Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Seroquel (quetiapine) a second generation antipsychotic (SGA) that is FDA approved to treat anxiety, bipolar depression, bipolar mania and schizophrenia. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.
Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.

I am on 200mg for bipolar 2. For side effect, I have blocked nose. No worries..just use nasal spray. Best part of this med is that I sleep peacefully. I am less irritable, angry and more self aware. 3 years now. Better quality of life and self determination. My 2 cents worth.

You can but use nasal spray longer than a week, then you should stop or you’ll become addicted to its effects.

I am taking 150 mg extended release and here’s my deal. Sedated 24:7, very poor motivation, (zombie shuffle), increase appetite, weight gain. The sedating effects has little wear off through our day. Improved my mental health issue Basically killed my motivation to do fun stuff. Barely if ever play music or do hobbies anymore It’s like I have a why bother attitude for anything other than work or grandkids. Barely walk the dogs, it’s not a fun life but it’s calm

I have a friend with bipolar disorder who was recently taken off of lithium after that had worked for years. They did this because of a heart issue that developed. His anxiety level skyrocketed. He was put on Seroquel and propolanolil and Ativan. The Dr. stopped his Ativan and is now allowing him extra Seroquel mid day to quel his anxiety. But he's taking more than suggested to stop the anxiety. He's now taking 50mil at night and 25mil mid day. Is this too much? Wiki has no dose info. He can't ride out the anxiety. Should he be put on a Benzo for anxiety? We know it's addictive. But he's 70 years old. Perhaps it would be ok to manage a Benzo carefully. I'm afraid of this keeps up he will kill himself.

@@TreCayUltimateLife my doctor recommended for me to take seroquel at bedtime with my sleep med because that would also make me feel “sleepy” and “drowsy”… well i took it at night. I was walking in my kitchen when suddenly i start to see patterns. I knew they werent real but i didnt know what was happening. I went outside and sae the same patterns on the floor, i looked up and saw bugs crawling. I knew everything wasnt real but it was shocking and scary. I didnt know what to do and was thinking why would this happen… i didnt want to call 911. I then forced myself to throw up in the bathroom. I took a joint from that i had purchased from the smoke shop to calm me down. I was smoking it and called a friend and told him to stay on the phone with me and if i stopped talking to call 911. It took some time to wear off but it made me so scared. When walking i kept looking forward because i didnt want to even see more from the sides. I was extrnely terrified and in shock. I will never touch seroquel.

Hopefully this doctor sees my question. I take 50 mg xr for sleep. I wanna xome off of it been on it for 4 years. Why cant u cut the seroquel xr in half. I get that it has a coatimg for extwnded release but if you cut it iant it like being on the immwdiate release version? Ive tried the immediate release veraion and i enedes up having a panic attack. Od rather cut the xr. My psychiatrist has told me just to stop the 50 mg because its the lowest dose. But I want to wean. And id rather cut the xr version. Why is it dangerous if i just want to wean. I feel tired the next day from the xr even though its only 50 mg. She also said she doeant know if you can cut it and if a pharmacist said I could then go for it. But what am I in fo rif i cut seroquel xr 50 mg. Anything. ? I dont care if it turns into immediate release. Its a pill I know and would rather do that then take the actual immediate release because of my experience in tje past with IR.

12 days ago I reduced the quetiapine dose from 100 to 75 mg., 3 x 25mg per day I couldn't sleep for 6 days and had constant anxiety. Now every time I take the medication I start to feel anxious, restless and agitated after an hour. When the medication reaches its half-life after 5 to 6 hours, I become calm again. How can it be that This is logically part of the withdrawal symptoms!? Shouldn't the symptoms be the other way around.!?

I take 300mg once a day at night and it has absolutely been a life saver. I have bipolar 1 and pretty bad anxiety so sleep is very elusive to me, and seroquel not only has treated my insomnia and let me get a good 8+ hours of sleep, it helps regulate my bipolar. I don’t have very many episodes of mania or severe depression but maybe 2 times a year. The ONLY side effect I’ve had is that is affects my ability to regulate body temperature so I can become overheated very easily and feel like I’m going to faint if I overdo it physically. Taking all that into consideration the benefits that I receive from the medication absolutely outweighs the one side effect I have. I have also tried rexulti and Abilify but had terrible weight gain and cravings. So seroquel has been a game changer for me that treats SO many symptoms I was experiencing. 10/10 would recommend for anyone with bipolar 1, moderate to severe anxiety, and insomnia.

This drug almost killed my 86 (at the time of event) year old mother. It affected her heart critically. She ended up having the equivalent of a heart attack. She was standing in the living room blacked out because her heart malfunctioned and from a standing position fell over full force and hit the floor with her head so hard the whole side of her head was blue for a month (blue bruise started next day). I picked her up put her on the couch let her sit for 5 minutes and thought she ok. I told her to come into the kitchen and have breakfast I prepared for her. She came into the kitchen sat down and almost fell over again while sitting. I had to grab her to steady her. That’s when I called 911. Do your research online for this drug you’ll find it is “cardio toxic” and the death rate due to random cardio events is high.

Seroquel (quetiapine) similar to all neuroleptics, potentially could cause tardive dyskinesia (although it likely has a much lower risk than most first generation (and many second generation) neuroleptics. It tends to be well tolerated, but it can potentially cause several of the side effects that you mention (such as increased glucose and higher risk of diabetes, constipation, and changes in lipids). Many of these side effects can be easily monitored with labs. If someone is concerned about possible side effects, I recommend speaking directly with their (or your husband's) provider to discuss risks and benefits of trialing the medication. Thank you for your question! - Dr. Pagnani

I started lactating and lost my period and was incredibly itchy. It turned out that the tiny dose I took for sleep gave me a pituitary gland tumour that gave me menopause at 30, the endocrinologist said I had the hormones of an 80 year old. I had to take Dostinex to shrink the tumour and spent every weekend in bed throwing up from it. The first time I took seroquel I fainted in the shower, I was 22 and I phoned the doctor saying I don’t want to take this stuff. She told me I had to so I did what she said. She also put me on Effexor 150 and that eventually gave me seizures. Then Lexapro and that gave me seizures too. I now take a tiny dose of CBD and feel great and I sleep

Dr wants me on 25mg as a Mood Stabilizer and Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Attacks. Last time I took it years ago was on a higher dose I think? That was back in 2011. He wants me on it for social anxiety, panic attacks and mood disorder. All it did was made me feel like a zombie. Didn't mess with my Mania at all. Just zombie mode and tired. How often does the zombie effect wear off? I took it during the day so he wants me to take it at night this time. I heard good reviews for anxiety disorders and it was given a 7.4 star rating. Hopefully it'll help my GAD, PTSD, Social Anxiety, etc. I have a hard time sleeping at night. Had a bad experience with Celexa. :( I hope this works better. All Dr told me it would make me tired and hungry. Sick of these panic attacks. I want to feel normal again. Anyone had any success with panic attacks??? Taking it tonight. Wish me luck. 🙏
