"Fermi estimation" can also refer a general method of making estimates about things that are difficult to know exactly. For instance, Fermi himself was famous for asking his students questions like "how many piano tuners are there in Chicago?". This question isn't meant to be answered exactly, but is supposed to be an opportunity to generate a rough estimate of the correct answer. Fermi estimated around 150 tuners for this particular problem, reasoning that, Chicago's population of 3 million meant there were about 750,000 families total (assuming the average family has 4 members). If 1/5 of all families own a piano, that's 150,000 pianos in need of tuning. If the average piano tuner can service 1000 pianos a day, that results in about 150 piano tuners total. Fermi was know for having a particular knack for these types of estimations, often surprising students and colleagues alike with how close these rough guesses got to the correct answer. More practically, Fermi estimation can be a useful tool in quickly estimating the answer to a variety of problems, such as how many people would buy a product or how many lives a particular charity might be able to save.

Alpha Centauri is the nearest star system to our sun at 4.3 light-years away. That seems close, right? Well, it’s not. It would take 37,200 human years to travel just ONE light year on the fastest spaceship we have! 🚀 Maybe that’s why we haven’t seen aliens. Maybe we’re the most advanced life forms out there. Or we’re just too small and too far away for aliens to bother visiting. 🤷🏻‍♀️👽

I believe we are viewed as adorable creatures. Just as we see otters and chimps using tools as something cute. Sure it shows intelligence but we are not trying to teach otters how to program computer code, Or Chimps medical sciences; unless we ourselves are conducting an experiment. Plus I bet they see our constant infighting as a massive hinderance. Why give evidence of advanced technology if we still threaten our own safety with things we developed.
