The result of St. Anger is them coming together and resolving issues as they made the album. Implying St. Anger was atrocious, I whole-heartily disagree. St. Anger is their best album, and last best album in my opinion. Death Magnetic and Hardwired feel forced, hence this long wait between albums now. They have to get the vibe and see how they can make the kind of music fans want to hear. St. Anger was them not caring, just making what they wanted to make. And I certainly believe, that is their best album. They did what their hearts wanted to speak out. And it bloody worked. Without St. Anger, the band Metallica as we know today, would have long been gone.

Serj is ultimately right. the downfall of a lot of bands revolves around one guy being a control freak or greedy. Everyone should be allowed their own creative input otherwise there’s no point. Personally it seems that Daron is the one at fault. You can’t blame Serj for not wanting to write more songs with the band if he isn’t allowed to have some creative freedom.

Sam Lowden i agree with u that one guys greed makes a band fall apart however the rest of the band are all on the same side except serj. Serj used to write most of the lyrics and was THE voice of the band. It was his singing, not Daron's shrill whine, that people got into, and what made the band famous. @celticfury73286 жыл бұрын
Bands are NEVER equal...there is always one or two members who emerge as the main creative force, the visionary who produces the true voice of the band. There needs to be a singular unifying vision...without it, you wind up with a mishmash of disparate ideas that will never gel, and a band without an identity. When it comes down to who gets paid what in a band, it should be broken down like this: for live performances, all members pull equal pay, as they are all integral parts of the whole. Recorded performances, band members get paid in proportion to their creative input. Song writers, producers and engineers within the band get paid according to their contributions, with band members whose job is to learn parts that were written for them and play them on the recording are merely filling a role and not actually contributing much, so they get paid much less. Why should someone who contributes almost nothing be paid the same as someone whose creative energy, songwriting skill and hours of hard work define what the band is? I understand Serj wanting an equal voice in SOAD...he has emerged as a great songwriter in his own right and deserves to contribute. But the whole notion that everyone in the band should be paid equally for the efforts of the few? That's completely unfair to those who work much harder to make the band great!

Darren however (If Serj is being 100% honest) wants to be in creative control of the album and get paid more For being in creative control. It's like saying "I want us all to do things My way. Also since we're doing things My way, I should get paid the most because I am doing the most."
@ZombieRoca6 жыл бұрын
I_Am_Dragoon that’s the problem. Serj shouldn’t do half the vocals. He should do all the vocals and Daron be a background singer like he was in the first 3 albums. Serj is the lead singer. Why should the guitarist have half the vocals? That leaves Serj on stage standing when Daron is singing. At least Daron can shred his guitar while Serj is singing.
@MrSuperbeast926 жыл бұрын
@@ZombieRoca True, and I get that... But with them coming back together after both of them went and made careers on their own lyrics, then it would be understandable for them to do a 50/50 split. Serj leads the vocals on half, Darren makes his songs where he has the lead, and some songs where they co-write and split it. Because Darren has his own band, I wouldn't expect him to Completely give up the reins. I think it's a fair compromise... Darren however seems to have a bit too much ego for that though...

@ZombieRoca I agree with you 1000%. This is the exact same thing that happened with Alice in Chains, where Jerry Cantrell was pretty much in the same role as Daron -- he too decided he needed to be a 50% frontman, even though he was in a band with a ridiculously talented and unique singer. I agree the band works best when Daron is basically to SOAD what Flavor Flav is to Public Enemy: an ingredient that shakes things up for a moment, but not an equal frontman to Chuck D. Not sure if there's still tension, but I just saw System of a Down last week in San Diego, and they were still at the top of their game.

If these new details are accurate, and I have no reason to doubt them, then I support Serj's choice. I never thought I'd support a delay of another SOAD album. But I've been a fan from the first moment I heard Serj's voice over a loudspeaker in 2001 and I want to see them do it right. System is my all-time favorite group and they should do an album correctly or not do one at all. And let's be honest - Serj IS the band. His unique voice is what sets SOAD apart. And it's the reason I love them so much. Toxicity is still, in my opinion, the greatest album ever made. That's the type of spirit and mood they need to bring to the table if they're going to put out new music that will endure.

I must have been 10 when Mesmerise came out and at the time, even as a child, I thought it seemed as though Daron had taken over the band, just based on how much more he was singing in the songs and how different they sounded. I still feel that way today and hearing this makes me go with my gut instinct. Serj always seemed like a really good guy, Daron seems like an 18 year old musician who never grew up.

If they would go in the studio with all this shit in their head, it wouldn't work. Music is about chemistry among band members. I've been in a little band myself, and once this kind of tensions start, it's basically over. It is very difficult to recover from certain situations. They could find some sort of agreement and go back in the studio, but I'm not sure it would work properly. Sad.

Actually this isn't true. Disagreements and bad chemistry actually CAN lead to an amazing album, but they absolutely NEED to push themselves to finish it rather than give up when things dont go their way. Look at the album Saturday Night Wrist by Deftones. It was an amazing album by them but it nearly split the band up because of creative differences, but even though they disagreed on a lot of things with each other, and may not have particularly been happy with things in each song, the end result was one of their most unique albums that was widely praised. Those differences being smashed against each other can create things incredibly unique.

I thinks it’s pretty simple, Serj doesn’t like Mezmerize/Hypnotize and that’s the kind of music Daron is still making. Scars on Broadway always sounds like it could have been on those albums and that’s the type of stuff Serj doesn’t want a new system album to sound like and he knows Daron will get the final say and it will inevitably sound like that type of record. I love those and scars so I would totally be down with a new album like that as would most everyone I assume but for some reason Serj doesn’t like it so it won’t happen.

@lubomirkompis94416 жыл бұрын
It's more likely when you realize that SOADs music used to come from a place of deep emotion and anger with how things are. They are men changed by their success and the things they used to be angry about no longer affect them and no longer elicit such strong emotional responses. Their current state, their current struggles, their current sources of frustration and anger however might. If it's music the rest of us can identify with to the point of giving them a commercial success is somewhat questionable however. Still, I'd listen to the album, to understand them better, if nothing else.
To be honest I think Daron has a _huge_ ego. I'm not putting it all on him. But if Serj really doesn't wanna do more of the same, they should leave it be altogether. Because then it wouldn't be a real SOAD record after all. Just make a clear decision once and for all.

Whereas on System of a Down's previous albums most of the lyrics were written and sung by Tankian and the music was co-written by Tankian and Malakian (and sometimes Odadjian), much of the music and lyrics on Mezmerize/Hypnotize were written by Malakian who also took on a much more dominant role as vocalist on both ... Okay I'll point this out... None of this info is surprising with perhaps Serj actually responding to this, although he kind of had no choice and this has been building up for the last 12 years now... Anyone who was a fan of the band back when they were in their prime knew about Daron the Diva. Reason why Mesmerize and Hypnotize sounded so different from the first three albums and demo songs, as Daron wanted to sing more. Serj was never a metal guy. He was more focused on things like Poetry and fell into a metal band with his friends. That is why the original music was so unique creatively. Daron wrote the vast majority of the music and Serj provided lyrics and input on the earlier albums. When they went on Hiatus in 06, it was obvious Daron wanted to be more of a front-man and Serj wanted to explore other avenues and the other members of the band took advantage of that too. Years went by, an outburst by Shavo, and a couple of small statements from John and Daron. The band starting touring together however obviously as years went by and by again, and the direction Serj's solo music went, it was clear the interests no longer line up. As much as Serj is a self-righteous elitist libtard, I applaud his transparency here and believe his story as it falls in line with what is observed. I guess you can say it may not be anyone's fault as simply Serj and Daron do not see eye-to-eye on future of System, however it's worth pointing out how much of a drama-controlling brains-baked douchebag Daron is. Pretty shitty and petty to not shell out equal pay and respect other's input in a band of such long and tight membership, but hey do you honestly expect any less hypocrisy from a baked-out looney socialist? There's a reason why the other members aren't in Scars - they cost too much. Same reason why the videos are all about Daron. It's all about Daron the Diva. That said, is both Serj and Daron are extremely talented. Serj with his lyrical ability and Daron with songwriting. It looks like the new Scars album that was previously recorded is going to be really good. Its clearly better than Daron's first attempt, and sounds more like System. It sucks though that it didn't pan out to incorporate Serj's range in the songs to give them the icing on the cake that makes SOAD. What this means for System is that album they were gonna make last year has exploded and fell apart, here is about to be released Daron's ideas, and Serj has mentioned that he is taking his songs and might release another solo album with them. Very well could mean we won't ever get another SOAD album, however definitely means we will not get one in the next couple years as all the songs they had have just been dismantled and parted out.
@lenfantterrible34336 жыл бұрын
Also worth mentioned, John and Shavo are just along for the flow on this. They have made outbursts and comments over the years about Serj not going forward however it really is about Serj not conceding to King Daron. John and Shavo are cool with it because they have no choice. However Serj is a big name and can do just fine without System if Daron doesn't want to team play. Also FYI Serj and John's wives are sisters so yeah... lol the family treads lightly. How about those Thanksgivings!

It's bad for rock music especially. This doesn't happen as frequently with some of the newer types of music like rap music for example or EDM, like anything that can be done by one or two people vs. five. AND THEN the other cruel thing on top of that is bands also have to split the pay. You can see why it's so attractive for people to get into electronic music and stuff now, while the people in rock if things don't change are slowly going to die out and/or fade away.

When they released their 2005 albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize, I knew there were internal conflicts within the band just by the way the music sounded. I feel like Daron wanted the lead, and then wanted full creative control. To be completely honest, I preferred their original sound and really disliked the departure from in that I found in mez/hyp. you can see the lust for front man in, not only, Daron's eyes, but his entire demeanor; while Serj appears to be as he has always been, which is, about the music, and the message. Again, I feel Daron, not Serj, is responsible for the divide. he got his cake, now he has to eat it, at our expense.

Most people here are commenting in spite of one members who they believe is the problem. Regardless of Daron wanting to sing more or Serj not wanting to do the same thing continuously is completely down to them and people shouldn’t call them control freaks or whatever about it. There the guys who brought us the albums in the first place, so instead of getting annoyed about their inability to produce more, appreciate that they produced anything, and are trying to still produce more. I understand why some people call Daron a control freak but if he writes the majority of SOAD music and he has a vision for the band, who can blame him for wanting to take the band in that direction. As he said in an interview, as he writes most of the music, some songs need To be sang by him to get the right emotions across. And with serj, nobody can blame him for wanting to move on and do something else. It’s entirely up to him what he does and i Personally agree with his thoughts about doing the same thing over and over again, only I never looked at System that way as many of their songs are different from the rest. If he truly has moved on and it’s not in his heart to do System music, which I don’t believe is the case, then we should support him. I don’t know, nor do i care about who’s to blame for no album because I’m just glad that System existed at all. We don’t know what’s going on behind the interviews and what’s happened at their meetings so we shouldn’t assume anything about anyone. I wrote this comment purely to respond to all the people putting their anger on one member. Daron is my inspiration in most parts of life. A truly talented musician and Serj is too which is why it saddens me that people are giving them such hate Damn this was a long comment I appreciate and admire anyone who reads it all

Honestly I gave up on getting a new soad album years ago and I’m glad I did. In my opinion all of their albums (except for mesmerize which is still amazing) are perfect in their own ways. I honestly feel that if they kept going it just wouldn’t hit that point of quality that were all used to. I’m just grateful that we got so many amazing records from these guys.

"Fighting themselves instead of things that matter" Such as what? Another album? More touring? Nah, man. Honestly, I prefer to have the band stay where it is if they can't settle their differences. I never liked Hypnotize/Mesmerize for reasons I could not pinpoint but it always felt like the spark from the previous albums wasn't there. After hearing this, I'm glad to know I was right. They don't owe me anything, they don't owe us anything. They owe it to themselves to still enjoy doing what they do, and if that's not the case anymore then that's all there is to it, as the past decade and however long has proven. I don't care how long it takes for them to make something new (if they ever do) just as long as they are giving it their all. If they enjoy it, I'm sure we will as well.

Serj's solo work was good but really missing what the rest of the band provides. They are all such great musicians and to this day I listen to SOAD multiple times a week. I just went on a 13 hour road trip and listened to their whole discography. I understand their frustrations and respect the decisions made. The concert they did last summer that was filmed was a perfect way to kind of say goodbye to the band for me. I accepted the fact that I will never see them live again (05 Cbus was lit!!!), and probably never hear a new album.

gregory wald hell yeah! First song I ever heard was hypnotize and to this day it still remains my favorite among many others. I agree Serj didnt get to sing as much as he probobly would have liked but I also really enjoyed the heavyness of Darons songs
@e.devries52226 жыл бұрын
I love this band but I’m gonna stand with serj on this, I saw them and darron was far too high to even play the guitar. He started out facing the back of the stage and then eventually disappeared. Serj grabbed the guitar and sang and did darrons job. Darron eventually came back towards the end of the show. I think it says all.

The new (2018) scars on Broadway album is amazing! Serj is amazing in his own work now and clearly doesn't want to go the heavier route anymore. Respect to all is needed. Soad shouldn't be if the band isn't 100% behind it. Not all is lost by Soad not making new albums. I'd rather is scars and Serj do what they love than feel forced to make an album just for us.

This reminds me of a similar case of a small band... The lead singer, a guy called Axl wanted to take control of the band. It started with him making his band members sign some papers, giving him the rights of the name of the band. Then, the guitar player of that band, some guy called Slash recorded some of his songs and song ideas and showed them to the singer but the singer rejected them all, saying that those songs were too "redneck" and he wanted to sound more like...something like Nine Inch Nails. At the end, Axl, the singer was the only one who remained in the band. He hired a bunch of musicians to write songs with him and after almost a decade, he started touring again, under the same name (I think the name of the band was Guns n' Roses or something like that) and, as you can imagine, the fans were very disappointed when they realized that everyone but the singer had been replaced. Have you heard of that band, by the way? Not sure if people know about them... ;-) Let's hope that System Of A Down won't do the same mistake! However, if Serj isn't into that kind of music anymore, it wouldn't be fair to expect them to get together and to record an album, just because we liked what they've done before and we would like to get some more of that. People change but often, especially in music, the fans find out about a band, they love the songs and then they expect more of the same thing. Some bands like AC/DC are OK with keep doing the same kind of music but most of the bands, most of the people evolve and tend to go in different directions.

My opinion: (and before it gets destroyed in the comments remember it is just an opinion) Serj carried System of a Down. His vocal tone, his range, this talent. He has a voice that if it is featured on another band's song, you can recognize it's him immediately. Darren has a look that frightens people (which is part of SoaD's charm I know) but vocally he's not the greatest singer. His screech is a signature of SoaD but without Serj (Scars on Broadway) it's just terrible noise. Serj however with his solo career produced AMAZING music. There is no doubt in my mind that whenever I was genuinely blown away by anything SoaD did it was Serj's input/talent/performance not Darren's. Love ya Darren, I love to sing along those high notes with ya, but Serj is the face of the band for me.

I Kind of agree... Serj's vocals feel more varied and high quality. Also Serj puts more depth into his lyrics. Darren does an Awesome job as a guitarist, and while his vocals are memorable, they just don't have the same weight to them. It is Really evident in their separate careers. Serj's solo albums are full of deep lyrics and varied melodies, while Darren's are more of a trippy experience with an emphasis on the heavy sound. However they are Only SOAD when they put their sounds together. SOAD to me is the unique blend of heavy angrily yelled lyrics filled with justified outrage, solemn songs about how terrible and unjust our current society is, and nonsensical acid trips that can all coexist on a single album yet still work.

@lyannlovesadventure83626 жыл бұрын
Firstly I don't have any other social media to respond to Serj so I'll leave my comment right where it is. Secondly if you didn't get any answers from his response that's on you. In my OPINION Daron shitted all over Serj and Serj felt the need to reply. He wants to grow as an artist you can't blame an artist for wanting that. All the greats have done it. Go listen to radiohead and you get music from all over the spectrum and that's just one example. Need more examples Pink Floyd, Steven Wilson, Modest Mouse, Daft punk, the list goes on dude. I can understand being so devoted to a band and their sound. I totally get it. Look at slayer. They have had basically the same sound since the beginning and they are timeless but, not every group wants to do the same thing forever. The Foo Fighters are having this exact problem now. They've been doing the same thing for so long that although they have a dedicated fan base. The band itself is suffering ( more so David Grol) because some want to change their sound and some don't.
@lyannlovesadventure83626 жыл бұрын
alak58 I can see your perspective but even in the bands you named there have diversity in their sound not all Rammstein songs or albums for that matter sound alike. For example the Mutter album was one of their gothic sounds as opposed to other albums. I can see how as a die hard fan you don't want to change the winning formula but again we are not in their shoes. Serj wants more creative input I don't think that's hard to manage. SOAD has serious potential to take their music wherever they want, people adapt and will adapt to their change. It's life. People change, perspective, ideas, feelings, all the time. I can appreciate the stand the Serj is taking for his art. Also this is not belittling Darons work. I loved hypnotized and mesmerized. I even loved his solo work but, trying to control another artist to just conform and put out music they want IS NOT rock and roll.

Watching this in 2020 after they’ve released their two new songs makes a lot of sense with Daron basically taking over as lead singer and writing the songs. I really feel Daron needs to take a step back. Listening to Scars on Broadway I can hear the sort of System of a Down vibe in most of the stuff he writes. Where its lacking the most for me is in the lyrics. The lyrics aren’t as deep as they used to be, but kinda nonsensical and redundant at times. The first 3 albums where Serj had more of a hand in the writing came off more chaotic and poetic and I love the contrast of those two things. Daron needs to either take a backseat and contribute where he can as the lead guitarist and backing vocal or keep writing songs for system but compromise when a band mate has an issue with it. After all that’s what makes it a band not a solo project.
