The Pufferfish Tank Is Ruined (Can I Fix It?)

In this week I address what is most likely my ugliest aquarium to date! I've been maintaining it as usual, but the algae grows back in just a few days. After a few months, it gradually ended up looking like this. Since I made the adjustments things are looking up. Other than the algae on the hardscape it's been staying pretty clean.
What would you do? Would you try to dial in the tank or start a new one and transfer the fish? Let me know in the comments!

For the puffers - do low light for 12 hours. That will help with the algae. Also, you can feed live scuds to the puffers (scuds will eat the decaying plants and algae while the puffers keep their numbers in check). Don't rescape/tear down and imbalance the tank. H2O changes and other items I mentioned and you are good to go.
@cattfishing
@cattfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. I actually had a big clump of pilia moss that got covered in some stringy algae. I put the whole chunk in my snail/scud tank. They are getting it cleaned pretty fast. I can actually see the moss again within just a few hrs. I did this with some moss that had some black algae growing and when it's all eaten up, I put it back in the tank and my pea puffers love hunting the scuds and snails that were stuck in the clump of mosses.

@@AcrylDame yeah I think phosphates are a big issue for me. I’m also fairly certain the culprit is trying to do a dirted tank. Both of these tanks have a soil layer under the sand where as my others are just sand or bare bottom. I think I should have done a lot more research before doing a tank like that, I probably did it wrong. So for me I guess starting over would be smart but it’s just too much of a project to redo the 60g right now. I’m planning on taking down the 5g though
@AcrylDame

@@ohrats731 In a heavily planted tank phosphate can easily go to zero, even If heavily stocked. Measuring nutrients is annoying but it really helps you understand whats going on. Because you don't know whats going on, redoing the tank would probably be a mistake.

I used to have problems with algae in my puffer tank too, and I mostly put it down to them eating snails. Snails are rather good at keeping algae at bay, after all, but the puffers gobbles them up. I had luck with big amano-shrimp, though, and they took care of the algae (and probably left over food too) very quickly. Puffers CAN eat shrimp, though, so I was a bit hesitant to try, but in my case it was very much worth it.

First, I ADORE the pond! Truthfully, for the puffer tank, I'd start over - in my experience, sometimes when you have debris like anacharis leaves and hornwort needles constantly shedding it can just become totally overwhelming no matter how many water changes you do. For pea puffers, something with nice broad leaves that bloodworms will rest on like a plate for easy picking (good ole anubias...) might help them find the food rather than letting quite so much sink to the substrate. I'm not sure how you feel about bare bottom tanks, but that helped avoid mess with my goldfish and axolotls because they were horribly messy eaters as well, and I could see waste to vacuum it up immediately. All that to say, sometimes you have to start over to avoid that exhausting water-change burnout... gotta do what you gotta do! Always love your videos, thank you for the update!

I mean, if I was going to restart a tank, I would have done it when it turned into the green pond. But it looks like you’ve gotten some control over it since then with more plants, shorter photo period, etc. If it was my tank, I’d probably just fight the algae. I had the same problem in some of my tanks, but added some floating plants like water lettuce, salvinia, and even the dreaded duckweed, and now my 55gal is pretty much algae free. The trumpet snail hitchhiker helped, too, but snails won’t help the pea puffers in a janitorial capacity, lol. Can’t wait to see what’s to come. I’m always excited when you upload a video.

Balance that tank out. It's a really good scape, the rock at the bottom right commands attention, which is then drawn up to the top of the driftwood where your gaze starts to flow left along the wood to the end of the tank where you're left thinking "woah, that's pretty cool". It even looked cool when it was an algae filled mess! The key here is the lighting and the scape work too well together to scrap it. This should be preserved.

I am jealous of this set up... maybe one day I’ll have my own place and can do cool stuff like this to relax in. I think trying to balance the puffer fish tank is the right choice. As you said, the way the fish eat is a major contributing factor for why the algae was taking over. It would be a shame for you to set a new tank up then go through this again! Just finding the balance to maintain the tank is what is important. Side note, it’s great that your wife enjoys the babies as much as you do! Is she camera shy? You need some bottom dwellers, to help clean up the leftover food, like Kuhli Loaches. They can live with pea puffers, and would get a nice spray of orange in the tank. Some Otocinclus would also help with the algae. Extra residents will bring extra bio-load, but they do their part to help knock back the excesses causing problems in the water column. The fast growing plants are a good thing, but the additional fish will help the plants do their job.

I'd put the puffers in a temp tank, empty and scrub down your existing scape, then new plants, algae eaters, shrimp etc in there as a clean up crew, get it established for a couple weeks, put the puffers back in. But seriously - what's with the teaser at the end?! What's going in there?! Green tree python? A MONITOR?!?!?! You big tease :) Big love from Scotland.

Yo Serpa Squad representing! I’ve just subscribed somehow but I’ve watched loads of your videos cause when KZbin suggests them to me I can’t help but click on them. I have 4 tanks set up right now but none of them are on your level. I love the idea of a living habitat that helps to clean itself. I have some ringtails in my tanks and want to order isopods soon. If I have a question for you it’s this: Do you have any experience with Axolotls?

I think you should keep the tank for sure! You did a great job scaping it and I think you should stay resilient when these acclimation issues arise. I am quite the aquarium noob, but could you introduce another fish (or even a big enough species of freshwater shrimp?) that primarily feeds on the algae?

The reptile room is looking phenomenal! I’d say you keep the puffer fish tank as is kinda experiment with it, take notes on what work and what didn’t regarding the puffer’s eating behavior and then do a long term tank with all those little details sorted.

Sick cork bark flip!!! Honesstttlllyyy... if you can find time to squeeze it in, maybe the puffer tank needs a make over. My newt who eats bloodworms has this issue so I took out most of the plants, it's fine now? idk. frozen food is a mess, I swear.

I think putting the fish into a holding tank until this one can get established. I wonder if there are any detris feeders you can include with the puffers without upsetting them.

I think I’d build another tank to get it established but while doing that I’d try and dial in the current puffer tank. If you get it working the way you want then you have another established setup to put something else in, if it doesn’t work then you have a tank ready to go for the puffers.

Hey tanner try putting in a bunch of floater plants to soak up the extra nutrients. Maybe a supplementary filter with carbon?

i would try to balance the current tank, less stress on the fish and you can keep the current scape. If that doesnt work after a few months, you can always start over

I have a strongly blooming hedgerow which serves as my fish cemetery. And I use my wast water to feed things like my Meyer lemon tree. Instant compost tea, and it came out of a planted tank, so also some micros in there.

Love your videos! I made my own terrarium desk because I loved your video on that so much! I was curious does your glass get covered in condensation every day? I get a lot of condensation to the point of fully blocking the view. I'm wondering if I have too much sphagnum moss keeping too much moister in there. Are the small holes on top to let condensation escape? Also I put spring tails in but I don't think they are doing the work I expected and am wondering if they escaped or died, can you give any info on them? This is my first terrarium, so all new to me. Thanks for the help! keep up the great content! Your house is a dream home!

For the puffer fish tank... I would keep the setup you have and try to fix it. If it were me, I'd let the puffer fish be the main draw, but add a few things, like algae eaters, maybe some snails, and increase the shrimp population to handle the build up of waste that isn't being broken down. I'd then give it another month or two, to see if that regulates it a bit. And definitely get that timer fixed!

I would try and save the tank but I also would like to see you do another build so I'm in limbo, but I'm super pumped to see that scape at the end with the cork bark tree i need something like that for my iguana. Good work👍
