The Difference Between Preaching and Teaching

What’s the difference between preaching and teaching?
I’ve also heard a pastor labeled as a good teacher, but not a great preacher. On the other hand, I’ve also heard others call a pastor a good teacher, but not a good preacher.
At the same time, today we will use the words teaching and preaching almost interchangeably when talking about what the pastor says on stage on a Sunday.
So what do we mean by preaching and teaching? Is there even a difference, and does it matter?
The short answer is yes. It does matter. It matters a lot. Please allow me to explain.

This was great! I am a young minister and have been called to Pastor but am not rushing to any pulpit lol. My goal and focus has been to increase in wisdom and understanding and your videos have been BEYOND Helpful! I pray that the Lord continues to bless you and increase your reach among his people!

@John Dixon Initially it was superficially based off of what the "Old Mother's" of the church would say and some other leaders who supported the church I was affiliated with. Then as I got Older, Studied more, Earnestly Engaged in Spiritual Gift Assessments (Multiple by the way) and prayer, I came away with a feeling greater than I could ever desire for myself to want to shepard God's people! I have tried to refute this numerous times and felt like God chose the wrong person BUT submitting to his will was a much better choice than doing things my way. My focus now has been preparing myself to teach and lead as an. faithful associate until the Lord calls me to plant or lead an additional campus to our church body. Hope this makes sense.

@John Dixon yeah absolutely hear you good brother I would encourage you to remain prayerful, and continue to seek Christ for firm Direction. I have learned that having the spiritual gift of shepherding does not always mean serving as a lead Pastor or hip-hop stir but an associate or even just somebody on the leadership team that can assist the pastor and shepherding the people! The biggest thing or rather than they and I focus on the most it's just always having a servant's heart. I feel like you can never go wrong with making that your focus as God continues to show you the direction that you need to go! I wish you well and everything that the Lord has in store for you and will be in prayer for you as you continue to walk this journey.

@kevinerose
@kevinerose 7 ай бұрын
@@ladydignity I feel like it is the other way around but I understand what you are saying. People today, as a whole, have very little understanding of the scriptures. It isn't by lack of teaching however. It is that preachers, teachers, and other church leaders are teaching mostly incorrect doctrine. If we had more and better preaching, those doing the teaching should be exhorted to teaching only doctrines of scripture rather than man-made doctrines (which is mostly what is taught today in church). Anyone who teaches within the walls of the church should constantly be exhorted to teach only scriptural doctrines. Anyone caught teaching man's doctrines should be reprimanded and corrected quickly. We need good preaching to keep the teachers in-line with doctrinal matters.

Great video and great information. I will say that some seem to be better at one than the other, hence Ephesians 4:11. all preaching should have some teaching and all teaching should have some preaching, but it really does seem that some are better preachers than teachers, and that some are better teachers than preachers. There are some that might be great at evangelistic meetings, but you really don’t want them doing too many Bible studies. There are some that seem to be good at Bible studies, but really could not preach their way out of a wet paper sack especially if you see preaching as exciting and exuberant. Some people just do not have the personality to preach in that way. Some seem to be equal in both preaching and teaching. That has been my observation and I’m not being dogmatic by any means I believe all ministers should be able to do some of both but there are some that you know where their strength is.❤

I just finished reading your Nuts and Bolts book I think there is a very big difference between Preach and Teaching. The Greek words are different and so are the concepts. However I agree the the two have much to learn from the other. The teacher needs to add a “So what!”, an application and a call to action. The preacher needs to do more than exhort, making clear the message of Christ. I’m terrified of Preaching but Comfortable with Teaching but after reading your book I see I have much to practice in any event. Blessings MikeInMinnesota

@@colina4699 The Word in general is aimed at transforming people whether thru encouragement (preaching/moving) or thru correction(teaching/info). The intention is that it goes thru the mind into the heart. Which is why God says I'll write my laws on their minds & hearts...Heb10:16 Eventually the aim is to transform the soul(mind+heart+will) Unless the minds and hearts are transformed, a person cannot wholeheartedly pursue after God's will😍
@colina4699
@colina4699 Жыл бұрын
@@Rhythmicflections I have no problem with the idea that hearts and minds need to be transformed. My issue is that you are unnecessarily dividing preaching as heart (emotions) and teaching as mind (knowledge). In the Jewish view, the heart encompassed the mind as well as the emotions. This video is good, because it links preaching to the proclamation of the gospel and teaching to simply explaining knowledge.
@Rhythmicflections
@Rhythmicflections Жыл бұрын
@@colina4699Which is what I also said. Preaching is proclaimation which encourages people to move from Pt A to Pt B. And that is inherently a touching of the heart. Why is it tough for the proud to receive Christ, because their hearts are proud. And it is difficult to receive grace for the proud whom God opposses. I am not saying they cant receive or be saved. We all have been proud or are proud in some measure. But they tend to be haughty in their hearts if thats the expression which I can say we repeatedly hear. Teaching is information and is processed in the mind predominantly. Its more of reasoning and understanding. Preaching is exhortation whereas teaching is information and correction. Btw: Language can be a barrier sometimes(like you said jewish view) since every language has a shortcoming in its expression. If we keep going to the root Hebrew or Greek everytime to understand the Spirit behind scripture, we will just become like the scholars of yesteryears who never won souls but just ended up debating & discussing too much. If the Jewish view was so in-depth, they would surely have understood Christ when He showed up before them rather than reject Him😀
@colina4699
@colina4699 Жыл бұрын
@@Rhythmicflections 1) The Jewish view in question is not the view of apostate Jews, but the prophets that the Lord spoke through. If you act as though the language they used was irrelevant, then you lead people to the very place where those "scholars of yesteryear ended up". 2) Language has deficiencies, hence why we need to be corrected by the original languages. 3) Nothing you have said here, negates the reality that both preaching and teaching deal with the heart. You are creating a needless dichotomy, where the standard of good preaching is not, do I understand God better, but is my heart moved, and the standard of good teaching is, did I learn something and did he leave my heart alone.

Preaching and teaching are both Apostolic gifts. Many preachers have a teaching anointing as well. Jesus was always teaching and he preached. It is not biblical to say that both teaching and preaching cannot be done at the same time. God can give many different spiritual gifts. You can certainly teach while preaching the Gospel.

I think this has caused such a huge problem in the world today. I would argue many "Preachers" from when I was younger did minimum teaching. The fail into a trap of assuming their proclamations, paired with their positions of authority, meant people would get it. I think we need to keep these words separate like God's word did and not combine them. I think a Pastor should both preach and teach but I don't think we should call it preaching. I think just calling it preaching without communicating the need for preaching leads to the generation of Christ Followers that we have now. A bunch of poorly discipled believers running around preaching at people. You aren't supposed to proclaim anything unless its true, and your life of sin and hypocrisy isn't a good proclamation. Your argument of Paul's implication supports that thought. My point is this, I think this is a bigger issue that leads to Christ-followers thinking they are meant to proclaim, be a preacher, when in fact they shouldn't. I think it why the enemy is able to convince people that our hypocrisy is something Christ can heal in us. In turn, making the lost not want this empty proclamation.

See, this is where people mess up at. As God calls you into the ministry, a preacher may be an evangelists. Or, they might be a pastor. The evangelists, basically goes to church to church preaching a revival, or visit a church for a day or two, preaching, giving the pastor a break, a rest. I've seen evangelists come and preach real good, and the people get all fired up, and the pastor is a little tickled 'cause what is being preached is what the pastor has been saying all along... If the man is a pastor, he may be gifted to be able to teach and preach. The pastor oversees the people God gave him. He feeds the flock of God as the Holy Ghost moves him. You cannot go to college for that. Now in the bible Timothy was Bishop of the city of Ephesus. Paul wrote 2 epistles to him. Well at lease those that are in the New Testament. Paul told him to feed the church that he was over. Paul to him to "do the work of an evangelist". And, Paul told him to "Preach the Word, be instant in season, out of season". If the pastor is really gifted, for all pastors are not evenly gifted. But to preach in their calling. No bible college can prepare you for the ministry. Who God calls he qualifies. Solomon said in Proverbs, Your gift will make room for you. A real good, efficient preacher is someone whose weathered the storm, whose been tested and tried by fire and the Holy Ghost. You don't show yourself faithful speaking Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. You get this by letting God speak to you. You get this by obeying your pastor. How you gonna preach and teach people if you can't follow leadership? Preaching is telling the gospel under the Holy Ghost. Teaching, you slow down, take your time and sometimes Q&A with people. Take a chapter or two and break down, what the pastor sees the people need.

Elisha was actually building a school of prophets. Nothing wrong at all with Bible college. I’m a Pentecostal pastor and understand what you are saying but at the same time, sometimes God will use others to help you grow in pastoring. I went to Bible college and now I’m pastoring. Most of my sermon prep comes from following the lead of the Holy Ghost of course. BUT Bible college taught me how to dissect the Bible. How to really study. How to get deep. It also taught me steps for marriage counseling, church growth etc. Trust me I do get what you are saying. I grew up in a old school type church where preaching was “don’t use notes. Just open your mouth and let the Holy Ghost loose”. Most of the time, that meant the eternal gospel and a million rabbit trails 😂.

The word you are looking for is Priest, not Preacher on Teacher as that is how the Hebrew people were taught in their temples.

When I talk, it's preaching. When my wife talks, it's teaching.

Education is definitely great... But when it comes down to being called to preach..... If you do not have ANOINTING from God, you don't have what ur supposed to have.. The anointing breaks the yolks.... Whether you believe in the holy ghost or whether you don't I would ask God 4 that gift... I don't have the holy ghost right now but I ask God for him..... But I do believe every word in that Bible...... I also seem demon possessed people when I was a child in a youth church camp.... that is the reason I know it's true.... Those demons are real and they are here today... I seen grown men run out of that church.... I was always maybe 11 years old....not one person said they're faking it... Maybe over 200 witnesses seen it... and trust me....the real from the fake is SEPARATED fast.......... In 2019 there are more hearers of the word and not doers

Hallelujah. I am a woman and have received the Holy Spirit. Everything changed when He came to stay with me. I did have to wait because He has a timing and He makes examples like Lazarus. Go with God

On stage? Are “pastors” meant to entertain his audience? FYI…the title “Pastor” is unbiblical & the role of Senior Pastor is also unbiblical.

This guy calls himself "pro preacher"? Sounds like he needs a lesson in humility

Sounds like you may need a lesson in judging people before you know anything about them. I don’t call myself “pro preacher.” It’s the name of my website where I’m working to help others preach better as I continue to learn too. But if you want to get technical, I do make my living as a preacher. So I am a professional preacher by definition.
