So the one thing most people don't get about Serious Sam is that it's meant to be like a FPS version of Robotron. Wading into a clusternugget of baddies and leading them in a dance and conga line is how you're supposed to do it. The devs even hint at it with the entries about the scorpion soldiers and biomechs, saying how they'll shoot through everything to get to you, even other baddies. That's why range is infinite, accuracy is laser-like, even the shotgun spread is essentially a rubber stamp (Seriously, go back and look at it, it's the same pattern every time, no randomisation). The excessive amount of particle effects in 3 is a good example of that, for the time those looked impressive and ran absolutely fantastic. @@Fourger14 I know, right? Strap on some BFG-9000, nukes and a Heavy's Sasha and add a whole living carpet of monsters to shoot at so you can have a true Serious Sam experience. As for the levels: BFE: Enhanced (you can try BFE: Premium too, but it is mostly an unbalanced clusterfuck) - classic SS3 campaign (JotN required) with additional enemies and 1.5-2 times more enemies overall, some map overhauls and a lot more spawn points for enemies. It gets blissfully kleertastic sometimes - just like in good old days of TFE. Best level to chill around, dreamily drifting in a pull of gnaar blood while kamikazes gently sing arias in your name. Bullets and Blood 2 - singular level of non-singular arenas filled with even more non-singular enemies that will take very much non-singular hour to beat. Enemies from TFE HD, TSE HD and SS2 mixed alltogether with some additional variants of them. ~9000 enemies (absolute record in SS, heck, probably in any shooter), several dozens arenas, dozen of boss-fights and some 4 hours of non-stop massacre. Intended to be played by a team of 5+ players with infinite respawns using default SS3 weapons (with its reload system) so generously scattered across the level, but we beat it with my friend using custom (and sometimes overpowered as Hell) weapons and some 200 lives. Most recommended, the Emperor of Levelkind itself. TFE and TSE Premium - more enemies, more interesting enemy variations (including unique bosses, like swiss knife mega-biomech with miniguns, lasers, rockets and a fucking cannon), a bit more guns and a lot more levels, which are mostly good - something quite rare in such campaigns. It may be not as epic as its counterparts up above, but it definitely stands tall amongst Serious Sam levels. Good and often charming campaign that will fill your heart with joy and occasional stray laser shot. And there are more, often smaller and more gimmicky, but nevertheless great levels. Try them, people, that's where you get true Serious Sam experience that even original games in their greatness could not reach. Praise be the Croteam. Praise be the Serious Sam Community.

My problem with SS2 has always been visual style above all else. It has its fair share of gameplay annoyances too, mind you, (the game is also WAY TOO FUCKING LONG) but they'd be a lot more tolerable if the game's visuals didn't look so ridiculously cartoonish. Even that is made worse by terrible character designs and abysmal animations in the cutscenes. I don't mind the comedy *too much*, I think some of it doesn't work (almost every instance of blatant fourth-wall breaking, especially), but I also think other aspects like Sam holding up the Gnaar to get past the gate are actually pretty amusing. None of it makes me laugh, but rarely do games manage to make me laugh intentionally anyway. I'm fine with just being amused. Weapon design is mostly okay, but I dunno what they hell they were thinking with the auto shotgun. It looks hideous. I'll give them credit for the design of the Kleer, which I think is a flat improvement over the original (and I think their appearance in BFE is even better, personally, making them the only enemy design that I think improves with each numbered title). It's a shame these designs are so odd. I've heard someone at Croteam mention that the art style was pushed on them by 2K, but I have to wonder about that considering just how immensely creative the designs of everything are. Nonetheless, I think it all distracts from the improved gameplay far, far, *far* too much, and the exaggeration in environmental design means that you can get tired of a certain area well before you're done with it. Unfortunately, the game also moves you onto more unlikable areas after enjoying a certain area (for instance, I like the industrial areas of Magnor before the game throws you onto colourful treetops and in meadows where the grass is taller than you are). It's like for every good thing the game does, it fucks something up, and that's a damn shame because in terms of pure gameplay, it could probably be considered the best in the series, certainly better than SS3 which I found to be boring (and even less funny).
@FrahdChikun5 жыл бұрын
@@innoclarke7435 keep in mind that SS2 came out in 2005, so cutscenes at the time were a bit low-resolution. Honestly you make some good points, but imo it's definitely the best in the series due to its variety and replayability. I don't mind the length since I have a lot of fun with it, I'd rather be in a bunch of different areas fighting a motley crew of over-the-top enemies than to just roam an empty desert fighting the same enemies over and over again. To hardcore fans, I understand why it's considered the worst in the series since it's so different from its previous titles, but it definitely brings a lot of good stuff to it.
@innoclarke74355 жыл бұрын
@@FrahdChikun Frahd Chikun The low-resolution I don't mind for precisely the reason you mentioned. But even when I first played it all those years ago as a child, I thought the cutscenes looked poorly done. And they do, because Croteam have never been great at animation, especially animating humanoids. If anything, SS2's animations for all the friendly creatures are the worst in the series for some peculiar reason. SS3 also shares this problem with terrible animations with humans. You'd think Croteam would find some way to improve this at some point, but alas.

Been looking back through takes like this on the Serious Sam series. Its infinitely entertaining to hear perspectives change around Serious Sam 2. I don't think I've ever seen a game where people can so easily name a list of the hard work, and laziness put into it, and both be so fitting and right. Meanwhile I think everyone has been able to agree Serious Sam 3 is some level of comparative mediocrity. Not bad... probably, but I haven't seen anyone as happy with it like the few that love SS2. Also just love the way this review was done. It feels somehow fitting that the series is such a crazy mess of different colliding titles, styles, and strange little shifts, while ultimately being different. Its always been roughly kind of its own bizarre thing, being old school where others aren't, but not exactly because never was a game like Doom, Duke, Quake, or others just all about that corridor-to-mass wave format. Throw in the score, floaty power ups, and strange transition to gritty war game tone, and it somehow feels like an amalgamation of what non-FPS fans think FPS games are supposed to be like. Its truly a weird series, and one I both love, but yet barely play at a decent rate or finish in actual practice. Once a year, I put in a few hours through some of it, and then it slips from memory for a bit, until the cycle calls on it again.

That enemy spawn sound... Stop abusing it. Every time I hear it, I sit up, tense up and get ready for action. Quite difficult to relax when that happens.

For real though, Serious Sam 2 looks and feels like a proto-Borderlands 2 in terms of just how big it is, how many enemies there are, and how comical it is.

The difference is, of course, that SS2 actually succeeds at being funny from time to time.

Fun fact: the classic versions of 1st and 2nd encounter, when played with ATi cards of the right vintage, support ATi TruForm, which is basically DX8 tesselation, a feature that wouldn't return until DX11 a decade later. Morrowind also supports it.
@Dr.MSC.W.Krueger11 ай бұрын
TruForm failed because it wasn't something that you got automatically; you had to redo all your assets as a 2nd version specifically with all the needed tessellation / smoothing tags. Naturally, almost no developer cared about it.

Like ... did he even try? I playing now the fusion version, but it looks sh1t compared to the original. However, if he played on normal, he would have hard dime in the original, as that had more enemies. Also, when he complains about the scorpion room. That is not how to clear that room... "Glory kill"? If you use it wisely, it saves you ammo. With the Sledgehammer, and the bracelet (how it is called? I never cared). About SS1: 5 Major Biomech in the first level? Don't even bother to shoot rockets. The pistols are enough, just keep them far away. The only thing I can agree is that in SS1 the enemy amount is insane.

you are using the Serious Sam 3 leash wrong, you only need to hold the mousebutton until the red part starts glowing, then you let go and kill the enemy way faster, it also has a weird buzzing sound to indicate it's ready

Fun video. A couple bits you missed were how the final boss in First Encounter was at the time far and away the hugest enemy boss ever seen in a FPS. Just an incredible spectacle for the final battle. Also hippie mode was lots of fun and showed they had some Serious Sam 2 instanity all the way back in the very first game.

There has never been a game that made me say "Oh, come the FUCK on." as much as the first serious sam games. You carefully clear out an area, such that when you advance you'll have a safe spot behind you so you can... nope, nevermind - 70 enemies just spawned behind you.
