FYI, you're safe returning the box to the post office. They only don't want you keeping it for non mail purposes. If you take it and return it they don't care. They only added the warnings because lots of businesses were hoarding them. But they're intended to be used by both the post office AND customers. But ONLY for mail purposes.

FYI if you were to get arrested for a post office related things in the US it would be by the postal inspectors (they are actually super cool!). The box’s get taken all the time, though. Just return it and they’ll be fine. Some of the workers actually use them to move personal items if they need to.
