train you how to deal with each enemy. However I don't mind admitting I did get a bit bored of the city areas first time I played. It soon moved on though by the time I was wondering how long it was going to remain grey city.....Performance was fine. Though I do notice they put some heavy AA on as default, so check that out in the settings.

Tripod Ranger Indeed. Ggg really didn't give BFE enough credit where it mattered and failed to mention flaws (dark underground sections, lack of humor early on) very much worthy of note. A few valid points were said, like the slow trot the game takes before taking off from the bland "modern warzone" setting and bits of pacing after that, but the rest just strikes me as some weird piss on his cereal. Hell, he hardly acknowledges _anything_ done right, like swapping that dumpster fire of a knife for the amazing sledgehammer, giving the handgun a bigger-than-niche use, sprinting to get at least some control of horde attacks! For sure one of his weakest reviews to date.

None of the games in Serious Sam franchise were ever perfect. But weirdly that is one of the reasons I love these games so much. But I do have to say, that some of your points are just a complete bullshit.Taking weapons away is suddenly a bad thing? Then could you name ANY game in SS franchise, that didn't use that feature? In TSE you have to start from scratch three times. In SS2 it's ridiculous. I think about 7 times. Even in the TFE, after beating Metropolis you lose all ammo except shotgun shells, and need to slowly reacquire them, which is pretty much the same as taking your weapons away. And in SS3 it was done in a very good way with that awesome level that starts in the dune storm. It's obviously a common feature in this franchise, that forces you to re-invent your combat strategy. And it would have been much more boring without it. Also I really like the plot in this game. The beginning is kinda boring, I agree, but it becomes really epic near the end. In the end Sam is literally the LAST human on Earth. In SS1 they say that he was chosen to go, but here we can see, that he wasn't. He simply had no other choice. There was literally nobody else to send. And the ending is more than epic. It's SERIOUS. They've obviously added some new mechanics like sprinting, aiming and reloading. For me reloading also was annoying at first, but then I've just learned to switch to something else, if I was about to be cornered. Finding right time to reload is actually a cool addition to already "smart" combat formula that TFE and TSE had established. Aiming down sights is not annoying at all. I mean come on, really? Isn't it a lil' bit cooler to shoot while aiming down sights? I personally think it is. And sprinting was obviously added mostly to make traversing large maps much faster. Something that old SS games REALLY could use. The pacing is all over the place, I agree, but still there are plenty of well-designed fights to enjoy and overcome. Especially on Serious difficulty (Seriously though, is there anybody who plays Serious Sam games NOT on Serious difficulty? That's where it is best at!)
@BrickManLive7 жыл бұрын
And people can complain about the last stage (The Guardian of Time) being boring as much as they want. For me it is standing right next to The Grand Cathedral in terms of epicness. But in terms of actual challenge I think it even surpasses that. The last stage of SS3 is one of the most challenging and brutal (but encouraging at the same time) levels I've ever seen in any FPS. It puts all your FPS skill to their absolute limit. Reaction, strategy, quick thinking, ammo management, improvisation, and last, but probably the most important - skill of maintaining prolonged concentration. You have to stay sharp from the beginning to the very end. Otherwise your arse is going to be kicked really hard. Beating it on Serious difficulty without any saves in one clear shot was insanely tough but extremely satisfying experience, the likes of which only a true Serious Sam game can offer.

@darktitan30257 жыл бұрын
In The First Encounter the justification was that Sam had to walk a great distance and the weapons would slow him down. It's a pretty shitty explanation all things considered. Also it's different parts of the world, not 3 different worlds. But still, he uses the teleport, so it makes more sense, even though I still don't like it as a mechanic. In Serious Sam 2 I don't remember what the reason was, I think Sam was teleported around by the Syrians or something
@GepardenK7 жыл бұрын
I love that they do this, just like doom and quake. The reality is that gameplay becomes fundamentally different when you have access to stuff like canon and minigun, it's great to mix it up somewhat by going back to shotguns once in a while for some more intimate encounters against fewer enemies. Plus, I love looking for weapons and that is only a thing as long as you don't already have them all. Note: They didn't take away your weapons in TFE, just all ammo except for shotgun ammo (as you said Sam had to drop it when walking over the desert)

Have to disagree wholeheartedly as its tied with TFE for my favorite Sam, and those two are two of my all time favorite games. The ammo starvation isn't so much of an issue provided you're exploring at least a little, and I personally enjoy the conservation aspect, it forces to prioritize certain weapons/ammo for certain enemies.

This is quite uncanny, specifically for me, you are saying the exact same thing as I; I may prefer TFE as a whole, since it just flows much better in my opinion, and it feels more "video gamey" than BFE that tries to keep realistic architectures, plus it has better atmospheres than BFE. But, on the other hand, BFE is my favorite, gameplay-wise, because it has an insane amount of tech that rewards recklessness. I'm actually doing a Infinite Weapons Only Challenge, which means using only the first 3 weapons on the weapons list, and geez, I'm at Level 9 and I only really got stuck 4 times, and that's because I don't just want to use the Pistol to slowly kill the bigger baddies (not that I would've had the time); the Mutilator is very fun to use and it requires very good movement to not get blown by a Mech, and it was fun clobbering the Red Arachnoids with the Hammer. A shame I don't use the C4s for that, since I LOVE I have to get dangerously close to instantly, one-shot the aforementioned enemies. It's freaking great, and while I may not like the levels themselves, I often go back to SS3 still, maybe due to its Mods that may exploit these mechanics.

Haters gonna hate, but I think BFE is one of the best, if not THE best SS game so far. And I've been a more or less fan of the series since the original rolled out and was considered just a great looking Doom clone, well past the era when said term was still fashionable. The game performs very well on my 6yo i5 2500 + GTX 560ti combo at 1080p, with roughly High settings - each category hand-tweaked for best performance & visual balance. I've not been as entertained from the get go with a game for ages; no idea how anyone would find THIS game "boring", all while praising something actually sloggish like D44M. I also quite disagree about people criticizing the reload system of the lower-tier weapons. That and the implemented sprinting do end up adding quite a bit of depth to the combat IMO, as it requires you to master how each gun works and plan your movements a bit more thoroughly than in TFE/TSE, where the legendary S+M1 was a valid tactic most of the time. Not to mention the AR would borderline dominate over the minigun and many other weapons without limited mag size, that accurate and surprisingly powerful it is. Biomechanoid rockets do not home. And you can easily shoot'em down. If you run out of ammo, you're not exploring the maps enough. tl;dr: Casual era seems to have Seriously downgraded people. Quite disappointed in Gggmanlives.

+Sqaaman's Hand It's kind of the opposite. On a surface level Serious Sam is just an okay shooter (it doesn't have those epic singleplayer campaigns ala Halo or Half-Life). But then when you look deeper into it it's an extremely complex shooter with a lot of nuance and flow that is very satisfying to play as you try to master it. You can play it over and over again and always find new depth while Halo etc becomes rather bland in singleplayer once the story and set-pieces can't impress you anymore.

Now, i have to disagree with you. Sure, this is my opinion on your review, so don't get mad because of it. 1. This game is not unfair. I beat it like 5 times on Serious difficulty and i never died except on final boss one time. Maybe this game was unbalanced on the start, but i played latest Gold version, which has all DLC's and all that stuff and i didn't found any problems with difficulty. 2. The reloading is not a problem if you know how to use it. Cause, if you didn't know, you can cancel the reload animation with Sprint or by switching to another weapon. Just wait until Sam puts in new mag and then hit Sprint or switch to another weapon, and you don't have to wait for the rest of the animation been played. Just so you know. Also, the comparison with Super Mario and stamina bar is stupid. Cause it's two different games, thus you can't compare them. 3. Slow start in Serious Sam 3 can be explained. I mean, it starts before the first encounter, right? So yeah, it shows you with what Sam has to deal with before he teleported back in time. That is why there is not that much amount of enemies in the begining of the game. But again, i didn't find that to be a problem, when gameplay wise, this game is fun AF. Also, after those two first encounters, developers wanted to give player something different, just so player can slowly get in to the gameplay of SS3. Because, in first two encounters there was too much enemies from the begining, so there should be a slow start in third game, just so the game looks and feels different and gives player something new. 4. About enemies been ripoff. Isn't that what parody is? I mean, Serious Sam was inspired by Doom, Duke Nukem, Blood, Shadow Warrior etc, thus the enemies is a parody to those that is in those games. Gnaar is basically a Pinky from Doom for example. So yeah, because of that you shouldn't been taking this too serious, because it is a parody of those games. 5. YES, engine of this game is well optimized, i can confirm that. Because, i'm playing it on my old PC where i have 2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 video card with 256 MB memory and it runs perfectly on custom settings. It gives me from 50 to 60 FPS stable and i have no problems playing it at all, also having good visuals. So yeah, i don't get it, where did you got those problems with it's optimization. 6. Heatscaning enemies were in previous games about Serious Sam. In fact, they were in every single FPS game, so i don't understand your complain about them, cause, like with everything else, i didn't found them to be a problem. And YES, there is a lots of cover in SS3BFE, which proves that you are wrong. By the way, didn't you even know that Serious Sam 3 is all about: No Cover, All man? At least that is what developers said in one of their interviews. And they prove to be right, because SS3 well balanced and i like it. And, Biomechanoids DIDN"T HAVE HOMING ROCKETS! The only homing projectiles in the whole game is from reptiloids, which you can find only in DLC Jewel of the Nile, and not in the main game. But even then, you can shoot down their projectiles. So again, false complain. 7. About weapons: Few of them are secret weapons, which means that you need to find them. Laser gun can be found in the museum, after you locate that dead professor. It's in one of the secret rooms. And sniper rifle can be found on one of the levels at small building at one of the rooftops. Also you can find other weapons that are not a secret in secret places. That is why the locations in Serious Sam 3 is so big. You just need to explore them to find more stuff, instead of runing around and complaining that you don't have ammo or weapons. 8. 7:04 - the same as Doom, Duke Nukem and every other FPS game. But yet, you didn't complained about it in reviews of those games. Thus, in my opinion, you just complaining about stuff that you found in SS3, just because this game is not for you. And not because it is really bad. Sure, all that you said in your review is your opinion, but i can have my opinion about your review, can i? I think i can, like everyone else. And so here you have it.

Great reviews you have here, i personally really liked Serious Sam 3 . after i got into the idea what Croteam wanted to do with the whole Weapon feel and use right weapon for right enemy, i started getting into a rhythm. and i always like in games when later they for a little while strip you off your powers.. its beginning to be cliche.. but it makes a backflip on your brain when it happens. i dont find that tidious i find it a good plot to introduce some more challenging levels for what was essentially spent in the Warzoned City now to happening in the desert. However it was mostly the weapon feel that got me through this game. I never beat it but i got pretty far. Those Fucking bitches that took hold of you can die though. they were really annoying.

It starts weird and slow and with some bad corridors, but then its near purfect, the ending is also so fucking amazingly challenging and breathless. If I recall correctly, Serious Sam BFE was originally going to be a modern military type game, hence the iron sights, sprinting, and the first few levels that look like Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer maps. There was a bit of outcry over Croteam making that game over another Sam, so they hastily scrambled together SS3 while reusing a lot of the military game's assets. So you're technically right about this game feeling rushed and hastily thrown together. Good review as usual though GGG! Still waiting patiently for that EYE: Divine Cybermancy review!

07:13 this was just a common thing in Serious Sam games, almost every game in the series did that. Didn't find it too tiring in the older games as it was like "hey, use these weaker weapons a bit more since you have been hogging the big guns too much" and it does make sense.. forced variety I guess.

Maybe I've gotta replay this again, but this was actually my favorite of the series when I played it. I agree and understand a good number of your complaints, but I never had such a substantial problem with the pacing. It does start off slow and take a bit too long to give you all your weapons, but I didn't find so terrible and certainly not for as much of the game. I also think you missed out not mentioning the Mutilator which can be pretty fun to use, or the jetpack near the end. Level design, for my taste, was pretty good too, and had plenty of secrets to search for which is always fun. The hitscan enemies were annoying as hell though, and I agree they didn't have a place in a series that was so focused on projectile avoidance and circle strafing. One of my biggest disappointments was just that it ended when it did. The last few levels are a blast, especially after you get the jetpack, which was the most fun part of the game for me. I wish it was around for more than a level or two, or that they had continued to ramp things up to even more insane enemy counts. I hope they do make a Serious Sam 4 though, would love to see them apply what they learned from this and make something really amazing!

This is my favorite Serious Sam. Sprinting, sprinting and the hammer. I agree that it started off slow, but I never really stopped enjoying it after the second level (I absolutely loathed the second) and then brief underground areas which were bad for the same reasons. Other than that I had a blast.
@tudythegangster6 жыл бұрын
There's nothing more annoying than people complaining about iron sights. Reality check: they're guns, you aim through the sights and then you fire, that's how they're supposed to work. Actually now that I think about it, there is something more annoying than that: people acting like iron sight aiming is a bad thing just because Call of Duty has it.

I know this isn't technically part of the game, but the Steam Workshop makes this game SO much better. There are mods that fix some of the faults in the gameplay, (the "no reload" mods comes to mind) New campaigns, new weapons, and new enemies. There's even a mod that's based off of Shadow Warrior (wink, wink) Before you stop playing this game, I urge you to give the Workshop a try.
@Neon_Henchman6 жыл бұрын
I'd say that manually reloading the guns adds a bit of tension to the experience; being surrounded by the weaker enemies without any bullets in the assault rifle, or having multiple strong enemies but you can't afford reloading the Devastator, while it wasn't like this in the other games, I think it forces you to look at your weapons in a different way, you have yo be more conscious to it, it adds something that the other games didn't. But still, I totally agree that the pacing is annoyingly slow, me too when I played it the first time, it left me in a very sour mood. Having to find these keys was pretty redundant, the first few games did had puzzles, but they were always straightforward and Netrisca gave you clues. These I agree were a downgrade. I still gave the game a.second chance, on Serious Difficulty, and my opinion improved. Again, I looked at my inventory in a different way, and I kept getting better. Part of the appeal of the series for me is that they are games to master, twisting the neck of an Arachnoid to then throw a C4 to a group of Kleer is very satisfying. That still didn't redeemed the final level which is still a huge chore, but I was glad to have given SS3 a third and fourth playthrough. There are other mechanics like again the C4 and the melee executions that I do wish are going to be ported to SS4, as they added gameplay elements while keeping the controls simple enough. There are defenitely a bunch of things to learn from this game.

The weird thing to me is that Serious Sam 3 is the only one in the series that has kept me playing through the whole game several times. There's nothing wrong with your criticisms, Gggmanlives, but for almost all of them I could think to myself "that doesn't even bother me enough to be an issue" On the other hand, I've played through 2/3rds of First Encounter before getting both both bored and unable to cope with the difficulty increase, I stop playing and then do it all over again several months later. Same thing with Second Encounter, but in that game I only do the first 1/3rd of it. Still for co-operative I've done every level at least once. Serious Sam 2 is worst as I can't get through it alone and my co-operative companions give up before I do. SS3 managed to keep me in the game. There is something the gameplay that makes it feel extremely satisfying to keep playing

7:12 Did you forget that in Doom, Blood and every fps that used the episode system did the same. Starting again from square one, yes, every E?M1 level of those games were designed with that in mind , but it didn't make sense to lose the weapons at the end of one episode (from a story perspective), to start again with your weak pistol (or pitchfork like monolith's game) in the next one. That gave the level tons of variety and a really rewarding sense of progression. I wish you would have elaborated some more on why you hate this level so much.

I recently got in the mood to play some Serious Sam recently, and started playing through. None of what Gman criticizes REALLY bothers me too much EXCEPT the low ammo thing. Serious Sam is not a Resident Evil game, you SHOULD NEVER have to conserve ammo. I just recently finished the part where you come out of the pyramid and get on the helicopter with that chick. I stopped playing, because after that they throw you immediately into another arena without letting you replenish your ammo. The older SS games would ALWAYS replenish your ammo after or before a big fight, now i'm in the 3rd big battle without any ammo replenishment and it is complete BULLSHIT.

Admittedly, it's kind of refreshing to listen to someone rip and tear this game apart for the flaws which it does indeed possess, so I'm not going to use this comment to bring up any defenses for it. Things like the pacing of Sam 3 is very slow, design choices for enemies like the Witch-Brides, Technopolyps, Cave Demons, and the Khnums are rather unfit for Sam's usual style of gameplay, and the ammunition for the larger guns is certainly in too short a supply. Overall, I can certainly say that you're not wrong in assessing the flaws in this game, so hopefully, Croteam will take some of these points into account for their next game! Interesting little bit of trivia: Croteam was actually considered to design a new DOOM title many years ago, having gotten a chance to meet with ID Software and show off the capabilities of their new engine. The Khnum was one of the earliest assets created, which actually had a lightwave model named "BaronofHell.iwo" in the game's files (I would link my source of info here, but I'm not sure if you've blocked links in the comments section). Whether or not the enemies like the Scrapjack or the Cloned Soldiers are paid homages or blatant ripoffs of the Mancubus and the Zombiemen respectively, I'll leave that up to you!

The only Technopolip I had problem with was the first one, which forces you to take cover several times throughout the rest of the level, at least the latter ones, where you have the rocket launcher, were more dynamic, but sure having to wait is not difficult, although it's a kind of enemy I would've wanted to see more of, especislly if you happen to have the Devestator. Cave demons I wouldn't mind so much if they didn't spammed them in 6 locations throughout 2 levels and are grating to kill if you go for the highest score like I do. Witch-Brides are kind of annoying, again I wouldn't mind so much if you could hit them with more than one rocket at a time, at least when you get the cannon you can one-shot them, although for most of them you don't have that luxury. There are stuff I agree with this review, but I think he also misses the beauty of it; it's the kind of game that you enjoy more the more you master it. I admit, my first and second playthroughs left me in a sour mood, but latter playthroughs proved to be more fun. I kind of agree with Milansta, this review wasn't doing the game justice, he didn't mentioned how the game rewards your recklessness by one-shoting most enemies with melees and C4, and reloading makes you become more conscious of your inventory I think, it adds battle adrenaline.

This review places some things in perspective. As someone who played SS3 BFE first within the series, I didn't get it. I love big dumb visceral shooters, and this is one of the biguns, but I was so incredibly underwhelmed and bored by the first several levels that I actually gave up shortly after the boss fight with the alien ship. Admittedly, by that point the game had started to get entertaining because Sam's arsenal was opening up, but I just couldn't be brought to care enough to finish. In other words, your points about pacing and a few of the other design choices seem pretty spot on to me. I may try to finish BFE someday or just pick up that HD remaster of the first one.

Yea, the contracted city levels were a pain, but the horror ones underground were even worse. You have to endure a fair bit to enjoy SS3, but I say its worth it. Its downright insane in the last level, so much so, I had to sprint through the home stretch, because I had zero ammo to wall weapons (its a nice story to tell, but on the other hand its not was supposed to happen in such a game xD). I liked very much that SS3 was also the funniest game in the series, they really stepped up in that department.

When that game got cancelled, Croteam slapped together the pieces and turned it into a Serious Sam game so that they could recoup their efforts on the failed project. Constantly forcing the player to backpedal because everything they do to kill enemies for some reason causes a huge cloud of sand dust to fill the air like a smoke grenade from CS. Like they wanted you to feel like you were part of this big epic fight be obscuring most of the combat area. Fill the combat zone with dust instead of with enemies to get the player to move around. Its was a just a weak solution.

That's a valid point.

Hey, Ggman, you never reviewed the most forgotten Serious Sam game on the GameCube, “Serious Sam: The Next Encounter”, along with the Game Boy Advance game, “Serious Sam Advance”. These games took place between TSE and SS2. The gameplay is similar to the other games and the toony art style came from this game before SS2, except that this game is more toony than it. I wanted to see what are your thoughts on these games.

That's weird. I run it at 4k all maxed out and never dip below 60fps and I'm sure my hardware is a lot older (video card) than Ggg. Seems like every few reviews, he has issues running games. Other than that, I also find it weird that he said this was tedious when it's no different than any other shooting game of that genre (like doom) that's basically the same thing over and over until you finish.

Was wondering when you were going to get to this one. What I found most interesting about the review though was you briefly talked about a Mario game. Have you ever considered doing some FPS reviews on the Wii? Cause there are some pretty good ones.

I'm so glad somebody finally said it. This is one of the best game reviews I have ever seen, absolutely nothing NOTHING was different from my thought process whilst playing the game. Love this channel.
